The second Cherry Hinton Village Newsletter provides information on a range of events in the village over the next few weeks. The highlight being Cherry Hinton Festival. For those who don’t know the whole week is masterminded by a group of volunteers and this year there is a new Committee running the show and they have lots of ideas for an even bigger programme next year. Look out for details of the AGM which will be held later this year - an opportunity to get involved.

We had lots of feedback from the last newsletter, we certainly had enough response to indicate that some form of publication would be useful - we are conscious that not everyone has regular access to the internet and even for those who do we received a lot of support for a printed news option. It’s taken us a while to get number two out, our aim will be to have a newsletter each quarter, but this will very much depend on receiv-ing sufficient news you want included to share so if you have anything you want do please contact us.

Some of you may remember that the first newsletter provided some information on the village survey, the final analysis clearly demonstrated a need for some community space. The Residents Association have worked with the Community Development Team and Cambridgeshire Library services and we now have a space in the library. This is just the start, we now need to make use of it - we want to encourage groups in need of a home to think how it could work for them and we are hoping perhaps more importantly that new groups will appear inspired by the fact that there is somewhere to meet - low-cost and centrally located.

Do remember that you can keep up to date via the Cherry Hinton Resi-dents website www.cherryhintonvillage.co.uk and through the new notice boards in the library and on the recreation ground. If you would like to tell us about an event, offer some news, run a column or advertise with us then get in touch via: Email: [email protected] or leave a letter addressed to the Newsletter Team, c/o Cherry Hinton Library.

CHERRY HINTON DEFIBRILLATOR FUND FUNDRAISING DISCO PARTY NIGHT

The Cherry Hinton Village Centre will be hosting a Disco Party night on Saturday 12th October. 7.30pm – Late. Tickets £5.00. All the money raised at this event will go towards the £2000 needed to purchase a defibrillator for the Village of Cherry Hinton. The device will be sited in the Village for the use of the whole community. Local resident and former Netherhall student Tom Smith, passed away in October 2011 after playing Sunday league football on the recreation ground. At the age of only 23, the tragic sudden death of this popular and athletic young man, was a devastating shock, not just to Tom’s family and friends, but the whole community.

We would like to provide a defibrillator for the Village in memory of Tom.

On reaching our target, any additional money raised will go to the Charity S.A.D.S (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome)

Cherry Hinton Lions FC is one of the largest established clubs within Cambridgeshire, formed in 1983 we have recently celebrated being a big part of the community for 30 years.

It’s a well known fact that the life blood of every club like ours, are the youngsters. We now run ‘ Drop-In Sessions ‘ for children between the ages of 4 to 6 years old. The outdoor venue for the sessions is: Cherry Hinton Recreation Ground, High Street, Cherry Hinton from 10am – 11am every Saturday at a cost of £5 per session

These sessions are designed to be fun as well as educa-tional, and hopefully the children will develop an insight into the game and a desire to learn more. When that happens, we can gradually lter them into our teams. Should you require any further information on the sessions then please contact Dave Allan (tel: 07733 263300 – email: [email protected].

We recently said farewell to our U17 team back in May 2013. Many of the boys had played in the team since the age of 7. We had a great last game of the season, celebrations being held with the players and parents after, however it was also tinged with some sadness that an end of an era had arrived. We are pleased to say that many of these boys will be continuing with the club and will be entering our T20 league this season. Anyone who is aged between 17 and 20 may participate and if anyone wishes to come along to training please do so – this takes place on Tuesday evening at Cherry Hinton Rec 6.30 – 7.30 pm. For further information please contact the Club Secretary. The T20 league is played on Sunday afternoons.

For further information about the club, contact Ann Auker (Secretary) 01223 412308 – [email protected] or visit our website www:chlfc.co.uk.

CHERRY HINTON LOCALHISTORY SOCIETY HELP FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS

WITH CAMBRIDGE CVS

Cherry Hinton Residents Association. Secretary : Stuart Newbold Tel : 07904 688799 email: [email protected]

The Local History Society has had a very active year. On the evening of Wednesday 14th August a group visited Impington Mill and some intrepid members climbed right to the top. The visit followed a talk in January by Steve Temple who has renovated the mill with a group of volunteers. His wife Pippa Temple gave a talk on Elizabethan Gardens last year and took us on a tour of her garden showing what she had achieved. As usual many of our talks have focused on Cambridge – Honor Ridout spoke about “Stourbridge Fair” in February and we enjoyed an evening of film in March when Frank Agger and Sam Clift told us about the Regal Cinema. Another change to the usual speaker was Malcolm Busby telling us about Nancy the Waterman in a role-play. It was a great pleasure to welcome back Michelle Bullivant for her postponed talk on “War Ditches, the History of Limekiln Hill” in April – it is amazing to realise that we have this ancient site so close to the village. The date of our July talk had to be re-arranged, which took much emailing and phoning to our members. However this worked to our advantage since the excellent talk by Chloe Cockerill “Pomp and Circum-stance” about Coronations and Jubilees on the 22nd co-incided with the birth of Prince George. The talk was followed by a glass of wine and piece of cake made by our Chair Jenny Taylor to celebrate the Society’s summer break. Ron English, one of our members has again arranged two visits this year. In April 26 members and 3 guests visited 1 Myddleton Place in Saffron Walden a medieval house which ended up being the Youth Hostel but is now back in private hands. Ron also arranged for 23 members to visit Selwyn College. A talk by the archivist and chaplain was followed by a very tasty lunch in the College Dining Room. The Society is taking part in “The Great War Project” which Cambridgeshire and Brighton are the only two British participants with 20 partners in Belgium and France. We will be researching information about what happened in Cherry Hinton and beyond during World War 1. If you have anything that would help us contact us on C. 210724 or talk to us at the Community Groups Fair. Former Mayor John Durrant is making a return visit for our Festival Talk this year on Tuesday 17th September at 7.30pm. He will talk on “Cambridge Past and Present”. Tickets cost £5, £4 for members. Ring C. 210724. If you would like to join us for one of our talks we meet at 7.30pm on the last Monday of the month (except August and December) at St. Andrew’s Church Centre. Guest membership for one talk costs £2.50. Membership for the year is £10 single, £18 couples. (£5 and £9 at this time of year!)

Do you run a community group, charity, club or organisation?Have you ever wanted to set one up to address an issue you are passionate about? If the answer to either of these questions is yes would you know who to turn to for help, advice or support? CCVS is a local charity whose sole aim is to see that there are as many healthy, vibrant and respected community groups and charities as possible; and that they are well run, have the information they need to be successful and are making a real difference to people and communities. So exactly what is on offer, and how can groups benefit?CCVS work is split into three areas1. Providing support We help groups to start up, grow and survive. By offering support on all aspects of running a community group or charity we can answer your questions on funding, finances, how your committee works, employing staff and other areas work.We offer regular training for staff, committee members and volunteers that gives them the skills they need. We also provide regular newsletters and updates to keep you informed about those things that are important to you.2. Providing a voice We act as a voice to promote the excellent work our members do and remind the ‘powers that be’ of the importance of community groups and charities. Too often people do not understand what voluntary and community organisations do and how they operate; this includes many of those in power who are making decisions that affect our members and the people and places they help. CCVS attends many meetings to make sure that the important work you do is recognised and that decisions are made that support your work. 3. Providing connectionsWe want to put you in touch with other organisations in your area who are doing similar work or who are facing (or who have overcome) similar problems. It IS good to talk, and we help groups to find the best people to talk with. What is more all this is free to members. So drop us a line or look at the web site to find out how you can join and start benefiting from all that CCVS can offer.

FRIENDS OF CHERRY HINTON ST ANDREWThe Friends have had a varied programme in 2013. This started in March with another “Tea, Cakes and Brian Roy” afternoon concert, which was attended by 40 people and raised £136-92.Each year we like to introduce new events and one of these happened on Saturday April 27th when East Anglian Guitarists who meet in the Church Centre gave a concert in the Church, which was as usual arranged as an auditorium. The guitarists played mainly classical music but there was the odd light piece e.g. Teddy Bears picnic. As usual the music was greatly enhanced by the acoustics in the Church. Over 70 people attended the concert enjoyed sparkling wine and shortbread in the interval while mixing with the guitarists. The Concert raised £278-44. On Friday 7th June our treasurer Rosemary Wheeler and Friends entertained an audience of 75 with a concert entitled “Music for A June Evening” which raised £350.14. Always a popular event the programme included a mixture of songs from the shows and ended with the audience waving union jack flags as they sang Land of Hope and Glory. In July, Blue Badge Guide, Jeanette Luckhurst led a guided tour from Riverside, across Stourbridge Common to the Leper Chapel. The Friends would like to thank everyone who has attended our events. Funds raised have helped to repair the roof, repaired and refurbished the Centre toilets, paid for security lighting and the emergency door in the Centre as well as, most recently, new curtains for the Centre.
