Dear MembersDear MembersDear MembersDear Members
Although it may be cold and wet for the next couple of months we have some wonderful events
coming up which will drive away the Winter blues.
First is the Winter Workshop on Saturday 25 August . This is a fund raiser for the Clay Museum. We
have a fantastic line up of presenters ; Professor Ian Calder from Natal, David Walters, Ingrid Bolton
and Theo Vorster. Information about the presenters and workshops as well as the booking form
appear in this newsletter.
Second is a workshop presented by American/French potter Daphne Corregan on Saturday
15 September. Daphne has been invited to South Africa to be the award judge for the National
Exhibition. Her work is hand-built and shows a strong drawing and sculptural background. This is a
once in a life time opportunity to see this widely respected artist at work. Book early. Booking forms
are included in this newsletter.
Third is the Franschhoek Art in Clay Festival, now in its second year. The festival starts on the
27th
October and ends on the 16th
November. Some of the major galleries in the town will be hosting
ceramics exhibitions and some of them will be offering French style food. The Festival coincides with
the Open Gardens weekend and other festivities. There is also the possibility of a potters market so
refer to our website for more details and the press.
Fourth is the November Potters Market on Saturday 17 November .
Fifth is our Regional Exhibition which opens on the 25 November and runs until 8 December.
November is not that far off so start making those wonderful pieces. Once again there will be a Juried
exhibition and a Members Invitational. Due to the great success of last years Invitational show we
have decided to continue with the WHITE theme for this year. Details and forms will appear in the
September newsletter.
Cape Town has been chosen as Design Capital of the World in 2014.
We are in the process of planning for a massive ceramics presence
during the year. We need volunteers to help with certain ceramic
projects. If you would like to be part of a dynamic team please
contact me on 021 671 6139
Please support our workshops and exhibitions; these are wonderful
opportunities to learn, discover and be re-invigorated as well as fo-
rums for meeting like minded people.

He graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BA in Graphic Art specializing in Printmaking.; silk-screening and etching. uses to make his colourful maiolica paintings on pots. In his slideshow, he will illustrate and
talk about the history of earthenware and tin-glazes in South Africa, with a focus on contemporary expressions in this ancient earthenware medium and also demonstrate and
discuss the practical uses of oxides and stains in maiolica painting.

Ditchburn for his BAFA and MAFA degrees. He has received several national and regional
awards for his ceramics, and actively shows his colourful pottery, drawings and paintings in
local and international exhibitions. In his continuing research he has authored many texts
about South African ceramics, especially about the intersecting cultural histories and aesthetics
of indigenous Zulu ceramics in KwaZulu-Natal, the Pottery Workshop at Rorke’s Drift Art and

William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley.
10th Anniversary Exhibition opens 31st July 2012.
‘Pottery is a central art,’ said Paul Gauguin, and he hadn’t encountered South Afri-
can ceramics! Nowhere else can the evolution of fired clay from useful ‘pot’ to
iconic ‘art pieces’ be seen more clearly.
The Zulu ukhamba, for example, has transformed over two thousand years from
utility beer pot to its current culturally significant, beautifully hand built and rounded
smoke-fired form. And these pots, which are made only by women, hold importance
far beyond their obvious use as beer vessels, since they are a medium for dialogue
with the ancestors.
There are many examples of art in clay, and hundreds of pots made by contemporary
ceramic artists can be seen on this exhibition, transforming the most basic of materi-
als into varied and interesting objects. This passion for creativity comes clearly from
the heart, using skill and elemental materials like clay, water and fire. And many of
these objects are art for everyday use – made with skill and love to add texture, qual-
ity and meaning to simple everyday pleasures like drinking tea or eating off a hand-
crafted plate.
South Africans are earthy people and our clay artists are without dispute some of the
most creative and diverse in the world. More than thirty potters from all over the
country have been invited to take part in this exhibition, and will be celebrating the
opening of the very first purpose-built ceramics display in a National Art Gallery, the
Bonnie Ntshalintshali Ceramics Wing.

The CSA Western Cape Office is relocating back to the Clay Museum in Durbanville. The move will take place in July
and our telephone and computer may not be operational for a while. For any queries or bookings for the Winter
Workshop or Daphne Corregan workshop please call Ralph Johnson on 021 6716139
between 9h00 and 12h00 Monday to Friday or e-mail to [email protected] until further notice
CSA OFFICE RELOCATING
Daphne Corregan is an American born ceramist now living in France. She has
been invited to be the award judge at this year’s National Exhibition which
opens in Pretoria on the 7 October 2012. Whilst in South Africa Daphne will
present workshops in all the major centers. Her Cape Town Workshop will be
on Saturday September 15.
Daphne is an accomplished ceramic artist, painter, sculptor and draughts-
woman. She has traveled widely from West Africa to China and these experi-
ences inform her work.
“Corregan works more on the representation of the object than on the object
itself. She wants to demonstrate that a pot for example, by removing it from
its daily context may be just as important as a sculpture or painting. She will
flatten it, exaggerate its size or even highlight only one of its details. She uses
diverse materials such as clay, metal, glass or bronze. She works in series and
in what we might classify into three families: destructured pots; geometric
volumes; and sculpture/objects, often anthropomorphic.”( Francoise de
L’Epine in Ceramics Today )
Book immediately to secure your seat
for this once in a lifetime opportunity to meet Daphne and revel in her creativity.
