CHAT KRAD: I have been having a problem my challenge, anybody good with conflict resolution

SIMUL: The tech department has a new manager, call him.

BRENDA L: Why is a new manager seem like it is always a him. I have a meeting with the Chief

in 5, can I please get a progress report?

DJ BYTE: Anybody for drinks after work?

KRAD: Hey man, you know we are not supposed to use chat for social business.

BRENDA L: You know I heard that the VP of Business development is going to change that.

Social Business is the way of the future, look at IBM.

ZACK D: Brenda, that is not the best example. IBM stock has been going down for 12 quarters.

I was brought in as the new VP, to clean up the mess that was created by Casey, the CSO. Casey

was the CEO’s brother and was to remain in the company no matter what. Casey wanted to

transform the company by creating a new vision. His Vision had a strong democratic tone, directions,

and values of the company. In the last 3 years major reorganizations have taken place at the

company. The major outcome of each of the changes was to dilute the leadership and create a

feeling of instability among the employees. Employees, were concerned and didn’t understand how

their roles related to stated goals of the company. The overall effect was drop in worker morale

and production. The vison was lost.

Casey micromanages some employees and ignores others. He wants to be seen as a hands-on

manager, but he delegates operational control of the company to others while he focuses on

external issues. At times he appears to be insensitive to employees’ concerns. He wants an

environment in which everyone can feel empowered, but he often fails to listen to what employees

are saying. He seldom engages in open, two-way communication. Now that the company is facing

a large debt and cash- flow crisis the CEO needs rapid damage control. Can you help me save the

company?

Last year I became director of Business Development. I suspect that the company’s future lies with Social Business. I need to build a convincing case for the top executives, and the only way I can do that is explore alternative opportunities for our company, hypothesize on the outcomes of each method and suggest the best with valid measures of success. Can you help me?

Steve has received conflicting feedback from two of his

employees on a client project. However, it is not the fist time

that Janice and Liz have been displaying negative behavior

towards each other. They keep knocking on his door or

sending him emails about each other, complaining and

whining. He has had it. He wants to fire both of them. What

Perception is not always reality and oftentimes we don’t

confront the most obvious situation before us because we let

other points of view distort what we believe to be true. The

most effective leaders have the self-awareness and wisdom to

confront and diffuse the tension. Conflict resolution is much like

any other form of adversity. You either act or you don’t. How

many times has your gut told you to take action when dealt with

adversity, but instead you waited until those around you took

the calculated risks that you were hesitant to take yourself? As a

result, conflict should be embraced and dealt with – not just to

resolve a possible problem or to detect an opportunity – but as

a moment to learn about your own leadership maturity as you

lead others through adverse circumstances. https://hbr.org/2004/01/what-makes-a-leader

PROBLEM 2

Kelly and two colleagues

submitted a report that

received favorable feedback

me, their manager. Kelly

speaks to me and says that she

ended up doing most of the

work on the report. I know that

the other two employees

worked equally hard on the

report. What would you say to

Kelly?

PROBLEM 2

Kelly and two colleagues submitted a report that

received favorable feedback me, their manager.

Kelly speaks to me and says that she ended up

doing most of the work on the report. I know that

the other two employees worked equally hard on

the report. What would you say to Kelly?

Tell her that you know that

her colleagues also

worked hard on the report

and that she should not try

to take credit for other

people’s work.

Thank Kelly for her work

on the report and say that

you are pleased with how

hard all three employees

worked on the project.

Give Kelly a difficult, solo,

project for her next

assignment so that she will

not have to compete with

anyone else for credit.

Say nothing because she

knows the reality of the

situation so what does it

matter if Kelly has an

inflated view of herself?

Select the appropriate option.

with Kelly.

BREAKING NEWS

Sezwell Brokerage firm is

allegedly making its employees

sick. Stress is sending dozens of

employees to the hospital.

A problem of stress related illnesses occurred in our New York

office. These illnesses were the result of changes in the

organization and increasing pressure to perform. As this caused

many problems for business managers, human resources (HR)

and increased the workload for other employees, I need to

develop a policy to reduce stress in the workplace, for our

company and to be shared publicly on our website. The CEO is

demanding changes to a number of existing policies as well

I am the general manager of division which is one of four located in

cities away from the main offices. Once a month, I hold a staff meeting

for all the key people in the division. I invite participation on each of

the agenda items because I believes in developing a team atmosphere

in the division. However, there are big differences in the degree and

kinds of participation between the technical and marketing people..

Most of the meetings are dominated by the sales and marketing

people. Not only do they do most of the talking, tell jokes and get

sidetracked from the agenda. The technical personnel just sit there but

occasionally roll their eyes and give off signals that they are frustrated.

I don’t know what to do; instead of cohesion, there is friction and

conflict, although it is not expressed openly. I am considering the

possibility of a demotion just so I do not have to deal with this. What

should I do?

What should I do?

1. Should I stop having the meetings?

2. Should I be much more directive by asking for participation by specific

people when I thinks it is needed on a particular agenda item?

3. Should I devote a meeting to describing what I want of the team and

what I sees happening, inviting everyone to talk about his or her

reaction to the meetings and discussing ways to try to become a team?

4. Should he seek out a consultant to help with the problem?

5. Should I request a demotion?
