17th Annual Chowder Cook-Off was a HUGE Success

They came, they tasted, they boogied the afternoon away! The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce held the 17 th Annual Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Carolina Beach Lake.

A record-setting crowd got to enjoy delicious chowder from eight local restaurants from Carolina Beach to Wilmington and as far away as Shallotte. Thousands enjoyed great food, good music, and family fun, with the kids and the entire family at this family-oriented event. Children enjoyed the park’s playground and a Kidz Zone with face-painting, a giant inflatable slide and more. The gates were scheduled to open at 11:30 am, but due to the crowds, people were admitted by 10:45 am.

A distinguished panel of judges including Mayors, Councilmen and Media personalities selected Shuckers Oyster Bar & Grill from Ogden as the Judge’s 1st Place winner, while The Sawmill Restaurant in Monkey Junction the Judge’s 1st Runner Up. The coveted People’s Choice 1st place winner went to Havana’s-Carolina Beach, for their third year in a row, while the 1st Runner-up was The Twisted Lime, now open in Carolina Beach. Two additional prizes were awarded with the Most Enthusi-

astic Tent going to Deck House Casual Dining and the Best Decorated Tent went to The Twisted Lime.

During the Chowder Cook-Off, The Mark Roberts Band entertained the 4,500+ folks, while they ate chowder, swayed to the beat and downed a cold beverage in the picture-perfect Pleasure Island afternoon. The Chamber would like to thank all their sponsors (Eye Care Associates, Carolina Family Medicine and Urgent Care, Bryant Real Estate, R.A. Jeffries Distributing and the Town of Carolina Beach), as well as all our volunteers, Step-Up For Soldiers, The Pleasure Island Parrot Heads and espe-cially the eight competing restaurants.

REMEMBER – On Pleasure Island, Chowder always tastes better than azaleas! See you next year.

The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the UNCW Entrepre-neurship Center has selected Matt Piccinin and Sean Cook, owners of Shuckin’ Shack in Carolina Beach and downtown Wilmington winners of the 7th Annual Pleasure Island Entrepreneur of the Year for 2013. Shuckin’ Shack will be honored at an awards break-fast held May 23rd at the UNCW Burney Center along with other Chamber winners and the 2013 Coastal Entrepreneurs of the Year. The UNCW Entrepreneurship Center, the

Greater Wilmington Business Journal, and local Chambers of Commerce organized the competition to shine a spotlight on up-and-coming entrepreneurs in the Cape Fear region and to help foster entrepreneurial activity in our region. Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar was the brain child of two local friends Matt Piccinin and Sean Cook. They felt that

Pleasure Island needed an Oyster Bar and a place to enjoy great local steamed seafood in a relaxed atmos-

phere. Shuckin’ Shack opened 5 years ago in Carolina Beach with only 6 employees. It has now expanded to

include a downtown Wilmington location and over 30 employees. You can also find Shuckin’ Shack Oysters and

Shrimp at local events such as The Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival, Pleasure Island Chowder Cook Off and

Step Up For Soldiers Back Yard BBQ. The Shack can even bring the party to you including an oyster steamer,

official shack shucking tables, and all the fixings!

Shuckin’ Shack has received rave reviews from local print media and is a hot spot for locals and tourists. This

year they were honored to be runner up for best oysters in Encore Magazines “Best of Wilmington”. When you

walk into the new location It is obvious, from the local memorabilia and photographs displayed on the bar top, that

even though The Shack is expanding its roots are deep in Carolina Beach and the local customers who have be-

come more like family. Owners Matt and Sean give back to their community by supporting local children’s athlet-

ics including sponsoring and coaching Myrtle Grove Baseball and the new Pleasure Island Youth Baseball as well

as sponsoring a team for Pleasure Island Soccer for the past 4 years. They are also involved in several charities

including Got Em On Live Bait Club, Nourish NC, and Ashley High School Boosters. Listed below are past recipi-

ents of this prestigious award:

Please join us and place a stone as we form the pathway of the new community labyrinth, located near the corner of Lumberton Ave. and 3rd Street in Carolina Beach. In the spirit of giving back to the communi-ty it serves, the Carolina Beach Farmer’s Market is providing the

materials and gathering a group of helping hands to install this labyrinth under the beautiful old oaks on the grounds generously provided by St. Paul’s UMC. It will be open and available to the public at all times. A labyrinth is a meandering but purposeful path that looks like a maze but is not. People walk labyrinths for many reasons. They are used for reflection, meditation, prayer, and simply to relax. Some shed their problems as they walk to the center, pause to gather strength, and then follow the pathway out to rejoin the world. The participant can ascribe their own spiritual meaning to this ritual walk. The theory is that by walking the labyrinth one partakes of a spiritual journey of self-examination and enlighten-ment. All experience it differently, but labyrinths bring people together on the common path of life. “We are not human beings on a spiritual path, but spiritual beings on a human path.” The labyrinth was made possible by the Town of Carolina Beach allowing the farmer’s market to use a portion of its pro-ceeds for a project that the community can enjoy in return for using the space at the lake. Preparation of the surface will be done in advance and then all are invited to help lay the stone pathway on Saturday, May 4th beginning at 9:00am. For more information please contact Janet Knott at 910-431-8122. ###

TAG AND TAX TOGETHER COMBINED BILLS WILL BE DELIVERED ON REVISED SCHEDULE Bills will go out in July rather than May

The first combined tag and tax notices will be mailed on a revised schedule, going out for September renewals rather than for renewals due in July. The revision allows for additional time to test and certify systems provided by vendors supplying online services for vehicle dealers. The program will still be ready to implement on July 1 and that is when the DMV will begin collecting, however the first combined tag and tax notices will now be for vehicle renewals due in September 2013.

The new bills will reflect both vehicle property tax information from counties and other taxing jurisdictions, as well as vehicle registration and inspection information. Drivers used to pay for tags and taxes separately. The new program, “Tag & Tax Together,” will require one payment for both bills. Both tag renewals and tax payments must be paid in full to renew vehicle registration.

An easy-to-read map of the combined notice posted on the DMV website shows where property tax information is listed and how to find vehicle registration facts. After receiving your entire payment, NCDMV will renew your vehicle registration and forward the property tax portion of your payment directly to your county revenue office.

Vehicle owners can tell if they will be among the first to receive the new bills by checking to see if they have a “9” (for the month of September) sticker on their license tag. With each month that passes, additional vehicle owners will receive the new notice when their renewal is due. By mid-2014, the program should include all North Carolina vehicle owners.

The DMV website features frequently-asked questions about the combined billing program and contact information for county revenue offices across the state. A Spanish version of the questions has also been posted. (Vea una version en Español de las preguntas más frecuentes.) DMV has produced a video to help explain the new program. The result of a law first passed by the General Assembly in 2005, the combination goes into effect this summer following the incorporation of county tax rates into the vehicle registration system. It is designed to provide easy one-time payment of vehicle tags and property taxes across the state. In addition to the “Tag & Tax Together” information on the website, NCDMV, the N.C. Department of Revenue and North Carolina’s 100 counties are working together to get the word out about the new combined program.

Key facts about the program: · The new Tag and Tax Together program is for your vehicle property tax only and does not affect your mortgage or home property tax.

· Your vehicle tax will be due at the same time your vehicle registration is due. The due date will be printed on the new renewal notice that you receive in the mail.

· Your vehicle’s annual registration renewal fees will remain the same. The increase in your bill is from the addition of the

vehicle property tax.

· No owner will have to pay taxes twice in the same tax year for the same vehicle. It is important to look at the vehicle property tax year rather than the calendar year. By law, the tax year for your vehicle begins the first month after your previous registration expires. While it is possible to pay twice in a calendar year, no vehicle owner will pay twice in the same tax year or for the same 12-month period.
