3 28 CHALK ZONES IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF SHOREHAM, BRIGHTON AND NEWHAVEN, SUSSEX.* By CHRISTOPHER T. A. GASTER, F.G .S. THIS paper is a further contribution of my work on the zones of the chalk in Sussex. My previous paper dealt with the chalk of the Worthing District [1924 (3) p. 89, et seq.] ; th e present one, which continues eastward of that district, embraces the area between Shoreham and Seaford. The southern portion is coastal, extending east and west for about 15 miles and is chiefly of an urban character. It includes the towns of Brigh- ton, Hove, Shoreham and Newhaven. Owing to a westerly inward bend of the coast the inland extension is about z t- miles at Shoreham, widen ing to 6 miles at Bishopstone, west of Seaford. The western boundary is drained by the River Adur and the eastern by the River Ouse. The part of the South Downs which forms the cliff at Brighton and eastwards to Newhaven recedes from the coast west of Brighton and con- tinues inland. The Mount Caburn syncline is present in the north of Brighton and eastwards, also the anticline of Kingst on near Lewes, which runs approximately parallel with the last fold [1924 (2) pp. 6, 7J. Brydone has recorded a series of folds tran sverse to the cliff-line from Black Rock, Brighton, to Seaford [1914 p. 361J. These are continued westwards by an anti- cline which may be known as the Brighton anticline, of which East Brighton is. the axis. It is the 'westerly pitch of thi s fold that accounts for the presence of the higher zones in West Brighton (which may be seen in the railway sections between Brighton Station and Holland Road Halt) and finally terminat es the outcrop of chalk on the coast in East Hove. The inliers of Cold Dean, Lower Bevend ean and Balsdean recorded by the Survey [1924 (2) p. 40J are pres ent in the area. The extension of the zone of Offaster pilula to include the Hagenowia horizon [1924 (3) p. 93] is fully maintained. Thi s zone constitutes the greater portion of the cliff between Brighton and Newhaven and occurs in several good inland sections. As the lower two-thirds of the H agenowia horizon are well repre- sented, an opportunity was afforded to obtain evidence in this portion of the horizon which was not available in th e Worthing area. As a result it was found that an additional Echinocorys belt is present in which large forms dominate. This belt is now added to the Table recorded in the Worthing paper [1924 (3) p. 95J, and a revision is published below. Four specimens of Sacco coma cretacea (Bather) have been found in the Offaster pilula Zone. These were obtained from the soft chalk in the tests of Echinocorys. This fossil still remains a special feature of the Actinocamax quadratus Zone. • Weald Research Report NO. 9, read July 3th, 19'9.

SUSSEX.*B y CHRISTOPHER T. A. GASTER, F.G .S.

THIS paper is a further contribution of my work on the zonesof the chalk in Sussex. My previous paper dealt with the

chalk of the Worthing District [1924 (3) p. 89, et seq .] ; th epresent one, which continues eastward of that district, embracesthe area between Shoreham and Seaford. The southernportion is coastal, extending east and west for about 15 miles andis chiefly of an urban character. It includes the towns of Brighton, Hove, Shoreham and Newhaven. Owing to a westerlyinward bend of the coast the inland extension is about zt- milesat Shoreham, widen ing to 6 miles at Bishopstone, west ofSeaford. The western boundary is drained by the River Adurand the eastern by the River Ouse. The part of the SouthDowns which forms the cliff at Brighton and eastwards toNewhaven recedes from the coast west of Brighton and cont inues inland. The Mount Caburn syncline is pr esent in thenorth of Brighton and eastwards, also the anticline of Kingstonnear Lewes, which runs approximately parallel with the lastfold [1924 (2) pp. 6, 7J. Brydone has recorded a series of foldstransverse to the cliff-line from Black Rock, Brighton, to Seaford[1914 p. 361J. These are continued westwards by an anticline which may be known as the Brighton anticline, of whichEast Brighton is. the axis. It is the 'westerly pitch of this foldthat accounts for the presence of the higher zones in WestBrighton (which may be seen in the railway sections betweenBrighton Station and Holland Road Halt) and finally terminatesthe outcrop of chalk on the coast in East Hove. The inliers ofCold Dean, Lower Bevendean and Balsdean recorded by th eSurvey [1924 (2) p. 40J are present in the area.

The extension of the zone of Offaster pilula to include theHagenowia horizon [1924 (3) p. 93] is fully maintained. Thiszone constitutes the greater portion of the cliff between Brightonand Newhaven and occurs in several good inland sections. Asthe lower two-thirds of the H agenowia horizon are well represented, an opportunity was afforded to obtain evidence inthis portion of the horizon which was not available in th eWorthing area. As a result it was found that an additionalEchinocorys belt is present in which large forms dominate. This belt is now added to the Table recorded in the Worthingpaper [1924 (3) p. 95J, and a revision is published below.

Four specimens of Saccocoma cretacea (Bather) have beenfound in the Offaster pilula Zone. These were obtained from thesoft chalk in the tests of Echinocorys. This fossil still remains aspecial feature of the Actinocamax quadratus Zone.

The Trochiliopora bed [1920 p. 526J has been found in theRailway section by the entrance to Kemp Town Tunnel belowElm Grove Elementary Schools, Brighton, and also in theroadside pit! mile N.W. of Old Erringham Farm, Old Shoreham. This bed has now been traced from Beachy Head to the Eastbank of the River Adur, and is a reliable guide to the lower portion of the M. coranguinum zone. It appears to be includedin the upper part of the yellow nodular chalk mentioned by Rowe[1900 p. 329J·

LIST OF CHALK PITS AND SECTIONS.The area included in the paper coincides with the following

six-inch sheets of the Ordnance Survey from which the description of the exposures recorded have been prepared:-

Sussex (East and West) Sheet LXV. N.W. N.E.Sussex (East) Sheet LXVI. N.W. N.E. S.W.

S.E.Sussex (East) Sheet LXVII. N.W. N.E. S.W.

S.E.Sussex (East) Sheet LXXVII. N.E.Sussex (East) Sheet LXXVIII N .W. N .E.Against each exposure a reference is given to the sheet on

which it is included. Each exposure is arranged under thehorizon in which it occurs, cross references being used wheremore than one zone is present.

The occurrence of Conulus albogalerus in the upper portionof the Micraster coranguinum zone is recorded against the sectionsfrom which it has been obtained.

The numbers of the pits and sections continue on fromthose given in my last paper [1924 (3)J, and are shown on Plate 27.

In the case of the cliff sections the numbers indicate theportion included on the quarter sheet or sheets against whichsuch numbers are attached.

Brydone states that his Bed 2, which is the uppErtwo feet of the Uintacrinus band, appears to be quite devoid ofcrinoid remains. At Withdean not only were two Uintacrinusplates obtained in the thick flint seam at the base of this 2 feet, but also a plate was found 6 inches below the top of the sub-zone,showing that this Bed was correctly assigned to the Uintacrinusband.

A small temporary section on private ground East side of VernonAvenue about 400 yards N.E. of site of Warren Farm Schools'Well, yielded Ostrea boucheroni, Coq. Thecidia Wetherelli, Morris(Large) and Pelmatopora marsupitum, Lang, indicating chalk notmore than about 15 feet above the base of the sub-zone. Similarchalk is present in the cliff due south at Roedean. The determination of the horizon of this temporary section agrees favourablywith the 460 feet of "Chalk-with-flints" assigned to the wellsection (1900 p. 117) and on signed plan of well exhibited in theBrighton Museum. The 418 feet quoted (1878 p. 116 and 1899p. 83) is the depth at which the first contractor finished.

Warren Farm Schools is in the Parish of Rottingdean andis situate about It miles N.E. of the Grand Stand of BrightonRacecourse and 11 miles from the coast and due north of RoedeanSchool. Some previous records have incorrectly placed theSchools Well in Telscombe Parish (1878 pp. 115-117 and 1899p. 83 and p. 119). This would explain a descrepancy pointedout in a note by Mr. H. J. Osborne White (1924 (2) p. 42). 66 N.E.

TABLE OF FOSSILS.It is not possible to continue the arrangement of tabulation

of the fossils as provided in the table for the Worthing District[1924 (3)J owing to the greater number of pits recorded. Theoccurrences of the fossils are indicated in two groups:-

(I) The zonal or characteristic species, by the letter Z,including those not confined to, but a special feature ofthe horizon.

(2) The remainder by an X.Additional notes will be found in column 16 of the Table. The lists for the zones of Ofjaster pilula and Actinocamax

quadratus should be compared' with those for the WorthingDistrict.

In the case of the Cribimorph Polyzoa the species markedwith an asterisk-*-indicate that the type specimens werecollected from the area. (See W. D. Lang, 1921 and 1922.)

In connection with the Cretaceous Asteroidea, attention isdrawn to the Table of Zonal Records by W. K. Spencer (1914pp. 168-169).
