CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE NovEMbER 2012

I am pleased to inform that we held a very success-ful FOAMS®2012 Conference in Barcelona, Spain in September. This is the first time the TPM&F Division has held the Conference and Foams Tutorial outside North America. We surpassed our attendance target due to an excellent techni-cal program and venue chosen for the conference. This success would not be possible without the relentless hard work of Prof. Miguel Angel Rodri-

guez-Perez, Conference Chairman. My sincere and heart felt thanks to Prof. Rodriguez-Perez and to the entire organizing committee.

The FOAMS Tutorial organized by Dr. Chul Park was well received. I would like to thank Dr. Park and his team for the job well done. The TPM&F Division is very grateful to all the sponsors and exhibitors at FOAMS®2012. Their support allows us to keep the registration cost down and support student activities. I would like to thank Theresa Healy, Communication Chair, for her support in coordinating in this effort.

Dr. Neil Witten organized the poster session at FOAMS®2012. Several students participated in the event and the winner of the best poster re-ceived a cash award of $250. Starting this year, our Division has started to offer two scholarships at the FOAMS® conference. Two scholarships were given out by Prof. Hani Naguib, Education Chair, at the Confer-ence. Dale Grove, Best Paper Chair, helped with identifying the best paper at the conference. The winner of the best paper is Dr. Stephane Costeux with The Dow Chemical Company. The title of his paper is “Nanocellular Foams from Acrylic Polymers: Experiments and Modeling.”

Dr. Klaus Hahn with BASF Corp. received Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) during the Foams Conference from Prof. Vipin Kumar, OAA Chair. Dr. Hahn gave an excellent plenary speech that became memorable with all the attendees.

WebsiteIf you have not done so already, please visit our new website at www.spetpmf.com

A few things I would like to keep updated for our website are:

- EDUCATION TAB: We would like to include the upcom-ing webinar series and information/updates regarding any-thing related to education for our Division. I will get this in-formation from Hani as soon as it becomes available.

-CONFERENCES: Once the FOAMS conference is over, I will update this area and promote the Polyolefins Conference in February.

-TOOLS: We are hoping to have the editorial tools to update the website by October so we can make the necessary changes ourselves to keep the website refreshed and updated with the latest information to our members.

-LINKED IN SITE: We have an SPE TPM&F site. As of 9/10/12, we have 364 members and growing. Please feel

to post any technical questions or discussions related to ther-moplastic materials and/or foams. These discussions help bring ideas and solutions to users. We can use this site to pro-mote our conferences as well as provide a resource for those people looking for advice in these technical areas.

-MEDIA: Please send me your photos from the FOAMS® conference so I can have them uploaded to the site. Any press releases, editorial articles, and other news should also be sent to me so we can get this into the site as well.

1. The TPMF Divi-sion education pro-gram is supporting student activities during ANTEC® 2012 which includes platinum sponsor-ship for the student receptions.

2. The TPMF Division has sponsored stu-dent scholarships (two students at PO2012).

3. Suggested plan for FOAMS® 2012: TPMF to support two student scholarships during FOAMS® 2012.

4. Suggested plan for new Webinar series: the Division is interested in organizing some specialized webinar series in state of the art areas in the plastics field, we would like to have volunteers from the board members and industry for conducting webinar se-ries in 2012 in the area of sustainability, bio based thermoplastics.

5. Suggested plan for more educational activities:

i) providing schools with some educational plastics videos and samples ii) starting a youth outreach program for high school students during our board Topcon conferences; iii) provide travel scholarship to university students to attend our Topcon conferences.

TPM&F vol. 1 2012/20135

At the last Council meeting, the Operational Planning Committee (OPC) presented the idea of establishing one set of standardized requirements for an SPE group to maintain active group status and attain rebate eligibility. For the last 4 months the OPC has been developing those requirements.  After much thought and deliberation, we have developed a matrix to detail the results. One important guiding principle was to simplify both the active group requirements and the rebate requirements.   The committee also had a greater ex-pectation for groups to act for the benefit of their members.  Our proposal raises minimum expectations for SPE affiliated groups to those roughly equivalent to the current rebate eligibility requirements.  However, we are recommending other changes; these are high-

lighted in yellow on the matrix spreadsheet. In addition, some cells have notes (put your cursor on the small red arrow in the right corner of a cell) which are included to indicate the current group requirements.

Please take note of these proposed changes: 1)  We have suggested reducing the number of officers for a Section or Division from six to four (Chair or Presi-dent, Secretary, Treasury, Membership Chair), and no one person can hold more than one of these positions per leadership year.

2) Today basic membership dues for regular members (i.e. excluding students) to belong to the Society include the cost of joining the Society and the cost (the group membership fee) of joining two (2) additional affiliate groups. We suggest that it be made explicit in the by-laws and/or policies that differential dues rates to join the Society for different parts of the world are allowed.   Procedures must be put in place to restrict membership and/or benefits so that everyone does not join the Society through the cheapest region in the world.

3) We propose a flat group membership fee of $15.00 be established to join any Section or Division regardless of which region of the world the group is organized and/or where the member resides. Sections organized in regions where differential dues are permitted may be allowed to have lower membership fees. If the fee is allocated ac-cording to our proposal, $14.00 per member would pass through to the group ($0.50 will go to a fund for start-up groups, and $0.50 to a fund for struggling groups).   In the existing rebate system, Sections receive $13.33/member on average and Divisions $4.52/member on average.  In addition, the tiered system (the first member is worth more in rebates than the last) will disappear.   This change would increase the total membership fee by $10 because each membership currently includes membership in two groups.

4) Rebates would become a group membership fee that passes directly through to your group on a quarterly basis.  In other words, at the end of each quarter the amount of money coming to your group from Headquarters is based on the number of members that joined or renewed with your group during that quarter.

5) We have suggested that SIGs be recognized in the by-laws as permanent groups rather than temporary groups.   There are a number of small requirements for SIGS that would change as a consequence of this recognition of permanence.

6) Each Section/Division/SIG must communicate with its membership at least twice a year electronically or other-wise, hold Officer meetings at least twice a year and publish minutes from the meeting, and hold and/or contribute to a minimum of one meeting/technical program/networking opportunity per year.

7)   For Sections or Divisions with less than 100 members, attendance at Council becomes optional.  Approximately half of the total number of Sections/Divisions have less than 100 members (mostly Sections).   Presumably, this change would also require a change in the by-laws and/or policies regarding the definition of quorum.

8)  For a Section/Division to remain active, the minimum group size is 30.  For SIGs, the number is 10.  The OPC believes that 30 is the minimum number of members required to support the proposed level of group activity.

9) Although this is not a change, a 2-year period is required to move a group from active to inactive status.  Just to be clear, we do not propose changing the mechanism for deactivation, only the criteria.

Respectfully submitted, Ashutosh H. Sharma

foAMS® 2012 REPoRtBy Miguel Angel Rodríguez -Pérez

The FOAMS®2012 conference took place in Hotel Porta Fira in Barcelona, Spain, from September 10th to Septem-ber 13th, 2012.

The FOAMS®2012 Tutorial on September 10 and 11 was chaired by Prof. Chul Park. The instructors were Chul Park, S.T. Lee and Hani Naguib. Attendance was 27, most of them coming from European companies.

The TopCon FOAMS®2012 conference was organized on September 12 and 13th. The total number of attendees was 131, 70% coming from Europe, 27% from America and 3% from Asia. The number of papers presented was 40, including 1 plenary talk. The figures regarding the num-ber of papers per area and per institution are included in the following tables for the last three years. The number of papers increased significantly in 2012 and also the num-ber of papers presented from Europe. It is also interesting to point out that the participation from industry has been maintained in the last three years.

The plenary talk, was given by Dr. Hahn from BASF, he also received the OOA from our Division. The speech given by Dr. Hahn was excellent.

The quality of the papers was in general high and well received from the attendees. The best paper winner was Stephane Costeux from Dow Chemical for his work on nanocellular foams.

Ten students participated in the poster session of this year. This number also increased over previous years. The poster award winner was Samuel Pardo Alonso from CellMat Lab of the University of Valladolid (Spain).

The conference was sponsored by 12 companies with a total income of $17,000 . The list of sponsors are:

Gold: BASF, HONEYWELL, TOTAL, SULZER

Exhibitors: ABN, CELLMAT, KENRICH, TOLSA, QUANTACHROME and GAMMA MECCANICA

Coffee Break: REPSOL, DOW.

An exhibitors area was organized where most of the above mentioned companies showed their products.

For the first time, the TPM&F Division offered scholarships during the Foams Conference. Two students from the EU region were selected and awarded the scholarship.

A positive cash balance of about $20,000 is anticipated from FOAMS®2012.

tREASuRER’S REPoRt

September 11, 2012Financial Summary:1) Ending FY11-12 Division balance is $138,502.67, down by $11,267.85 from the previous year end balance of $149,770.52. a) The loss was a smaller loss than budgeted for, largely due to the fact that we d i d under spend some categories and did not spend anything against the webinar or the Outstanding Achievement Award budget. Of the $11,267.85 loss, $10,034.30 were expenses for FOAMS® 2012 that we will be reimbursed for.2) The FY12-13 proposed budget is shown below. We will vote on this budget at our Board meeting this week.

3) Our investment account managed by Constitutional Advisory Group opened on May 4, 2012. 4) Per my vision for the treasury as shared on March 29, I would like to supplement our actively managed investment account with some CDs. I plan to begin purchasing some CDs in the coming months.

Investment Account Update: Between May 4 and June 30, the account value dropped 0.9% from $115,000 to $114,013.53. As of September 7, the investment account value is $118,213.51.

REVISION OF TPM&F BY-LAWS — RAY SHUTERay shared the revised by-laws for the TPM&F Division. The board members should review and send their input to Ray. Currently, we have a full board and one in the waiting.

COUNCILOR CHAIR REPORT — ASHU SHARMAAt the last Council meeting, the Operational Planning Committee (OPC) presented the idea of establishing one set of standardized requirements for an SPE group to maintain active group status and attain rebate eligibility. Our proposal raises minimum expectations for SPE affili-ated groups to those roughly equivalent to the current rebate eligibility requirements.  Please take note of these proposed changes: 1)     We have suggested reducing the number of officers for a Section or Division from six to four (Chair or President, Sec-retary, Treasury, Membership Chair), and no one person can hold more than one of these positions per leadership year.2)      Today basic membership dues for regular members (i.e. excluding students) to belong to the Society include the cost of joining the Society and the cost (the group membership fee) of joining two (2) additional affiliate groups. We sug-gest that it be made explicit in the by-laws and/or policies that differential dues rates to join the Society for different parts of the world are allowed.   Procedures must be put in place to restrict membership and/or benefits so that every-one does not join the Society through the cheapest region in the world. 3)    We propose a flat group membership fee of $15.00 be es-tablished to join any Section or Division regardless of which region of the world the group is organized and/or where the member resides. Sections organized in regions where dif-ferential dues are permitted may be allowed to have lower membership fees.  If the fee is allocated according to our proposal, $14.00 per member would pass through to the group ($0.50 will go to a fund for start-up groups, and $0.50 to a fund for struggling groups).   In the existing rebate sys-tem, Sections receive $13.33/member on average and Di-visions $4.52/member on average. In addition, the tiered system (the first member is worth more in rebates than the last) will disappear.  This change would increase the total membership fee by $10 because each membership currently includes membership in two groups.4)   Rebates would become a group membership fee that passes directly through to your group on a quarterly basis.  In other words, at the end of each quarter the amount of money coming to your group from Headquarters is based

MEEtING MINutES - CoNtINuEd

on the number of members that joined or renewed with your group during that quarter.5)   We have suggested that SIGs be recognized in the by-laws as permanent groups rather than temporary groups.   There are a number of small requirements for SIGS that would change as a consequence of this recognition of permanence.6)   Each Section/Division/SIG must communicate with its membership at least twice a year electronically or other-wise, hold Officer meetings at least twice a year and publish minutes from the meeting, and hold and/or contribute to a minimum of one meeting/technical program/networking opportunity per year.7)   For Sections or Divisions with less than 100 members, attendance at Council becomes optional.    Approximately half of the total number of Sections/Divisions has less than 100 members currently (mostly Sections).   Presumably, this change would also require a change in the by-laws and/or policies regarding the definition of quorum.8)   For a Section/Division to remain active, the minimum group size is 30.  For SIGs, the number is 10.  The OPC be-lieves that 30 is the minimum number of members required to support the proposed level of group activity.9)    Although this is not a change, a 2 year period is required to move a group from active to inactive status.  Just to be clear, we do not propose changing the mechanism for deac-tivation, only the criteria.

MEMBERSHIP CHAIR REPORT-AJIT RANADE TPM&F division active members as of 6/22/12: 896We added 30 members since June of 2012. I have submitted official request to SPE to extract names and contact infor-mation of all the members we had over last 2 years. I will be reviewing the list and compare with our current members. The goal is to contact the members we have lost and bring them back to SPE.

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES REPORT-MASAHIRO OHSHIMA & NEIL WITTENProf, Ohshima recommended having an SPE in China for the future. More discussion needs to be made on this topic as we need to have an established SPE chapter in China. In December, there will be a mini-ANTEC® in India. We have the FOAMS® 2012 in Barcelona for the first time.

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES REPORT — MASAHIRO OHSHIMA & NEIL WITTENThere will be a BOD meeting on June 22 to accommodate overseas members for a short meeting for their board input.

Next Board Meeting on Monday, February 25, 2013 in Houston, TX. Meeting adjourned at 2:20pm.
