Certificate in Renewable Heating Systems

This new one-year part-time Certificate in Renewable Heating Systems (Level 6) is aimed at unemployed qualified plumbers. It will offer them the opportunity to add to their skills set to enable them to get employment in the renewable heating sector. Key drivers for skills in the renewable heating sub-sector are for the installation, servicing and maintenance of such equipment, in particular for solar, biomass and heat pumps.

The aim of the course is to enhance and develop new skills, to provide a sound understanding of the technology and techniques employed in a variety of alternative renewable energy sources in private homes and industry, e.g. renewable energy heating systems, geothermal heat pump systems, solar collection and water heating systems, heat recovery ventilation systems.

Minimum Entry RequirementsNational Craft Certificate in Plumbing

ModulesSolar Water Heating, Biomass Heating Systems, Heat Pumps, Instrumentation, Introduction to Engineering Science and Calculations, Entrepreneurship, Learning to Learn, Integrated Project.

ProgressionStudents who successfully complete this programme will possess the necessary theoretical underpinning to enable progression to the existing Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering and Renewable Energy at AIT.

Career OpportunitiesIt is expected that graduates from this course will find employment in the renewable heating sector. Specifically, opportunities exist in the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of renewable heating equipment. Graduates may also be employed in integrating renewable and non-renewable heating options and installations or as technical representatives for suppliers in the renewable heating sector. Alternatively, graduates may become self-employed in the renewable heating sector.
