ABSTRACT

The line loss minimization and the voltage regulation in distribution system are challenging problems when the entire feeder system is not economic to upgrade. In this paper, a new method for achieving the voltage regulation and line loss minimization in a loop distribution system has been presented by using one of the important FACTS devices i.e. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). First, the line loss minimum conditions in the loop distribution system is presented after that the load voltage regulation is presented under the line loss minimum condition to upgrade the distribution system.

OBJECTIVES

• Conversion of radial to loop• Line loss minimization• All nodes voltage regulation• UPFC to minimize the total line loss or to regulate the load

voltage to be equal in magnitude to the nominal source voltage under loss minimization

• Capability to regulate all node voltages to be within the permissible voltage range

ADVANTAGES OF LOOP

• If one source of power fails, switches are thrown and power can be fed to customers from the other source.

•  Better continuity of service•  Improved system reliability• loss reduction

DISADVANTAGES OF RADIAL

•  A radial system has only one power source for a group of customers.

• Less reliability• More losses• Less continuity of service
