Chandrika Kaul é professora na Escola de História da Universidade de St. Andrews (Escócia). Doutorou-se na Universidade de Oxford e inves�ga o imperialismo britânico, centrando a sua na imprensa britânica e indiana - com uma perspec�va histórica - , na história da Índia (século XX) e na propaganda britânica. É a fundadora e co-editora da série de livros “Palgrave Studies in the History of the Media” (Palgrave Macmillan), membro do comité editorial da revista Media History (Routledge) e do conselho consul�vo da Twen�eth Century Bri�sh History (Oxford University Press).

SOBRE A ORADORA

The BBC occupies a fundamentally seminal posi�on in the history of journalism and mass communica�on, not simply in the UK, but globally. However, whilst scholars have analysed the BBC in rela�on to various domes�c and interna�onal issues, one area of its impact remains largely ignored. And it is here that my research project breaks new ground. For while the importance of the Bri�sh Empire to the BBC is widely acknowledged, there is li�le awareness of the significant role of the BBC vis-a-vis India. This paper forms part of my book project on the BBC and India and raises fundamental ques�ons about the historical rela�onship between media and empire. It aims to interrogate interconnected issues about imperial power and technological control, broadcas�ng culture and empire, war propaganda and the BBC, and decolonisa�on as a mediated phenomenon.
