Challenges in Educationwith

Focus in Pakistan

Democracy v. Communism Two-Party SolutionPakistan gained its independence from India on August 15,1947

Pakistan

Challenges Deeply Rooted Ethnic Divisions Paranoia + Insecurity = Ethnic Divisions Independent Pakistan had no national identity

Result Two-Party System Virtually Impossible Creation of polarized political parties. Political parties function as leaders of their area/province. They provide public services to their area.

Destruction of School System Creation of Slaves Political parties creates schools in their areas as a meansto preach political ideologies to pupils. Pseudo parallelism with Holy Quran. Children grow up with loyalty to their province and become polarized in political thought.

Army of Supporters Creation of SlavesEach party is replenished with a new army of supporterswhen the party invests in education.

Poverty is a state of mind, Slavery is a state of being.

Factors Affecting Education PoliticsAccording to the Pakistan Education Task Force: Lack of political will to invest in the development of mass education. Government expenditure on education as a share of gross domestic product are estimated to be less than 1.5%. Approximately 1 in 10 of the worlds children not in primary school live in Pakistan.

Factors Affecting Education Politics High inflation and declining economy pushed rural communities to engage their children in child-labor instead of sending them to schools.

30% Pakistanis have received less than two years education.

Factors Affecting Education Educational System Challenges

Factors Affecting Education Educational System ChallengesIn 2007, the total number of school-aged-children (5-19 years of age) in Pakistan was approximately 60 million: Only 37 million are enrolled in school:- 21 million in public schools.

- 12 million in private schools.- 1.6 million in Mosque and Madrasas schools.

Factors Affecting Education Educational System Challenges

Factors Affecting Education Educational System ChallengesThe educational system of Pakistan is based on unequal lines: Medium of education is different in both, public and private sectors. This creates a sort of disparity among people, dividing them into two segments.

One division is on the basis of English medium language while the other is Urdu medium language.

Factors Affecting Education Educational System Challenges

Factors Affecting Education Educational System ChallengesPoor facilities also contribute to Pakistans education crisis: Only 36% of public schools are in satisfactory condition, with many schools lacking basic facilities.

Approximately two-thirds of Pakistans schools have adequate water and sanitation facilities. Only 39% have electricity.

Blackboards, textbooks, and desks are often in short supply.

The Task Force makes a strong case for education reform and officially acknowledging the countrys crisis is a positive sign.

Factors Affecting Education Poverty and Illiteracy

Factors Affecting Education Poverty and Illiteracy Rates in PakistanAre among the highest in the region: More than one-third of the population lives on less than $1.25 per day.

Approximately 90 million people in Pakistan are illiterate.

Factors Affecting Education Poverty and Illiteracy

Factors Affecting Education Poverty and IlliteracyLack of trained workforce in government schools: Teachers and staff recruitment is based on political approaches without following formal hiring process. People who do not get job in any other sector try their luck in educational system.

They are not professionally trained teachers so they are unable to train a nation.

Factors Affecting Education Poverty and IlliteracyThe worst effected are girls because parents stop them from going to school and hand over trivial jobs to earn few bucks at home.

Factors Affecting Education Natural Disasters

Factors Affecting Education Natural Disasters Natural and man-made disasters diverted the attention and investment of stakeholders. Change of priorities of donors and stakeholders due to political will and interests. Lack of investment from the business community due to limited budget and economic crunch.

Factors Affecting Education Ideological ClaimsPakistans educational system is a battleground for competing political and ideological claims Pakistans failing education system potentially has opened the doors for the radicalization of many young people who lack the skills necessary to participate in Pakistans modern economy. Religious aspects are more dominated and children enrollment has become more critical.
