In the address by the Chief Guest on theissue of “Women in Technology: Some GenderIssues & IEEE”, the importance of Women inEngineering was conveyed. “The number ofwomen in IEEE is just 8%. There must be an equalrepresentation. They have creative thinking andintuition which is not on the same lines as manypeople but much more. They have lot of patienceand are needed in a group because they bringout a different viewpoint. Women should thinkthat nothing is impossible and should not use thetag ‘I am a woman’ as an excuse. IEEE has close to617 branches in the Asia Pacific region out of which410 are from India. IEEE gives a very valuablenetwork which will make a person’s activitiesvisible”, said Prof. Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas.

The potential and capabilities of womenin various fields, the benefits of being an IEEE

member and its importance were discussed.“Networking is the most essential factor in anyfield” was the message given.

The double STAR (Student Teacher andResearch Engineer/Scientist) was emphasizedupon, which actually is the collaboration of theIEEE STAR with the IEEE – WIE VIT AffinityGroup STAR.

Both male and female studentsparticipated in large number. This was followedby the introduction to the office bearers. The purpose of the competition is topromote excellence in the design of a systemby a team of students. The IEEE ComputerSociety has constructed a realistic and non-trivial task that requires a group of studentsto solve a real-world problem.

Judging will be carried out according tothe following criteria:o Originality of the architecture designedo Functionality, quality, and versatility of

the simulatoro The use of software engineering in the

design of the simulatorThe simulator must be able to run on

typical PCs under Windows. We appreciatethat some may find this restriction restrictive. However, not all judges, evaluators, and userswill have alternative operating systems ontheir home computers.

Each team must certify that their reportsand software are their own work and havenot been derived (with or withoutpermission) from other sources.
