What is Chain stitch?

Passing of a loop of thread through another loop formed by the same thread is called chain stitch or Intralooping.

Mechanism of Chain Stitch Machine5

Page 6: Chain Stitch Presentation

Chain stitch was used by early sewing machines and has 2 major drawbacks:

1.The stitch is not self-locking, and if the thread breaks at any point or isn't tied at both ends, the whole length of stitching comes out. It's also easily ripped out.

2.The direction of chain stitch is much difficult to change. It’s required experienced worker.

Bed Types

The classification of sewing machine bed types is based on the manner in which:-

• The fabric travels with respect to the bed while being sewed

• The frame of the machine is constructed for mounting the machine.

13

Bed Types

• Flat Bed

• Cylinder Bed

• Feed Off the Arm

THREADING & Feeding System

Threading of the machine is very important Incorrect threading may cause: Skip stitch Thread breakage Uneven stitch formation

Feeding System The material handling components of a machine are often referred

to as Feed System..• Presser Foot• Needle• Feed Dog

ADJUSTING THE STITCH FORMATION

Thread Tension adjustment• It can be adjusted by adjusting the mount tension devices on

the machine • ( The tension should be as light

as possible )

1. Turn Tension Adjustment Discs

clockwise (A) to increase thread

tension.

2. Turn Tension Adjustment Discs

counterclockwise (B) to decrease

thread tension.

Improve Stitches Quality against the Diagram:

1. Shows the Correct Stitch

2. The stitches are the too

Tight. Reduce the tension

by turning the Tension

Dial in counter clock

wise direction.

3. The Stitches are too

loose. Increase the tension

by turning the Tension Dial in

Clock wise direction.

Loop formation and working of Looper :

Function of looper (intralooping):

1.Needle

2.Looper or hook

3.Thread

Chain Stitch Formation

The total operation of the 1 chain stitch is given into 8 steps.

Frame 1. Needle started

its stroke downward

And fabric moved.

Mechanism of Chain Stitch Machine24

Page 25: Chain Stitch Presentation

Frame 2. Needle start penetrating

in the fabric and at the

same time looping hook

starting to release the

previous stitch thread.

Comparison between Chain Stitch & lock Stitch:

• Chain stitch has more elasticity then lock stitch.• Chain stitch is thicker than lockstitch. • Chain stitch can easily be ripped then lock stitch.• Particular care is required in chain stitch to prevent

runback from the last stitch then lock stitch.• Chain stitch is made with looper instead Bobbin.• In Chain Stitch Thread consumption is more then

Lock Stitch.

There are 6 Main classes of Stitch….

• Class 100 - Single Threads Chain Stitch• Class 200 - Hand Stitch• Class 300 - Lock Stitch• Class 400 - Multi-thread Chain Stitch• Class 500 - Over-edge Chain Stitch• Class 600 - Covering Chains Stitch

Stitch Classes

34

Page 35: Chain Stitch Presentation

• Single thread Chain stitch, has a needle thread, and a blind looper.

• Has good extension, but unravels easily.

Page 36: Chain Stitch Presentation

Class 400: Multi Thread Chain Stitch (formed with a single looper)

• Two thread chain stitch - one needle thread and one looper thread.

• The needle & under threads cross over on the underside of the fabric

Class 500 : Over-edge Chain Stitch:

• This type of stitch is made with one needle thread and two looper threads.

• Has excellent extension and does not unravel easily.

Class 600 - Covering Chains Stitch:

• Top and Bottom cover seam stitch, has 2 needle, 1 looper and 1 spreader thread.

• Has excellent extension, when a small stitch is used excellent seam cover is achieved

Sewing Precautions:

• A chain stitch machine needs care for its smooth running.

• It should be cleaned and oiled regularly to ensure satisfactory sewing and long life.

• Use a small dry brush or old toothbrush and soft cloth to remove dust.

• When not in use, your machine should be covered with Machine Cover.

Mechanism of Chain Stitch Machine41

Page 42: Chain Stitch Presentation

• If the machine is used everyday, oil it once a week.• Keep hands away from the needle when you turn

the power switch on, or while the machine is operating.

• Never leave the machine running and unattended.
