Student Satisfaction Analysis10 Honors English
Demographics
My Honors 10 class consists of twenty-four students: fourteen female students and tenmale students. Out of these students, two are African American, two are Asian
American, and the rest are White. All of these students speak English fluently, and one
student has an IEP that notes difficulty writing information by hand (but so far, thisstudent has demonstrated the ability to follow along with the class in every assignment).
Influencing Factors
My Honors 10 class: I passed out the surveys right before administering the unit exam
(and on the day that the students returned from the five-day hurrication), so the
students may have been fidgety and annoyed while filling it out.
Analysis
Knowledge of the subject matter
Most of the students think that I have knowledge of the subject matter. Of the
twenty-five surveys, the majority of the students gave scores of 1 or 2 for thestatements dealing with knowledge of the subject matter (My teacher knows and
understands the subject being taught, My teacher provides helpful feedback, My
teacher makes things easy for me to understand, and My teacher assigns homeworkthat relates to our class work). The one statement that received six scores of 3 and
one score of 4 was My teacher makes things easy for me to understand. The
statement My teacher provides helpful feedback also received five scores that wereeither a 3 or a 4.
While I give brief feedback notes on papers (I try to highlight one strength and one
weakness in each paper), I always emphasize that detailed feedback will be givenduring writing conferences, which can be scheduled during CHAT on Wednesdays
and Thursdays. Since these meetings are not required, the students who do not
choose to schedule them may not think that I am providing ample feedback.
Pedagogical knowledge
I used the following statements to determine the students opinion on my pedagogical
knowledge: My teacher gives clear instructions, My teacher relates lessons toother students or the real world, My teacher uses different materials and activities
to help us learn, and My teacher states the purpose of our lessons. Of the four
statements, the one that got the most negative feedback was My teacher relateslessons to other students or the real world (two scores of 4 and one score of 5).
The statement My teacher uses different materials & activities to help us learn
received five scores of 3 or 4. The statement receiving mostly scores of 1 and2 was the statement, My teacher gives clear instructions.

Caring and effectiveThe students gave scores of 1 or 2 to the statement, My teacher is available to
help me outside of class. I think this statement received the highest scores because I
constantly emphasize that they can come to me during CHAT (our schools bi-weekly
extended lunch period. While not all of the students do not take advantage of thisopportunity to meet with me, they are aware that I am available during this time. I
also try to regularly check up on students before and after class, especially those who
tend to have anxiety issues or have trouble focusing in class.
While most of the statements received scores between 1 and 3, the statement My
teacher treats everyone fairly received one score of 4, which might be attributed tomy strict late work policy. A couple students have demonstrated frustration over the
fact that they received zeros on work that was turned two days after it was due.
Another instance that students may have felt frustration over the issue of fairness iswhen they divided into two teams for a literature review game. One of the teams was
significantly more knowledgeable about the subject than the other team, so thestudents did not think the teams were divided fairly.
Areas of improvement
I think my main areas of improvement are giving useful feedback and taking the timeto share with the students the purpose of the lessons that I teach. Although the CHAT
times are useful, I need to motivate students to come by making sure that I am well-
prepared as a teacher during those meetings.
As for stating the purpose of lessons, this is a skill that I need to work on daily. I tend
to want to get straight into the lesson without taking the time to explain its relevance.
Next steps
In order to provide better feedback and communicate the purpose of our lessons moreeffectively, I need to further dialogue with my students. I plan to have the students
write three ways that this class can improve (specifically dealing with feedback and
relevance), which will provide them a more open-ended way to discuss theirconcerns.
Also, I am going to focus on the students who tend to go under the radar (those who
do not necessarily demonstrate the need for extra attention nor actively seek it),because I tend to overlook those students. I will focus on them by conversing with
them before and after class, as well as paying closer attention to their writing skills
and classroom habits.
