Innovation barriers

Environmental Management and Accounting

70% of planned organizational change initiatives fail (Pellettiere 2006)

minimization of disruptions to innovation is “key to

innovative success” (Hall and Martin 2005, p. 274)

“new” means: perceived as new by individuals or the

organization (e.g. Zain, Richardson and Adam 2002, Rogers 2003)

innovation can provoke resistance (Hadjimanolis 2003)

innovation barriers hamper, decelerate or even block

innovation (Mirow, Hölzle and Gemünden 2007, 2008)

Starting points of our study

chemistry is an established, capital intensive industry

exact cash flows are uncertain and hard to quantify

challenge for Green Chemistry:

reduction of inherent risk by reduction of hazard, but:

current regulation focuses on reductions in exposure

number of disciplines involved in Green Chemistry is high

and accordingly the “scientific” languages

“promotors by know-how” often not in a position of power

“promotors by power” need an attitude towards Green

Chemistry to support it strongly enough

Barriers are factors that may hamper, decelerate

or even block Green Chemistry.

If barriers are not relieved, the implementation

might fail and it might become a risk for the

company.

1. workshop at Harvard University

2. expert interviews:

first expert group: Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University

further expert groups:

VCI (the German chemical industry association)

GDCh (the German Chemical Society)

3. anonymous, online questionnaire for the American Chemical

Conclusion

Environmental Management and Accounting

Green Chemistry achieved good awareness

level within the community –

supply chain and users differ

strategies to overcome barriers should focus on

the adoption and diffusion phase

different actors on multiple levels have to be

involved to overcome barriers in Green Chemistry
