Step 1: Identify the Project

What goals does the person occupying the space have for the room? What is envisioned for the new space?

What time frame are you under? Be realistic

What is the budget allowed for the project? Determines if all goals can be met

Step 2: Assess Client Characteristics

Habits? Likes? Dislikes? Needs? Wants? Written questionarre/take notes from meeting Family inventory (lifestyle, expectations,

entertaining preferences, preferred atmosphere, etc.)

Step 3: Analyze the Environment

Environment Inventory Number of rooms and placement Activity zones Storage areas Furniture/accessories Condition of backgrounds Electrical and wiring Safety Traffic flow Take measurements (make templates for space plan)

Step 4: Develop a Preliminary Budget

Physical needs for project Service fees Contingency fee Calculate cost of materials

Step 5: Compile a Design Resource File

Photos client has saved Before photos of space to be designed Find sources for ideas

Decorating magazines Furniture/accessory catalogs Websites Newspapers How-to/Reference books

Present to person who will occupy space for likes/dislikes to be determined
