Cambridge International Celebrates Its
Greatest Resource – Our People
As Cambridge International embarks on a new century during its 101st year in operation, the
company continues its tradition of honoring long-time employees at the Annual Service
Awards Banquet. Held this year on January 29, 2012 in an intimate setting overlooking
Maryland’s Eastern Shore waters at the Yacht Club in Cambridge, the company celebrated 49
outstanding employees, whose loyalty and service has withstood the test of time, reaching five,
ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five and thirty year benchmarks. Additionally, thirty-one of our
team members have been with Cambridge International for twenty-five years or more and are
honored at the banquet every year.

the company is recognized as a pioneer in engineering and manufacturing, supporting a diverse

Recently a comment was
overheard likening a person’s
attitude as “if a dog was on a
bone”. I sort of feel that way
toward repairing the fountain –
something long overdue. In
addition to honoring those
making the ultimate sacrifice
the fountain has been a great
source of enjoyment for many
a child growing up around
Cambridge. If that is not
enough, the fountain has be-
come an icon for our water-
front with its beauty, especial-
ly in the evening when lit,
encouraging folks to make that
right turn onto Maryland Ave.
With proceeds from the
Chamber’s Annual Meeting
and Rotary’s Oyster Roast
progress has been made in
raising the funds needed to
turn the fountain on Memorial
Day. Our push is to see the
additional repairs done along
with some beautification of
Long Wharf. We view the foun-
tain repair and the Choptank
River Light House Project as
Economic Development invest-
ments in our community. These
two projects will attract visitors
to our community. They make a
statement as to the vitality of
this beautiful waterfront town.
If you have not already done
so, there still is time to make
your tax deductible contribu-
tion. Contact us and we will
gladly help you do so.
On Friday May 4th the 12th
Chick-fil-A Leadercast will
simulcast live from Atlanta to
Chesapeake College. A top
rated leadership event featuring
10 internationally renowned
speakers including John Max-
well, Tim Tebow and Soledad
O’Brien. The day will begin with
breakfast at registration. The pro-
gram beginning at 9 am carries
through until 4:30. Thanks to an
arrangement with Talbot Cham-
ber we are able to offer this out-
standing event for only $99 for
Chamber members and $119 for
non-members. Call the Dorches-
ter Chamber to reserve your seat.
Eight DCPS teachers are
participating in this year’s Ameri-
cans for the Competitive Enter-
prise System (ACES) Program.
The program will run for 10
weeks with visits to local busi-
nesses and wrapping up with the
teachers presenting their project
on May 15th wrap up session. The
next ACES program is being tar-
geted for the fall of 2012. If you
are interested in your company
participating call the Chamber
office.

Celebrate Dorchester 2012—Chamber Awards
May 21, 2012
Governor’s Hall at Sailwinds Park
The events committee is working to build on last year’s outstanding success as they matched local
foods with local chefs in a what was an appetizing delight. The evening was capped of by recog-
nizing out those that had excelled in their area, all to create a Celebration of Dorchester.
This year plan now to come out to see some familiar faces and a few surprises. Tickets are availa-
ble at the Chamber office at $35 per person. Seating is limited so please do not wait.
Chamber Awards—2012
How often have said that so and so has done a outstanding job. Or the ABC Shop has really done
a great job expanding its business. Now is the time to put those thoughts on paper and get the per-
son or organization the credit they deserve. Six categories will be judged this year. The categories
and criteria for each award are included as an insert in this news letter.
Help us recognize those that have contributed so much energy toward making this the great com-
munity it is. This is just one more way to tell them thank you!
Collins and Bramble
Honored by German Partnership
Former Dorchester County Chamber President Gale Collins
and Former Dorchester County Councilman Glen Bramble
were recent recipients of the Founders of the Dor-
chester-Dueren Partnership Award recognizing their
groundbreaking participation in developing one of the top
international partnerships in the State of Maryland. The
award honoring their work was presented by Rudi
Frishmuth on behalf of Duren County Administrator Wolf-
gang Spelthan during a ceremony at the Cambridge Hyatt
Regency.
Formed six years ago, the Dorchester County German Partnership committee developed a partnership with sister
county, Deuren County of Germany. The Dorchester-Dueren Partnership was so successful that in 2009
Governor O’Malley pressed then Partnership facilitator, Gale Collins, to be a presenter at a Roundtable meeting
to share the steps that led to the formation of their impressively active partnership with other sister county
partnerships in the State of Maryland. After Dorchester County citizens and business leaders responded with a
visit to Deuren County, an official recognition of the partnership followed in 2006, with the signing of a
resolution of cooperation that had been written, as a joint effort, by Dorchester Chamber and County Council

Legislative Affairs
The 2012 session of the Maryland General Assembly is nearly complete. Sine Die is midnight Monday, April
9. Hang on – it is not over until it’s over. A thought very scary, for this has been a most challenging session. Mary-
land’s budget concerns are well documented as has been the economic challenges facing business across the state.
Yet the governor and legislators continue to bring forth higher taxes and new fees. Stay up to date on issues by way
of the Maryland Chamber’s Action Network. (www.chamberactionnetwork.com).
Septic System Bill (SB 236/HB 445): Legislation that would limit development relying on septic systems was ap-
proved by the Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee. Concern is that this bill would harm
development opportunities, particularly in rural jurisdictions, and it would have a negative impact on developers,
home builders and associated contractors. Next step is the Senate floor.
Transportation Increases in Maryland’s gas tax are still in play. Maryland must protect the integrity of the Trans-
portation Trust Fund (TTF) by ensuring transportation funds are not diverted for other uses, and the restoration of
funds previously transferred, including local Highway User Revenues.
Funding for Maryland’s two mass transit systems should come from those benefiting from it. We would en-
courage establishment of dedicated funding sources for mass transit and increasing MTA’s farebox recovery rate.
Respectfully we sympathize with those living in the Baltimore Washington corridor. Studies have indicated the DC
metro area has the worst traffic and commute in the country and Baltimore is not far behind. Give the region a
chance to solve its problem and impact those effected by that problem-create a regional taxing authority – match
cost and benefits.
Had trust fund and MTA been responsibly dealt with there would be no need to consider an increase in the gas
tax.
Budget Reconciliation and Financing Acts (BRFA) Maryland Chamber VP of Government Affairs recently
joined with our own Del. Addie Eckardt before the House Appropriations Committee to support HB1413, which
would propose a constitutional amendment that would require that statutory changes necessary to balance the state
budget be enacted through separate legislation for each budget item.
Maryland has been allowed to drift away from a proven policy that worked well for over 200 years. The old
adage of give a little and they want more is never been more true. The BRFA of 2012 was introduced with 48 pag-
es, and had a 116-page fiscal note. According to the Dept. of Legislative Services, the bill encompassed 55 actions:
11 fund balance transfers, 15 general fund enhancements, 1 redirection of dedicated revenues, 11 fund swaps and
cost shifts, 5 mandate relief provisions, and 3 other measures. The BRFA bill has grown to include provisions that
in some cases have little to do with balancing the budget, but are loaded onto the legislation as a “must pass” bill.
The wisdom of our forefathers should be considered. Since 1851 Maryland’s constitution has required “every
Law enacted by the General Assembly shall embrace but one subject.” The purpose of this requirement has been to
allow legislators to consider each issue independently on its own merits.
OPEN ENROLLMENT—ENERGY BUYING CO-OP
One of the exclusive benefits of your Chamber membership is the ability to participate in the electric buying
co-op. Pricing is at an all-time low, this is an excellent time for your business to seek electricity supply services.
The cooperative pools the buying power of commercial customers to procure energy at the best available competi-
tive market price. The program also saves individual Members the time and expense of trying to choose a supplier
on their own. Interested in finding out more, the Dorchester Chamber is inviting members to attend an information-
al webinar regarding the Energy Cooperative. They will be held April 12—3 pm; April 19—2 pm; April 26-1pm.
To find out more call the Chamber office or go directly to www.cqiassociates.com to register.

Rommel’s Ace donates inventory worth over $1 million to
Habitat for Humanity ReStores
Rommel’s Ace, a chain of eleven locally owned and operated hardware stores in MD,
DE, and VA, donated over $1 million in inventory to regional Habitat for Humanity
ReStores. Habitat for Humanity Choptank is the beneficiary of the entire Cambridge
and Stevensville Rommel’s Ace donation. The new, never-used items will be sold at
the ReStore in Easton. Proceeds of the sales will go toward building simple, decent
and affordable homes in partnership with qualifying low income families.
This generous donation is the result of Rommel’s Ace decision to eliminate discontin-
ued inventory across the chain in an effort to remerchandise all stores before the start
of the spring selling season.
“It’s strong community partners like Rommel’s Ace who help us with our mission,”
said Lee Weldon, Manager of the Habitat Choptank ReStore. “Their donation will
result in additional revenue to support our home building and home ownership
program for families who could not qualify for conventional mortgage financing.”
Habitat Choptank has made home ownership possible for 55 families to date and currently partners with eight local fami-
lies. These families are offered a “hand up” out of poverty housing. After completing “sweat equity” hours and
pre-homeownership classes, these families will purchase homes that they helped construct and assume responsibility for
repaying an interest-free Habitat mortgage.
ReStore volunteers are busy stocking the shelves with the donations, and are eager for customers to see the new
inventory. The ReStore is a resale center for donated appliances, cabinets, furniture, and building supplies located at
8648 Commerce Drive in Easton. For more information about the ReStore, call 410-820-6186 or visit
www.habitatchoptank.org .
For more information about Rommel’s Ace, contact Terry Ayers at 410.822.2450x17 or visit http://

The Habitat Choptank ReStore arrives at
the Rommel’s Ace store in Cambridge to
collect the donation from that location.

consequence of that effort. None of this would be possible without our amazing team and our loyal

RPS ISG International Employees Pass CISR Tests
RPS ISG International employees congratulated Liz McLeod and Jennifer Shaw
who recently passed the second part of the five-part CISR (Certified Insurance Ser-
vice Representative) designation course.
This important insurance designation recognizes the importance of insurance
knowledge, customer service, minimizing E&O claims and understanding and ana-
lyzing risks and exposures. The five sections of the course include Insuring Com-
mercial Property, Agency Operations, Insuring Commercial Casualty Exposures, Insuring Personal Auto Exposures and
Insuring Personal Residential Property. The CISR curriculum totals 40 hours of both classroom and online study.
Both Account Managers have successfully completed the Agency Operations and Property sections. McLeod has also
passed the Casualty part.
“I’m thrilled to have completed another section, but I have to remain focused in order to earn my CISR designation. I’m
not quite done yet!” said McLeod.
“Agreed,” Shaw claimed. “It feels great to have two parts down, yet I still have to remain committed because this is an
important step in my career.”
