CHAIRMAN'S ADDRESS

The old proverb says “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”.Well this is certainly true at Killorglin’s unique Fair and Festival,Puck Fair.Inthese hard financial times of doom and gloom,it is fashionable to complainand be prepared to sit back and criticise, but not in the Puck’s Kingdom ofKerry. Our organising committee were faced with a considerable decreasein sponsorship, which threatened the quality of the type of Festival andfun that is synonomous with Puck,so the local businesses were asked toreview their commitment to Puck and help fund the huge costs involved.

The Killorglin businesses and community responded with typical Kerrygenerosity and we are extremely grateful to each and every person whosedonations and sponsorship guarantee the survival of our unique event. My thanks are due to all involved in presenting King Puck 2009 to hiscitizens. Preparations began last August (immediately after Puck 2008)and the amount of time, effort and dedication, which is given voluntarilyeach year,is a credit to all concerned. Without your efforts, and thesupport of your families and the people of Killorglin,Puck Fair would nowbe part of History

Long may it survive.Ta suil agam go mbainfidh gach duine sult agus sonas as Aonach an Phuic2009 agus go mbeirimid to leir beo an tam seo aris.

Declan Mangan,Chairman.

JOHNNY PATTERSONWorld Premiere. A new musical dedicated to Johnny Patterson, Ireland’ssinging clown. Johnny Patterson was born in Feakle, Co.Clare in 1840 and wastragically killed on stage in Tralee in 1889. He was a famed song writer(including such songs as Good bye Johnny Dear, The Stone outside DanMurphy’s door, The Dingle Puck Goat) and was a renowned performer in theMusic Halls of New York. Local historian,Pa Houlihan, asked Declan Mangan towrite something about Johnny. Declan wrote a script for a Musical, Mick Jones(an English musical genius ,living locally) wrote 9 new songs and a new musicaltribute to Johnny Patterson became a reality.

The World Premiere was held in the CYMS Hall on Aug.3rd-6th,and Johnnyhimself (played by Muiris Crowley) will be performing at the crowningceremony of King Puck 2009. A CD of the songs from the show is available in the Puck Shop.

Seamus wants it so much he can smell it. All Sean can smell is the inside of hiscontortion ring. Pop, dance and entertainment turned into circus, acrobatics andcomedy. With their new show can Seamus and Sean take Ireland and the worldof B-list celebrity by storm? Can they survive their artistic differences? Willspandex uni-tards ever be in fashion? This is in-your-face street entertainment.

The year in Killorglin is marked byPuck Fair, everything is eitherbefore Puck or after Puck andevents are noted by "since lastPuck". Sadly, since last Puck, wehave lost the owners of threegreat local bars which weresynonymous with Puck.

Con Leen owned the small bar inUpper Bridge St.which had thelast remaining "snug" in Town andwas a popular rendezvous foremigrants who gathered there tocontinue old friendships, and takeup the conversations that wereleft unfinished since the previousPuck.A unique step back to thePucks of days of yore.

Brendan Moriarty, who died ayoung man,had completelymodernised the Goat Inn,Langford St. and had built a nightclub,Ibex (the Latin name for

goat), which was a key meetingplace for the younger generation.Brendan, as well as being a greatfinancial supporter of the Fair, fora while sat in on committeemeetings, where his advice wasalways valued.

The tragic fire in O'Shea's Pub,Langford St. in June, sadly tookthe lives of Rhetta and AnnO'Shea. These two sisters hadcontinued to run the family pubwhich was such an integral partof the social life of Langford St.,and particularly on ScatteringNight was the "home from home"for many present and ex-citizensof Killorglin, and for them Puckwould not be complete without a "final "drink and singsong inO'Sheas.

May Rhetta, Ann, Brendan andCon rest in peace.
