Aims and objectivesAim:

• Introduce learners to sustainable materials.

Objectives:

• Explain what sustainability means.

• Describe sustainable materials and their use in construction.

• Follow a scenario and research and suggest how to use sustainable materials on a house. This could take the form of a group presentation.

• Design a house using sustainable materials.

Construction sustainability• To building professionals, sustainability means designing to meet, or

exceed, environmental targets with good use of raw and recycled materials, energy, renewables, etc.

• To developers sustainability means ensuring that their building projects make money.

• To owners sustainability means ensuring that their buildings can be occupied or let profitably over the short, medium and long term.

• To occupiers sustainability means buildings that people who care about the environment want to live in.

Sustainable materialsWhen purchasing construction materials, one of the best methods to help ensure sustainability is to source them locally and ensure they are British made. This ensures that transportation of the materials is kept to an absolute minimum. Using reclaimed and recycled materials is also good for sustainability.

Sustainable materials continued• Bricks – wool bricks, unfired clay bricks

• Blocks – hemp blocks, aerated concrete, insulated concrete form (ICF)

• Mortar – lime, Portland cement substitute, pulverised fuel ash

• Timber – FSC® sourced

• Concrete – use recycled reinforcement, cement with lime or pulverised fuel ash

• Flooring – cork, FSC® timber, locally sourced stone tiles, British-manufactured ceramic tiles

• Windows – timber manufactured, triple glazed

• Insulation – sheep’s wool, hemp wool, timber fibre, paper, denim wool

Sustainable materials continued• Heating – air-source heat pump, ground-source heat pump, solar

water heating, wood-fuelled heating, thermal store

• Electricity – photovoltaic (solar) panels, wind turbines

• Straw – straw blocks as structure

• Roof coverings – Welsh slate, green roof
