Accountability

How did you integrate “Humility” as a focus on learning into your life this past week?

If we want to succeed in life and to learn from our losses, we must be able to face reality and use it to create a foundation for growth.

The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. Why is this so important?

Reality is the Foundation of Learning

Facing Reality  is Often Difficult?

Losing Sight of Reality

We cannot create positive change in our lives if we are confused about what’s really happening.

• As much as an escape from reality might give us temporary relief from our problems, the truth is it's easier to go from failure to success than it is from excuses to success.

We cannot create positive change in our lives if we are confused about what's really happening.

You can't improve yourself if you're not being honest with yourself.

Drawbacks of Not Facing Reality

Three Realities of Life

1) Life Is Difficult

People seem to believe that life is supposed to be easy. We expect a smooth and easy road to success.

Once we accept the fact that life is hard, we begin to grow.

Nothing worth having in life comes without effort.

Everyone’s reality is different. However, there are some

realities that are true for all life.

Three Realities of Life 2) Life is Difficult for

EVERYONE Even if we are willing to concede that life is difficult for most people, deep down inside many of us secretly hope somehow that this truth won’t apply to us.

“The walking of man is falling forwards.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

The people who succeed in life don’t try to escape pain, loss, or unfairness. They just learn to face those things, accept them, and move ahead in the face of them.

Three Realities of Life 3) Life is more difficult

for some than for others.

Life is more difficult for some people than it is for others. The playing field is not level.

Comparing our lives to others ultimately isn’t productive. Life isn’t fair, and we shouldn’t expect it to be.

“The challenges in our lives are there to strengthen our convictions. They are NOT there to run us over.” – Nick Vujicic

Don’t Make Life Harder for YourselfKey 1: Life is

more difficult for those who stop growing and learning.

Some people never make the intentional effort to grow.

Others don’t value growth and hope to progress in life without pursuing it.

For such people, life is more difficult than it would be if they were dedicating themselves to continual improvement.

Don’t Make Life Harder for YourselfKey 2: Life is

more difficult for those who don’t think effectively.

One of the most striking things that separate people who are successful from those who aren’t is the way they think.

Successful people are continually thinking about what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and how they can improve.

“Change Your Thinking,

Change Your life.”

– John C. Maxwell

Don’t Make Life Harder for YourselfKey 3: Life is

more difficult for those who don’t face reality.

Life is difficult. However, many things you desire to do in life are attainable if you will face reality, know your starting place, consider the cost of your goal, and put in the hard work to obtain your goal.

Ensure you have people in your life who will speak the truth to you.

“Face reality as it is, not as it was or as you wish it were.” - Jack Welch

“Most people spend their entire lives on a fantasy

island called ‘Someday I’ll.’”

– Denis Waitley

Don’t Make Life Harder for YourselfKey 4: Life is

more difficult for those who are slow to make proper adjustments.

The stress of a difficult situation can make you forget your plan and if you don’t handle the situation well, you won’t be able to make adjustments.

If you face reality, you can create a foundation making it possible for you to make proper adjustments. And that greatly increases your odds of success.

I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination.” - Jimmy Dean

“I have a plan of action, but the

game is a game of adjustments.”

– Coach K

Don’t Make Life Harder for YourselfKey 5: Life is

more difficult for those who don’t respond correctly to challenges.

People who respond correctly to adversity realize that their response to a challenge is what impacts the outcome. They accept and acknowledge the reality of their situation, and then act accordingly.

Questions to Ponder“Leadership is about creating a domain in

which human beings continually deepen their understanding of reality and become more capable of participating in the unfolding world. Ultimately, leadership is about creating new realities.” – Peter Senge

Are you facing reality or living in denial? What reality do you need to face? What reality are you avoiding?Do you allow people to speak truthfully and honestly to you?
