    (not to be confused with Tanacetum annuum

    wild, blue or atlas chamomile)

    FAMILY NAME Asteraceae (Compositae)

    SYNONYMS M. chamomilla, Hungarian chamomile, single chamomile

    COLOUR Dark blue, may turn green with age

    VISCOSITY Medium to thick

    AROMA Sweet, straw-like / warm / herbaceous

    NOTE Middle

    Native to Europe and north Asia, it is now produced in France, Spain, Hungary, Morocco,

    Egypt, Afghanistan, and South America

    PARTS USED Fresh flowering tops

    EXTRACTION METHOD Steam distillation

    YIELD 0.2 0.4%

    BLENDS WELL WITH

    Geranium, lavender, patchouli, rose, benzoin, neroli, bergamot, marjoram, lemon, ylang

    ylang, jasmine, clary sage, labdanum

    NOTE:

    1. The chamazulene is not present in the fresh flower, but rather produced during theprocess of distillation

    2. Contains more azulene than Roman chamomile and is therefore considered abetter anti-inflammatory

    BATH / FOOT BATH

    Analgesic properties are effective in relieving the discomfort associated withmenstrual pain, when used in massage, compress and baths

    Will ease the painful cramps by reducing excessive menstrual flowCREAM OR MASSAGE OIL

    Massage and compresses should be applied to the lower abdomen for infectionssuch as cystitis

    Can be used in massage where there is severe muscular pain and is particularlyeffective for this problem

    COMPRESS

    Hot compress

    Chamomile is a good choice of essential oil to use where inflammation is presentUsed in a hot compress for:

    Boils, abscesses, tooth abscesses until the sufferer can get to the dentist Infected cuts, splinters, etcChamomile can also be used in compress for internal inflammatory conditions, for

    problems associated with the digestive tract, such as:

    Colitis Gastritis DiarrhoeaCold compress

    The anti-inflammatory property in chamomile is also useful when applied in coldcompress for inflamed joints

    NOTES

    German chamomile is more effective as an anti-inflammatory than Romanchamomile. It is the chemical difference between the two chamomiles that affects

    their properties, eg:

    Roman chamomile has ketones while German chamomile does not
