It is recognised as a hallmark of quality, and signifies that the holder has the necessary training and understanding to teach effectively. This demanding course equips potential teachers to begin a successful career in the ELT industry. Minimum level: Advanced (C1). All applicants will be interviewed to ensure suitability for the course. Minimum age: 20 Maximum class size: 12 Total number of hours: 200 (130 timetabled; 70 non-timetabled) Course duration: 4 weeks Course dates for 2020: 3 rd – 28 th February; 1 st – 26 th June; 12 th October – 6 th November Course details On the course you will receive instruction from experienced trainers in the practice of English language teaching, and an introduction to the theories behind it. This will cover many areas, including grammatical structures and vocabulary, as well as discourse analysis and language variation. You will consider the problems faced by language learners; as part of this you will follow a short course in an unknown language, where you will experience as a learner the techniques covered in the course. You will observe experienced teachers delivering lessons, and be invited to reflect on what you see. An essential part of the course is observed teaching practice: you will teach classes at two different levels for a total of six hours, receiving guidance before you teach, and feedback after your lessons. The course consists of five overlapping modules: Teaching Skills This includes methodologies, materials selection, lesson planning, and reflection. Language awareness and skills Here you will examine phonology, lexis, syntax, function, and meaning. Learner Profile Here you will interview and assess a language learner, teach a 1:1 lesson with the learner, and draw up a plan for further study. Materials assignment This is the evaluation and production of materials to be used in the classroom. Unknown language You will write a report on your unknown language course, and show how you have integrated your observations into your own practice.
