Master’s DegreesMaster of Arts in Education (MAED) — Page 7Expand your knowledge and skills related to curriculum, instruction,

technology and assessment through this non-licensure degree. Increase your

abilities as an educator in a variety of educational contexts.

Master of Arts in Human Services (MAHS) — Page 8Apply your Christian faith to prepare for or continue work in social services

settings. Learn how to provide non-therapeutic assistance to people in need or

pursue further graduate study in human services or social sciences.

Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) — Page 9Increase biblical knowledge and bring a Christian worldview to your

profession. The MATS is a good choice for those interested in lay leadership or

anticipating further study and/or service in professional ministry.

Flexible Learning Formats Whether you attend class on site

one night a week, take courses

online, or do a combination of

If you enjoy dynamic discussion,

strong peer support and expanding

your mind by interacting with others,

the one-night-a-week, on-site courses

may work best for you. You’ll learn in

person from expert professors and

work on collaborative projects with

other students.

ONLINE — MATS, M.Div. and MOL

Our online programs provide the

opportunity to take courses without

disrupting your career or other

scheduled activities. As an online

learner, you’ll be part of a cohort

and interact with each other and

professors through course sites,

e-mail and other electronic means.

BLENDED — MAED and MAHS

In the blended learning format,

classes meet on campus once a

week for 2½ hours, complemented

by approximately 1½ hours of online

class work, plus related group and

independent study time that varies

based on the course and individual.

The Master of Arts in Education (MAED) is a non-licensure graduate degree

for licensed teachers (P–16) who wish to expand knowledge and skills related

to curriculum, instruction, technology and assessment.

Northwestern’s outstanding education faculty and reputation for excellence

in teacher preparation are the marks of this Christ-centered master’s degree

program. You will be affirmed in your calling and prepared to advance as you

develop as a master educator.

Synthesize curriculum process, learning theory, assessment and evaluation to

enhance professional decision-making and leadership.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY

Integrate sound instructional design principles and technological media to

provide quality instruction and technological leadership.

IMMIGRATION & EDUCATION

Integrate social integration theories, national policy, resources, and current

issues faced by immigrant populations to design effective, culturally

responsive learning experiences and environments.

The Master of Arts in Human Services (MAHS) is an applied non-licensure

degree program that will help you develop your professional abilities to assess

and meet the needs of people. You will learn to look at individual and systemic

needs and solutions. The MAHS will also help you prepare for further graduate

study in human or social sciences programs.

You will develop an understanding of how to assist people experiencing

complex, problematic situations, how faith and human services intersect,

how research can facilitate understanding people and their needs, and how to

design and evaluate human services programs.

Course of StudyThe Master of Arts in Human Services is granted upon completion of 36

credits. Coursework can be completed in approximately 18–22 months.

IS THE MAHS FOR YOU?

The MAHS degree is designed for

those who work or want to pursue

work in private or public social

services settings providing non-

therapeutic assistance to people in

need. It is also appropriate if you

work in a setting where you apply

psychological insights; for example,

in roles such as pastor, human

resource director, teacher, coach,

nurse, public health worker, law

enforcement officer, manager, or

student affairs personnel.

As both an academic and professional degree, the Master of Arts in

Theological Studies (MATS) provides biblical and theological training to equip

you for effective ministry in the church, workplace, parachurch organizations

or academic settings.

Concentrations

BIBLE EXPOSITION

The Bible exposition concentration is for individuals who desire to study the

Word of God at a deeper level, presenting an expository study of the Bible from

Genesis to Revelation.

BIBLICAL STUDIES

The biblical studies concentration is designed for students who plan to use the

biblical languages (Hebrew and Greek) in their ministries.

THEOLOGY

The theology concentration includes study of systematic theology, apologetics

and ethics. If you’re considering further study toward your M.Div. or at the

doctorate level, the theology concentration provides an excellent foundation.

Course of StudyThe Master of Arts in Theological Studies is granted upon completion of 36

credits. Coursework can be completed in approximately 18–22 months.

Master of Arts in Theological StudiesON-SITE OR ONLINE FORMAT

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN CHRISTIAN STUDIESNorthwestern offers a Graduate Certificate in Christian Studies that includes the five core courses of the MATS degree. You’ll expand core theological knowledge and gain skills to equip you for ministry. The certificate can be completed in approximately eight months, and course credit will fully transfer toward completion of the MATS or M.Div.

The Master of Divinity (M.Div.) is a comprehensive, pre-doctoral degree

that combines theology and Christian ministry with a selected concentration

in either Bible exposition or biblical studies. The program builds upon

Northwestern’s history and commitment to biblically based, evangelical

theology. The M.Div. serves as excellent preparation for pastoral or chaplaincy

positions, as well as pursuit of advanced degrees.

Course of StudyThe Master of Divinity curriculum is integrated with Northwestern’s Master of

Arts in Theological Studies (MATS), described on page 9. The M.Div. program

includes the MATS core curriculum and theology concentration (36 credits),

plus a chosen concentration in either Bible exposition or biblical studies (20

credits) and a series of ministerial courses (20 credits). The M.Div. is granted

upon completion of 76 credits, and you can earn your degree in approximately

44–48 months. Students who elect to do so may obtain both the MATS and

M.Div. degrees for the complete course of study.

Master of Organizational Leadership

The Master of Organizational Leadership (MOL) offers a dynamic course

of study that explores a variety of leadership venues including businesses,

churches, nonprofit organizations and government. At Northwestern you’ll

find a learning environment where your life experience and perspectives are

valued. You’ll be challenged to grow spiritually and intellectually as you learn

from your professors and colleagues in your cohort.

Northwestern faculty members bring expertise from a variety of perspectives

and venues such as business, ministry and education. Through their teaching
