The God Particle

‘God Particle’ is making headlines around the world, especially in scientificcircles. Scientists are taking a sigh of relief after discovering the triggeringagent of the big bang. Even big bang is a lame scientific acceptance of thesudden appearance of the universe. Even as the theory of evolution of lifeand universe became a bottomless one, scientists had to come up with thebig bang to explain the sudden appearance of the universe. What triggeredthe big bang remained a mystery. The answer to that is the discovery of theHiggins-Bosson particle or what is sarcastically called ‘god particle’.

In simple terms it is similar to the spark in an internal combustion engine. The cylinder and other engine parts are there in perfect order for the spark tostart the combustion of the fuel. The god particle is acting like the spark forthe big-bang. This may be a too simplistic comparison, but it can give apicture.

But God is not a particle or mere energy or force. It is quite possible todiscover a process, however it is complicated. That does not mean there isnothing beyond it. God who is absolutely invisible created the universe withHis word. From that point on the results are knowable through simple orvery complex methods. That in no way rules out a personal Creator God. Ifthe collider experiment exactly duplicated big bang, at least a mini-universeshould have been created. But where is that? Is it still under the Alps?

Scientific inquiries and discoveries are great and they should continue. But challenging God through them is futile. Paul writes in Romans,“Professing to be wise they become fools” (Rom: 1:22) Collider experimentor something ten times more complex than that would not touch the divineGodhead forever.

Spiritual food from Micah

Israel’s sins brought about a worshipping of other gods. Micahsought to get Israel to see that there was none like God, who

could pardon their iniquity and delight in His mercy (7:18). Allother god’s fail. There is none like our great God and Saviour. The devil gets us in a ditch and leaves us there, but God neverleaves us nor forsakes us. Though an enemy should encampagainst us and seek to destroy us, we can have confidence thatGod is our refuge, that in the secret of His tabernacle He shallhide us (Ps. 27:1-5).

God is our Refuge and Strength (Ps. 46:1)

The present evil world is a wilderness. Here we are exposed tostorms and tempests, to dangers and foes. If left to provide forourselves, we must perish, and our enemies would triumph overus. But the Lord has condescended to become the refuge of Hispeople. To Him we may repair and find safety, receive supplies, and enjoy repose. If He defends us, no one can injure us. If He isour refuge, nothing can overcome us. Every Christian can say,“The Lord is my refuge”. Beloved, let us keep this in view thatwhatever tempests we may have to pass through, whatever foesmay assail us, the Lord will protect and defend us. From thewrath of man, from the rage of hell, from the storms of time, Hewill shelter and screen us. He will not only receive and protectus, but He will strengthen us with His strength, when we areweak, If God is our refuge, we are safe. If God is our strength,we overcome the world. Let us therefore fly to him and trust inHis Word.

There is none likeour great God and Saviour

Divine Light andHuman Flares

Dr. Paulson Pulikottil

Isaiah 50:10-11 gives two options for those who want guidance. One is todepend on the leading of the Lord even though it is darkness around. The

other is to light up one’s own flares and find the way through. “Who amongyou fears the LORD and obeys the word of his servant?

Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of theLORD and rely on his God. But now, all you who light fires and provideyourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of thetorches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand:You will lie down in torment.”

Flares don’t last long and they light up only the surroundings. Since itlights up the darkness for a while and then dies out, those who venture intodarkness with them may find themselves deep in darkness when the fuel ofthe flare is gone. Such people may end up groping in darkness.

The other option for those who are in darkness is to trust in the Lord.Trying to walk in our own light is another word for self- reliance, whichrejects the role of God in our life. This invites trouble. However, venturinginto the darkness knowing God is out there is faith which honours God.

Nothing illustrates this aspect better than a poem by Minnie LouiseHarkins (1875-1957), which my friend sent to me recently. I said to the manwho stood at the gate of the year,

‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown. ‘And he replied,‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shallbe to you better than light and safer than a known way!’ So I went forth andfinding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And he led me towardsthe hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

Heaven belongs toWhom!

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life throughJesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23)

“For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it isthe gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8)

What Most People ThinkThere may be as many opinions on who goes to

heaven as there are people. Here are a few of themost popular ones:

Everyone becomes an angel and goes to heavenwhen they die.

Whoever obeys the Ten Commandments will goto heaven.

Whoever goes to church will go to heaven.Whoever does more good things than bad things

will go to heaven?Whoever believes in God will go to heaven.Whoever has not killed anyone or done anything

really bad will go to heaven. Everyone in a Christian household will go to

heaven. These opinions may seem OK, but they are all

wrong.“If none of these are correct, who to heaven?”

you may ask. The answer is simple. The people whogo to heaven are the ones who “get right with God”by beginning a relationship with Him throughHis Son Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, under-standing how to “get right with God” became unclearas organized religion developed over the centuries.Although “religious people” have been telling othershow to go to heaven for a long time, what they saycan be distorted by their opinions. That is why it isvital to go back to the unchanging foundation—theBible. For example, the apostle Paul refuted the falseteachings of his day and told everyone how to “getright with God” using the first century version of

the Internet—a letter. This letter is recorded in theBible as the book of Galatians

What Do You Mean I Can’t Get To HeavenMy Way?- Everyone becomes an angel and goesto heaven when they die. This opinion is wrongfor at least three reasons:

· Not all angels end up in heaven.· People and angels are different.· The Bible never states that people turn into

angels. Note: Certain angels that sinned have alreadybeen cast into hell. Read 2 Peter-2:4 to see that. Beingan angel is no guarantee of getting into heaven.Although the Bible describes some angels as havingthe appearance of “men” or having “human form,”the text makes it obvious that angels are not people.Further, no word in the Bible says that one memberof creation changes into another. This is true foranimals, people . . . and angels too. Nothing increation changes from what it starts out to be. Youprobably make a pretty good human, and God willkeep you that way.

Whoever obeys the Ten Commandments willgo to heaven. This opinion is wrong for at least threereasons:

· The Bible never states that obeying the TenCommandments will get you into heaven.

· The Ten Commandments are about 0.06%of the Bible (Exodus 20:3-17, later repeated inDeuteronomy 5 -7:21). If that was all people neededto know, the other 99.94% of the Bible would nothave been written.

· Even the best people can not keep the Ten

Commandments. Although we have met a numberof people who think they have always obeyed theTen Commandments, a few questions typically revealthat they have broken most of them hundreds of timeseach. For example, most people broke thecommandment “honor your father and your mother”at least once. People then realize that by the timethey finished their teenage years, they broke thatCommandment hundreds of times more. If yourparents are still living andyou ever criticize anything about them, youare still breaking that commandment. We couldcontinue with examples from the othercommandments, but the point has been made. Peoplewho examine themselves truthfully discover theyhave broken most of the Ten Commandments atsome time in their lives—and if you break one once, you are lost.

Whoever goes to church will go to heaven. Thisopinion is wrong for at least three reasons.

· The Bible never states that attending churchwill get you into heaven.

· Since churches disagree with one another, how do you know you are in the correct one to getyou into heaven?

· If going to a restaurant does not turn youinto a hamburger, why do you think going to a churchwill turn you into a saint? We have seen peoplewho go to church each week and promptly fall asleep. If they are openly bored with God, will He still invitethem into heaven anyway? We do not think so. Whatif the church they are attending is actually a cult or afalse religion? If that is the case, they are in trouble.Don’t get us wrong—an important part of this site isdedicated to helping people find a good church. Still, going to church will not get you into heaven.

Whoever does more good things than badthings will go to heaven? This is also called“balance scale” judgment, and is one of the mostcommon wrong beliefs. This opinion is wrong forat least three reasons:

· The Bible never states that doing more goodthings than bad things will get you into heaven.

· God is so holy (perfect and sinless) that “allour righteousness’s are like filthy rags” to Him(Isaiah 64:6). Do you think giving God a pile of filthyrags will cause Him to bring you into heaven? Wedon’t.

· Going to heaven (or “being saved”) is a freegift of God. He made it that way so nobody couldboast that they made it to heaven by their own gooddeeds. (Ephesians 2:8 and 9.)

Whoever believes in God will go to heaven. This opinion is wrong for at least three reasons:

· The Bible never states that believing in Godwill get you into heaven, and confirms that such isthe case in James 2:19.

· Satan (the Devil) believes God exists. Infact, he talks with God in Job 1& 2. Yet, heis not going to heaven—he is going to be cast intothe lake of fire and brimstone (hell). This is recordedin Revelation 20:10.

· Angels that sinned were cast into hell—andthey knew God. 2 Peter:2&4. Sorry, believing in Godis not enough to allow you to enter heaven.

Whoever has not killed anyone or doneanything “really bad” will go to heaven. Thisopinion is wrong for at least three reasons:

· Although murdering someone is one of thebest ways to help you go to hell, the Bible neverstates that not murdering anyone will get you intoheaven. The same is true of not doing ”lesser”crimes.

· In the Bible, there are at least two murderersthat went to heaven: Moses and David.

· There are some people who never killedanyone (or did anything else “really bad”) who stillwent to hell (hades). Read an example in Lukechapter 16, verses 19 to 31.

Everyone in a Christian household will go toheaven. This opinion is wrong for at least threereasons:

· The Bible never states that being part of aspecific family will allow you to go to heaven.

· You are not physically born a Christian likeyou are born a citizen of a country. To become aChristian and go to heaven (enter the kingdom ofGod) you have to be “born of water and the Spirit.”This is different. See John chapter 3, verses 1-8.

· The Bible states that some members of afamily will go to heaven while others sleeping orworking next to them will not (Matthew 24:40, 41and Luke-17: 34, 35). Being the member of a familyis not the way to get into heaven.

Memories of Nepal lifeOn August 12 1968, I obeyed a call from God togo to Nepal as a missionary teacher. My workplace was about three days walking fromKathmandu the capital city of Nepal. That placewas a hilly village called Luitel, in GorkhaDistrict in Gandaki Zone in Nepal. I was teachingthere for more than two years as a bachelor. Everynight we used to pray about two hours for Nepal. Our team consists of an American lady teacher,Ms Eleanore Elkins our headmaster VargheseThomas sir and Nepali teacher Mr Krishna andme. It was a time of our hearts reaching heavens. At that time, there were approximately 300Christians in the entire nation. Now it is estimated that there are fifteen lakhs Christians. There areabout 3915 villages in 75 Districts and 14 Zones in Nepal. Church leaders told me that there arehardly any villages in Nepal without churches. The church growth in Nepal is amazing. In Kerala,in Malappuram District Christians and churches are in existance only in Erinad Taluk. We findvery few churches in other Taluques.

I was transferred to another village High school, Adharsha Paropokar High school, JAUBARI,in 1970 which is 10 hours walking distance from Luitel as there was no motorable roads. Therewere three female missionaries. I was the first male Christian there. Later when Santha, my wifejoined JAUBARI, we were the first Christian family. Villagers measured Christianity looking atour life. Our responsibility was great. I taught English and Geography to students of 6 to 10. Mywife taught Science to them. The number of students were very limited. In those days, NarayanKaji Shrestha was one of our students. He is now the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Ministerof Nepal Govt. led by Mr. Babu Ram Batta Rai, the Prime Minister who too was a student of AmarJothi High School Luitel where I was teaching earlier. Babu Ram used to attend Sunday service inthe Chapel. While he was doing his PhD in JNU in Delhi he became a Maoist. During my recentvisit to Nepal, I could meet the Deputy Prime Minister in his official residence for 20 minutes on17th April 2012.

The golden period of lifeI was a career Missionary in Nepal from August 1968 to December 1973. If anybody asks me

which was the golden period in your life? My answer will be my life and service in Nepal is thegolden period in my life. Life was difficult, but it was beautiful. There is a Greek saying that it isnot easy things but difficult things are always beautiful.

In 1987, I revisited Nepal and renewed ourfriendship and fellowship in Kathmandu, Luitel,Amppipal and JAUBARI. We both werepraying for a family visit to Nepal. God wasgracious and He made it possible to arrange atrip to Nepal from April 5 to 20, 2012.

Kollam to New DelhiIt was Thursday 5th April 2012. Santha, my

wife and I began our journey at 8 pm fromQulion in the Raja Dhani Express. It was acomfortable journey and we reached safely inNew Delhi by 1 pm on 7th April. ICPF regionalstaff Bro. Moncy and student’s leaders receivedus and they had taken to Moncy’s residence. Itwas quite hot. Moncy and his wife gave us goodhospitality.

On 8th April Sunday, we as a family withTito, our Delhi staff joined the church service ofPr Jacob John who stood with Delhi ICPF forthe last several years. Pr. Jacob John gave usgood hospitality. Though we have visited Delhimany times since 1971, we were not bothered tovisit Taj Mahal in Agra. This time we decided tosee the “miracle in marble” a monument of love.

On 9th April, Monday we paid a visit to Agrafort and Taj Mahal. Our life is always of full ofretreats, camps, conferences, night vigil etc. Itwas a time away from all such programmes. Itwas a season of refreshing.

Reaching KathmanduOn Tuesday 10th April we set out for

Kathmandu by flight from New Delhi. It tookhardly two hours to reach Tribhuvan Airport,

Kathmandu. We set our foot on Nepal soil after25 years and Santha after 39 years. My friend P.A. Thomas and my former boss Varghese

Thomas sir and a Nepali couple Sani and hiswife received us in the Airport. Kathmandu haschanged a lot. It has become a over coweredcity. We took rest at P. A. Thomas’s residence.Thomas along with his wife Santhamma andother men of God built the University studentwork there called Nepali Bishwa BidhyalayaChristiya Bidhyarthi Sangathi (NBCBS)

Who is Older?

An American and an Englishman were arguing about theirachievements in antiquity. The Englishman said, “Our archaeology department was digging

in one place in England. When they went 1000 ft deep, they got telephone parts. So way back wehad discovered telephone for our communication.” The American said “Our archaeology departmentwas digging 2000 ft deep in New York. So it reached very deep and very ancient times.” TheEnglishman agreed and said, ‘Okay, now you tell me what they found at 2000 ft deep below thesea level. “The American replied that they found nothing at 2000 ft depth. “What does it prove?”queried the Englishman. The American replied in triumphant tone “You see, we found no telephoneparts, so it proves that we were using wireless at that time!?

Blessed Assurance…

“For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God, thespirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children ofGod”-Romans 8:14.

For many of us, there may be times when we doubt the leading of the HolySpirit. Sometimes it’s because of a feeling of guilt that we have made a wrongmove. Satan will aggravate that feeling, until we begin to think of our lives asfailures. It is then that the Holy Spirit will bear witness with our spirit ‘that weare the children of God.’ He encourages us that we are indeed His children, and that He has led us in the Divine will.

The Holy Spirit lead us in God’s way, and He does bear witness that webelong to God and that He is pleased with us. When we look back, we arereally thankful for all His blessings in the past. There has been nothing whichbrought any evil, for all things have worked for good. Each incident hasbrought us closer to the Lord, and has given us a greater desire to please Him.

Of course, there were occasions when there was distress anddisappointment. But the inner glow of the spirit which gave the blessedassurance was the motivation to move on. There is victory for us, as long aswe take all things directly from the hand of God. Then, we get the assuranceand direction to move on, not somehow but triumphantly. As a whole year haselapsed since we included this column ‘Just a Prelude,’ we want to thankeveryone who has encouraged us by way of words and letters. We thank youespecially for your prayers for this ministry. Our sincere prayer for each oneof our readers is that the Spirit will lead them in the path of righteousnessuntil the first trumpet sounds that great event-the coming of Jesus for HisBride…

Fading joys and failing treasures of the world cannot in anyway hold backmen of God from experiencing His glorious presence…

Sin Separates

The Bible says: Your iniquities have separated you from your God; yoursins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear (Isaiah 59:2)

People are not serious about sin. Sin can be defined as the transgression ofGod’s law by thought, word, deed, wickedness, evil, iniquity. Sin is alsodescribed as missing the target.

Charles Finney, the great revivalist of the 19th Century coined the terms sinof omission and sin of commission. When we fail to do good, we are guilty ofomission. If we don’t love God and our fellow men and women we arecommitting the sin of omission. When we don’t pray, meditate the word ofGod we commit the same sin. If we avoid Christian fellowship, we are againcommitting the sin of omission. The church that does not evangelize invitesits own extinction. The list can be expanded.

What is sin of commission? The act of shooting or stabbing someonewould be sin of commission. Besides murder, adultery, fornication, homosexuality, or even desire for such immoral activity, idolatry, blasphemy, disobedience to parents, the withholding of justice, sorcery hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambitions, dissension, , factions, drunkenness, cheating, bribery etc. are sins of commission.

Like Noah and Lot’s days the world has become a dangerous place to livein. Sin is found even in the sanctuary. It is time for Achan to be stoned andburied. The Lord will judge his people. It is a dreadful thing to fall into thehands of the living God. It seems it is necessary for Jonathan Edward (1703 –1758) to rise up from his grave to preach his firy sermon “Sinners in the handsof an angry God”.

It is time for sinners and saints alike to fall at the feet of Jesus Christ toconfess their sins and forsake them and surrender themselves for a holy living.

Thought for thinking: If I don’t take sin seriously, how will I grasp thewonder of grace and forgiveness, through the sacrifice of Christ.

“Remember ye not the former things, neitherconsider the things of old. Behold, I will do a newthing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not knowit? I will even make a way in the wilderness, andrivers in the desert.” (Isaiah 43:18, 19). This wasthe scripture Dr Paulson Pulikottil spoke at theICPF family meeting of staff workers in Dubai inMarch 2009. The exhortation was simple: forgetthe past; God is going to do something new.

Fast forward to June 23, 2012, and Dubai ICPFChapter held its one-day retreat marking a newbeginning to student ministry in the emirate. Detox5.23 saw nearly 100 students gather at Holy Trinitychurch compound at Oud Metha from 9am to4.30pm. The event was revolutionary in manyaspects. It was the first big event for a new teamat the Dubai Chapter.

And God did make a way in the wildernessand rivers in the desert. Detox 5.23 wasinaugurated by Pastor Alex Abraham. The HolySpirit began to move in a special way as soon asthe worship session got under way led by ICPFRefiners. The stage was set for the administration

Dubai Retreat – Youth DETOX 5.23of the word of God by Peter Alexander from theAmerican Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Juxtaposing histestimony of growing up in New York City withthe word of God, he invited students to forgo fearand take a leap of faith into the hands of God.

Next, Jerin took stage expounded on the themeof detoxing and living clean in a polluted world. The thrust was it was God alone who can keepour spirit, soul and body blameless and holy atthe coming of the Lord.

Post lunch saw student leader Joel Saji beingstraight and real, and speaking from actualexperiences in his life, he asked students to giveJesus a chance to change their lives. The mightyworking of the Holy Spirit was witnessed in thehall with many students coming forward to submittheir lives to the Lord.

Students were given mentors in the retreat andalso divided into interest groups to further theirrelationship with the Lord. All in all, it was action-packed day in Dubai. Amen!
