Dear Chamber Members, It is difficult for me to believe that my year as President has already come to an end. It is time to look back over the past year and review some of what we have achieved together. I want to thank the Board of Directors for their support and involvement in Chamber activities. I particularly want to thank the staff of the Chamber of Commerce; Kara, Jamie, Sara, Cheryl, Bob and the Executive Director of the Chamber,Todd Banks. Our membership has continued to grow this past year. This membership growth was accomplished during an economic cycle that saw many other chambers across Canada remain static or realize a decrease in membership. One of the many highlights of the year was being invited to the Prime Minister’s office to discuss the energy paper that our Chamber and membership contributed to in a significant way with input and sponsorship. Another great achievement occurred this past May when our Chamber was recognized by the Alberta Chamber of Commerce as the “2010 Chamber of the Year”. Congratulations to our entire membership as your support, belief and participation helped us acquire this great achievement. The backbone of the Chamber is the tremendous group of volunteers that work countless hours behind the scenes to make Chamber events a success. The participation of the membership adds immensely to the local community. Thank you for all of your hard work. The most recent example of volunteer commitment and outstanding work by the Chamber staff was the Canada Day parade. So frequently, we have been lucky enough to have great weather for the event and this year was no exception. When you take a look at all of the children involved in the parade and on the sidewalks watching it all go by, it really seems worth it. A huge thank you goes out to the Sherwood Park Mall for allowing us to use their parking lot for organization of the participants! Congratulations to those who won in their categories. On October 22, we celebrated business here in Strathcona County. It was my distinct pleasure to recognize Stewart, Weir & Co. Ltd. as “Business of the Year” and Broadmoor Stationers & Copy Center Ltd. with the “Long Term Service” award. Please read further into this newsletter to see all the recipients of the 2010 Business Awards. Our largest event of the year is the Great Canadian Trade Fair and Sale. This year was another huge success with 315 exhibitor booths and 16,075 visitors to see what our business community had to offer for goods and services in the community. The free community stage was once again very well attended and there were several great performances/events such as the Fashion Show, Talent Contest and the Baby Crawl. Thank you to the Mayor and Council and all of the County staff for all that they do to support the Chamber, encourage local businesses, and promote this community. It was our privilege to have such an extensive and impressive list of candidates for this year’s Board elections. We have a strong Board for the coming year, and we hope those who ran and were not elected will try again, as we had more candidates than we had spots to fill. It has been a tremendous opportunity and a great privilege to lead the Chamber in the past year. In closing, I would like to say thank you to the membership for your belief and support for myself and the Board over the past year. I know Peter Court and his Board will do a great job representing you, the membership over the next year. Please continue to read through this “Year in a Glance” paper for more of the great programs, services and events that your Chamber provides for its membership and this great community!
