PURIM: THE UNTOLD STORY

By Ben Kreshtool

The holiday of Purim is one of our more interesting holidays. The miracle that occurs in the megillah happens outside the Land of Israel, the megillah itself does not directly contain the name of God, and on Purim we do not recite hallel. Let us compare that to Chanukah where the Book of Maccabees did not even make it into the canon of our Scriptures, the miracle or miracles did occur in the Land of Israel and we do recite a full hallel on all 8 days of Chanukah.

I have always found it interesting that the Book of Maccabees did not become part of our Bible. The first Book of Maccabees is a distinctly Jewish set of writings originally in Hebrew, that describe the miracle of a victory over a vastly superior fighting force and the rededication of our most sacred space, the Temple in Jerusalem. The reason often given for the exclusion of the Book of Maccabees is that the Rabbis did not want to focus attention on a violent military victory, but I find that to be a weak argument, especially considering the end of Megillat Esther.

Purim however is a holiday of secrets and not all is as it seems. If you look closely at the megillah it will unlock its mysteries and share with you a book deeply connected to the Torah and the Jewish people. I will share just a few examples.

In the first chapter verse 6, the letter chet is enlarged. Tradition teaches us that this symbolizes the stolen 8 garments of the High Priest that Achashverosh was wearing at his party.

The Midrash also tells us that the drinking vessels referred to in verse 7 were golden vessels from the Temple, which is why the melody for the trope is changed to the sad melody of Megillat Eicha which

we read on Tisha B’Av. In chapter 5:4, we have a verse detailing Esther’s invitation to the King and Haman to her banquet. However, if we look closely at the first letters of some of the words, we see revealed the Name of God.

Purim is a holiday of mysteries and masks, a holiday where the goal is to embrace topsy-turvy and upside-down. But look closely and you’ll see that the megillah wants us to discover its secrets. When the masks come off, what’s left is the very core of our being. Purim is a fun holiday but also a serious one. It is a holiday where we are obligated to perform mitzvot and share with others. I hope you will join us here at Beth El to hear the megillah, eat some hamentashen, and try your hand at some karaoke! Chag Sameach!

"Look closely and you’ll see that the megillah wants us to discover its secrets. When the masks come off, what’s left is

the very core of our being."

THE SISTERHOOD JUDAICA SHOP AND THE PERFECT PASSOVER GIFTCreating Your Seder Table: You start with a beautiful tablecloth, maybe one with memories of past Seders and with the hope that no one will spill wine on it. Then you arrange your lovely china, gleaming crystal and newly shined silver. Now for those important symbolic pieces that will help create the mood and spirit of Passover.

Perhaps the kids would respond to a new Seder plate; something colorful with a modern theme. A container for the affikomin covered by an embroidered matzo cover from Israel would be meaningful to everyone. Pesach requires so many dishes – small, medium, round, square and octagonal to contain the recipes each family considers special. Oven-to-table platters promise that the main course will be hot and delicious just like Grandma’s but with half as much to wash.

There is a place where you can find all these things. Stop in the Sisterhood Judaica Shop and use your personal taste to create the perfect Seder table. Make some new memories.

Judaica ShopBeth ElRABBI DANA SAROKEN’S BOOK REVIEWWednesday, March 14, 2018 at 12:00 PMRabbi Dana Saroken will review A Bride for One Night by Ruth Calderon. Ruth Calderon has recently electrified the Jewish world with her teachings of Talmudic texts. In this volume, she offers a fascinating window into some of the liveliest and most colorful stories of the Talmud. Calderon rewrites Talmudic tales as richly imagined fiction, drawing us into the lives of such characters as the woman who risks her life for a sister suspected of adultery; a humble schoolteacher who rescues his village from drought; and a wife who dresses as a prostitute to seduce her pious husband in their garden. Breathing new life into an ancient text, A Bride for One Night offers a surprising and provocative read, both for anyone already intimate with the Talmud or for anyone interested in one of the most influential works of Jewish literature.

The cost for the luncheon and book review is $12. You may send payment to Beth El Sisterhood, attention Judy Pachino or Barbara Levenson, 8101 Park Heights Avenue, Pikesville, MD 21208. Your canceled check is your reservation.

UNIQUE BOUTIQUE ARRIVES IN THE SPRINGEven though winter is still with us, plans for Unique Boutique 2018 are underway. This is the 14th year of Unique Boutique to be held on Sunday, April 29, Monday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 1.

Beth El Sisterhood will welcome over 40 vendors who will bring three days of exciting shopping for your spring needs. Many of your favorite vendors are returning, and we are looking forward to welcoming many new vendors with new products. They will be selling women’s clothing and accessories, pocketbooks, belts, jewelry, gifts for the home, toys, crafts, children’s clothing, specialized food items, personalized gifts, stationery and much more.

Lunch is available at the Boutique Café either before or after shopping. In addition, the Flower Farm will be with us for your spring gardening needs and Mother’s Day gifts.

ClubMen’s

Once again, Beth El Men’s Club and Sisterhood have joined forces to plan and provide for the Annual Purim Carnival – this year scheduled for Sunday, February 25 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. Last year’s Carnival received rave reviews from the clergy, teachers and especially the kids!! This year promises to be even better – so DON’T MISS IT!!

The photo booth last year proved to be quite a draw. This year we will have a great new game as well as an exciting addition to our food menu. Both additions will be highlights of the event.

To ensure success for the children of our congregation we need the help and support of both our Sisterhood and Men’s Club. With your commitment, we can make this the biggest and best Purim Carnival ever.

There’s nothing more important than providing a meaningful and enjoyable event for our children. To volunteer, please contact Jonathan Rosenberg or Bobbie Selnick. We can’t do it without you. Thanks in advance for your support.

THE INSIDE STORY OF THEODOR HERZLFrom Private Individual to Renowned Jewish Political Leader Mondays, March 5, 12, & 19 from 7:00-8:15 PMFACILITATOR: Rachel Glaser

As we approach the 70th anniversary of Modern Israel this spring, the vision of Theodor Herzl, known as the Founder of Modern Zionism, can still inspire and amaze us. How did a young Viennese journalist with ambitions of becoming a playwright develop into a Jewish leader who would be so instrumental in the future formation of the State of Israel? What drove him to follow a dream which would become a reality? In this three part series, we will explore Herzl’s intellectual, spiritual, and political journey as we study his life and his transformation through his diaries and other writings. Held in the Agus Library.

FEE: $40 Beth El members, $50 non-members

ODESSA STRING QUARTET Wednesday, March 7, at 7:30 PM in the Offit AuditoriumJoin us for a lovely evening that will feature the Odessa String Quartet, a professional musical group established in 2012 by members of the orchestra of the Opera of Valencia. The quartet is part of the cultural life of Spain. The Quartet consists of four young temperamental, bright and ambitious musicians, who are looking for perfection in every sound. As our lives change, so do the demands on our time. Finding balance between the factors that compete for our time is one of life’s greatest ongoing challenges, but what does Judaism have to say about finding and maintaining balance in our lives? Do the Rabbis have anything to say? Explore this topic in four lessons focused on family, work and community, self, and overall balance. Held in the Agus Library.

SWEET SINGERS OF ISRAELOperas with a Jewish Air Thursdays, March 8, 15, & 22 from 7:00-8:15 PMFACILITATOR: Cantor Thom King, Beth El Hazzan

Every opera lover is familiar with Nabucco and Samson and Delilah, which are based upon Biblical accounts. What about non-Biblical operas that contain Jewish characters? How did the Zeitgeist, or spirit of the time in which they were created, affect how the Jewish characters are presented and why? In this course we will explore three different operas: Freudenthal Halevy’s La Juive (The Jewess), Pietro Mascagni’s L’Amico Fritz (The Good Neighbor Fritz), and Kurt Weill’s Der Weg der Verheissung (The Eternal Road). Premiered in 1835, 1891, and 1937, respectively, each of these operas reflect the times in which they were composed and performed. Through musical examples and discussion, we will explore how opera has shaped the perception of Jews and vice versa. Held in the Kolker Room.

FEE: No charge – sponsors are welcome

HARD HEARTS AND HUBRISPharoah and Macbeth: A Pre-Passover Learning SessionWednesday, March 14 from 7:00-8:00 PMFACILITATOR: Gail Lipsitz

The Exodus story tells us that Pharoah’s heart was hardened either by himself or by God twenty times. His repeated refusals to let the Israelites go are direct challenges to God’s power. Shakespeare’s Macbeth is another tyrant described as becoming hard-hearted and arrogant. Both rulers are brought down by hubris, or the “arrogance of power.” What can we learn from these characters about the psychological and emotional process of hardening one’s heart? What are the consequences for that individual and for others? Held in the Agus Library.

ENJOY AN EVENING WITH

Gilbert Sandler Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00 PM

Please join us as we celebrate a Baltimore Treasure. It is our great pleasure to welcome Gilbert Sandler to the Rabbi Mark G. Loeb Center for Lifelong Learning as we celebrate his unique contributions – not only to the Jewish Community but to the Baltimore Community at large. Through the spoken and written word, Gilbert Sandler has entertained and informed his audiences. Beth El Congregation will take this opportunity to show our appreciation for his many years of sharing his wit, wisdom and humor.

We want to say thank you to him and acknowledge his amazing contribution to our Jewish community. Mr. Sandler will share with us stories of Baltimore’s glorious past and perhaps offer a prediction for Baltimore resurgence in the future. He will tell stories of humble beginnings, special events, and famous people. Dr. Eyal Bor, Director of the Rabbi Mark G. Loeb Center for Lifelong Learning says, “This promises to be an unforgettable and inspiring evening for all.” Be present to hear this storyteller extraordinaire as we show our appreciation for his many accomplishments.

Enjoy a dessert reception following the program. Held in the Berman-Rubin Sanctuary.

FEE: No charge - sponsors are welcome

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRDWhose Story Is It?Tuesdays, March 20, 27, April 3, 10, 17, 24, & May 1 from 7:00-8:30 PMFACILITATOR: Jon Aaron teaches at McDonogh’s Middle School. Over the course of his 40-year career at McDonogh, he has held teaching, administrative, coaching, and advising positions; in addition, Jon has directed dramas and musicals involving students grades four to twelve. He holds a BA in English from Boston University and an MLA from Johns Hopkins University.

To Kill a Mockingbird has remained beloved and relevant since its publication in 1960. Reflecting on the appearance in 2015 of the novel’s “first draft,” Go Set a Watchman, and Harper Lee’s death early in 2016, this course celebrates the author’s gift to the American literary tradition. Participants read both books before the opening class to explore deeply the core question of the course, “Whose Story Is It?” In considering this question, we will discuss the following: the origins and proliferation of Jim Crow; thematically related poetry; a James Baldwin essay; the art of Aaron Douglas and Norman Rockwell; music ranging from Billie Holiday to the Broadway musical Big River; and excerpts from the film classic starring Gregory Peck. Please note that this is not a lecture.

Though Jon will present diverse concepts and perspectives, he creates a respectful class atmosphere and encourages participants to share their insights. Held in the Agus Library.

FEE: $50 Beth El members, $60 non-members. The fee includes a copy of both To Kill A Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman.

LEARNING AND FUN by Dr. Robert KeehnWhen I was a youngster, I remember my father telling me that it was important to learn something new every day. With my history of receiving a Jewish parochial education and attending a Jewish camp for thirteen summers, I understand the importance of our children and grandchildren obtaining a basic Hebrew education.

This past Sunday, I had the opportunity, along with President Denise Franz, Hal Hackerman, and Rebecca Fruman to visit The Berman-Lipavsky Religious School. We all met at Dr. Bor’s office for bagels and briefing. Amy Goldberg, assistant principal, first took us to see the youngest children. This is the “sibling class” where parents also drop off older children to other classes. This allows the parents to have some free time. We watched the young ones stand and stretch upwards while singing accompanied by Morah Becky on her guitar. All had marvelous smiles on their faces.

We then visited Kitah Dalet, where the students, with the help of Rabbi Sam, were making halavah, using the recipe they received from their friends in Ashkelon (it brought back memories of the “nut man” whose store was adjacent to

my father’s on the lower Eastside of New York). Earlier they skyped with children in Ashkelon, Israel, Baltimore’s sister city.

On to Kitah Gimel, (biased because it’s my granddaughter, Molly’s class) where the children were working on a project about Israel. This was a very informal setting where everyone seemed to be engaged.

We then moved to the Atid class of about 15 bar and bat mitzvah aged students with Andy Shankman (from my Ulpan class) and Rabbi Saroken. The students were engaged with issues related to leadership. How important it is for teens to continue their Jewish education.

But what impressed me the most was the T’filah service, which was held in the Gorn Chapel. All students were present and each class went up to the bimah to sing or recite a prayer with Morah Becky playing her guitar. I was able to experience the enthusiasm of both the students and teachers. All were LEARNING and having FUN.

Kol Hakavod to Dr. Bor and his staff.

HEBREW SCHOOL IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOODThe Hebrew School in Your Neighborhood Program, Berman-Lipavsky Religious School’s satellite program is in the midst of another strong year as approximately 50 students are being educated among our four locations-Hunt Valley, Roland Park, Federal Hill and Howard County. The Neighborhood Schools started in the mid 90’s at Roland Park, the first site. It was difficult to find teachers to teach off-campus, therefore Dr. Bor together with former Assistant Principal, Tzahi Posner taught the class. Dr. Bor remembers, “It was a wonderful experience to interact with the students and their parents at Roland Park. Our goal again was to reach students and their families and help them overcome any difficulty they faced in providing a Jewish education for their children.” Roland Park continues to be a vibrant satellite school; this year we expanded the program to offer three, age-appropriate classes, each with its own teacher.

There are many components to the Hebrew School in Your Neighborhood Program that make it a unique and unparalleled program in the Baltimore area. The goals of the program are to be convenient, educational and engaging for students and families. Beth El is proactive in providing a program that meets families where they are; the neighborhood schools are offered in areas that would otherwise be challenging for families to commute to Beth El’s main campus in Pikesville. Each school meets during the week, directly after school. At two of our locations, the teachers pick the students up from school and walk them to the satellite location. The curriculum at the neighborhood schools is hands-on and creative, offering multi-dimensional learning strategies such as iPads and screens, group learning with students of varying ages, and outside resources in the community. Each teacher provides programming that is tailored to the needs of their unique group of students. In Howard County, students have two periods, one where they learn Hebrew based on their level with Morah Ellen and then they switch to participate in Judaic learning with Morah Lisa. In Federal Hill, Morah Rachel focuses on hands- on learning with her students; they wrote, practiced and presented a Hanukkah play for the families as part of their Hanukkah celebration. At Roland Park, a tutor is on site to offer one-on-one B’nai Mitzvah tutoring sessions as there are several students who are preparing for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

This year we have utilized many resources in the community that have been integrated into the curriculum. We offer community service opportunities through Jewish Volunteer Connection; during the holidays, each student prepared Thanksgiving treat packages for the Meals on Wheels clients as well as collected socks for JVC’s annual Community Mitzvah Day. This semester students are looking forward to welcoming Avia and Benny, Baltimore’s Shinshinim, Israel emissaries from Ashkelon, who will lead Israel education programming for the students at each neighborhood school on a regular basis.

For the future, the goal is to continue to enhance the Neighborhood School program. One idea is to include more community service programming where students would go to organizations around their neighborhood to learn about the needs and take part in Tikkun Olam. In addition, the hope is to expand Beth El’s reach into flourishing areas of Baltimore such as Towson and Lutherville/Timonium.

For more information about the Hebrew School in Your Neighborhood program, please contact Amy Goldberg, Director of Neighborhood Schools at [email protected] or 410-484-4543.
