• NAIRU approach of the European Union (Inflation targets are more important than unemployment targets)

• Financial crisis cut a lot of jobs (most important in the production and construction sector)

• Lack of serious successful governmental programs to support youth employment and job creation

• Lack of entrepreneurial mindset (starting to develop, slowly)

Several factors have led to the development of youth unemployment in Romania (political, sociological and economic)

There are several factors which led to the current situation of youth unemployment:

• Political instability -> lack of confidence from foreign investors who could otherwise create new ventures

• High levels of employee contributions paid by the companies (social security, health insurance, etc.)

• Vocational schools were removed from the curriculum

• Worker unions have lost a lot of bargaining power during the last years

• Examples of successful projects organized by student NGOs

Non-governmental organizations are a bridge between students and companies and they develop projects to improve career

perspectives of the students

How do NGOs improve the society?

• by offering the opportunity to practice the theoretical information received in school and university

• by introducing students into the business environment

• by getting students get more involved in the economy

• networking

• social entrepreneurship

• In order to develop such projects some considerable investments are needed, this being the most difficult aspect of implementing a project with a return to students

• Our idea is to create a system which will become mandatory for all Romanian students, a so-called NGO fee which would be paid at the beginning of each year by all students in order to receive their StudentID

• This way more and more students would be aware of the activity of student NGOs, would invest in their future and will make a considerable contribution to the development of the society

• This fee would be something like 5 Euros, the equivalent of a lunch, 4 beers, a movie ticket or one and ½ pack of cigarettes

The main problem is that in Romania these Non-governmental Organizations usually lack the funding

• A mentorship program not only would help students get in touch with their possible career path but also would get them closer to companies which will recruit them in a more efficient and practical way as soon as a job opportunity appears

A serious mentorship program could help shape careers and paths in life. It could be the missing key in workforce placement.

• The system implementation would consist of motivating some employees to volunteer

• Students being in the senior years of highschool would get in touch with companies which will help them choose a faculty and slowly build their future

• Faculty students will also benefit from the same program, but with more duties

• Time invested by our team:

– 20 hours/week/member

What would be the outcome?

• How many young people will you engage:

- We will choose for this around 100 students from the main NGO`s from each university in Romania to develop the program

• How many young unemployed people will you reach:

– Considering that there are approximately 300 000 students, out of which approximately 30 000 would be graduating, it means that these would be eligible to get employed if they took part of the program
