Acknowledgement This Compressed Earth Blocks training standards and teaching curriculum document is funded by the International Trade Center (ITC) project through the Youth Empowerment Project in The Gambia. The National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA) led the development of the said through an eight-day workshop held at NAQAA’s Conference Hall. The development team consists of members from Earth Builders Association (EBA), private sector and NAQAA. Specifically, the team expressed gratitude to the Chief Executive Officer, NAQAA, for his technical inputs during the workshops on the development of same. PROGRAMME INFORMATION 1. Programme Title/Course of Study: Compressed Earth Blocks Making and Construction

2. Level of the programme/Course of Study: Certificate (GSQF Level 1)

3. Occupation Level: Compressed Earth Blocks Technician

4. Programme Description:

This programme is intended to prepare trainees with the required knowledge and skills to serve as technicians in Compressed

Earth Block (CEBs) works. It includes topics on Compressed Earth Block history, resource/material requirements for CEB

production, laying and levelling of CEB walls as well as masonry works with CEBs.

5. Programme Aims

The programme goals are:

1. To produce competent technicians on compressed earth blocks masonry works.

2. To prepare trainees be able to produce quality compressed earth blocks

3. To prepare trainees on laying and levelling compressed earth blocks walls

4. To reduce the unemployment rate among young people and women

5. To promote the use of CEBs in the construction sector

6. Programme Learning Outcomes

A. Occupational Competencies:

Upon successful completion, graduates should be able to:

• Explain basic concepts relating to Compressed Earth Blocks (CEB)

• Determine the resources/materials required for the production of CEB

• Demonstrate knowledge of CEB Production

• Use block laying techniques for the laying and levelling of CEB walls

• Use different bond patterns as needed [during] when constructing with CEB construction using CEB

7. Admission requirements

1. Candidates should have at least basic reading and writing skills in English and Numeracy (skills,) or have completed

at least 9 years of schooling and have previous experience in block / brick laying; or

2. Trainees/Individuals who have no formal educational background but have previous industry exposure and

experience in block / brick laying. (Mature students) may apply and take an entry test / assessment to enter the

programme with Recognition of Prior Learning.

. 8. Total qualification time of the programme (Programme Duration)

The total qualification time for this programme is a minimum of 54 weeks with an approximate guided teaching and

learning time of 20 hours per week.

Scope/Range/Accountability:

Blockyard organisation: preparation of a site for temporary block production, layout of block yard for placement of materials,

manipulation of soil and machine operation.

Block press assembly/maintenance: (Machine used can have single or multiple moulds) highlight general operating parts

(mould placement, plates, lever, closing/opening lid, hopper, etc.); grease points, maintenance concerns, typical daily

maintenance needs, machine cleaning, associated machine tools and equipment, manpower requirements for effective block

production - depending on machine used.

Soil Identification and Testing: general soil components, how to test a particular soil to determine the ratio of different

components (field / laboratory tests), preferred ratio of soil components (sand, silt, gravel and clay) depending on stabilization

agent, correcting soil composition.

Soil Preparation: sieving the soil to remove particles over the required size

Soil Measuring and Mixing: depending on the need for stabilization and existing ratio of components in soil, determine

amount of sand (or other components) needed to correct soil, as well as amount of stabilizer needed (as a percentage of the

total mixture) depending on block function; method of mixing soil and additives to obtain a homogenous mixture (dry and wet

mixes)

Block production using a block press: testing moisture content of mix to produce a good block, operating the block press

to obtain the type and size of block needed, block handling after production to prevent damage.

Block stacking: how to properly stack blocks depending on the time (days) after production to prevent damage and prepare

for curing.

• Soil identification (components: sand, silt, clay, gravel)

• Types of test [field test (jar, biscuit, pencil, etc.) and laboratory test]

• Soil testing (test for compressibility, texture, cohesion, plasticity)

• Stabilizers (cement, lime etc.)

Specific Learning Outcome 1: Upon successful completion, trainees should be able to organise a block yard for CEB production.

Content Guidelines:

• Organisation of block yard for CEB production (determine placement of block press machine, mixing area, stacking area and curing area)

• Types of platforms for block press machine (class 15 concrete or wooden plank etc)

• Construction of a level platform for block press machine

• Class 15 concrete platform for mixing, staking and curing areas

• Erection of temporal sheds for operational (location of machine and mixing) and stacking areas

• Health and safety considerations (Personal protective equipment, clear the blockyard from hazardous materials) Specific learning objectives: Trainees should be able to:

1. Position the block press machine appropriately 2. Select convenient mixing, stacking and curing area for smooth production 3. Determine a suitable platform for the block press machine 4. Construct a class 15 concrete platform for the mixing and stacking area 5. Erect temporal sheds for the production of CEB 6. • Operate block press machine to produce different types of blocks

• Perform initial and final stacking of different blocks for curing

• Adhere to health and safety considerations (Personal protective equipment, manufacture’s safety instructions)

• Checking the block height (all four corners should match)

• Determine the wet compressive strength of the block (using the penetrometer, standing on the block etc)

• Lab test (dry compressive strength)

• Examine the appearance of the block (examine the block faces and edges for defects) Specific learning objectives: Trainees should be able to:

1. determine block height 2. Check wet compressive strength of a CE block 3. Have knowledge of laboratory test for dry compressive strength test 4. Check the appearance of the block for defects

General Learning Outcome: Upon successful completion, trainees should be able to lay and level CEB to construct walls while adhering to relevant safety procedures.

Specific Learning Outcome 1: Upon successful completion, trainees should be able to identify the necessary tools and equipment for laying and levelling CEB walls.

Content Guideline:

• Tangible tools and equipment (trowels, building line, water level, sprit level, plumb line, builders’ square, large squares, folding rule, measuring tape, pointer, scaffold, mallet, rendering tools, block saw, etc)

Assessment Criteria for each outcome

1. Out of 100 marks, 75 marks must be allocated to practical assessments and 25 marks to be allocated to oral/written assessments. In order for a candidate to be declared competent 65 marks out of the 75 marks must obtained in the practical assessment/examination, and 10 marks must be obtained out of the 25 marks on the oral/written assessment/examinations.

2. Alternatively, if the institution running is not a licensed training institution, NAQAA will do the Assessment and

Certification, and in that case, the Gambia Skills Qualification Framework conditions apply.
