What is the Certificate of
Multilingual Proficiency?
The Indiana Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency is an award made
by a participating school corporation, charter school or accredited
nonpublic high school designating on a student’s transcript that the
student has attained a high level of proficiency, sufficient for
meaningful use in college and a career, in one or more languages
in addition to English.
See full description in Indiana Code here.
Why should my school/district
implement this?
The Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency is a formal
validation of an Intermediate High level of
proficiency that benefits both world language and
English Learner students.
This will serve students entering the workforce as a
confirmation of their linguistic skillset.
For university-bound students, the Certificate will be
noted on a student’s transcript. IDOE is still working
with universities to determine if this can be utilized to
grant credit to students as the assessments are
external and not locally-created.
