RedesigningEducation for the21st Century

Gaurav Marya,Chairman, Franchise India

The 21st century calls for preparing the youth for a Knowledge-led economy. This calls for systemic reforms to improve teaching and learning in Indian schools to meet the needs of the millennial students who wants to make a difference to their life and the prosperity of the country.

Our nation is becoming increasingly divided. There is an India of the well off, where well-educated families can afford good education for their children and there is an India where families struggling in poverty or close to it, have little access to even a modest education. At a time when, more than ever before, economic progress and educational achievement have become inextricably linked, the scenario of a Knowledge-led economy calls for a serious need to evaluate the achievement gap in education and device ways to provide every child with an education that will enable them to make a difference.

In one sense we live in exciting times. Given the population and available resources, there will be a need for reinvention of everything. This will call for Change thinking by the faculty, the institutions, the pedagogical practices, the partners and service providers who will have to transform themselves to stay relevant and competitive in todays global economy.

Today leaders in education are exploring how they can intelligently redesign the systems they've inherited to meet this challenge, rather than merely manage them within the existing constraints. What can we do to help leaders in education draw on knowledge about teaching and learning as well as organizations and management practices that will build and sustain a new and responsive set of schools and colleges to meet the needs of 21st-century India? Accordingly the theme of Indian Education Congress 2013 is Rethinking Return on Education (ROE).

The Indian Education Congress 2013 in its third edition has emerged as the foremost forum that integrates what is best in the field of education with what is rewarding in the world of business. The Indian Education Congress brings together a diverse set of education entrepreneurs, institutional leaders, investors and suppliers in an engaging setting to explore and integrate principles of effective leadership, entrepreneurship, and management with the principles of imparting education that would produce both growth and equity.

I look forward to welcoming you to the deliberations across the two days of the Congress on how we should redesign schools for the 21st century.

During 2013 we will provide a program aligned with our Rethinking Return on Education (ROE) theme. Conference attendees will experience a rich educational program as they select from 80+ Technical Sessions/Super Sessions and world class Keynotes in an interactive and collaborative environment. We have built thought provoking sessions designed to provide real solutions and skills that can be implemented right away, as well as present strategies for Achieving Greatness for your company and for yourself.

The Indian Education Congress will bring together Ministries of Education, Key Representatives of Educational Institutes, Trade Bodies and Association, Educationists, Academicians, NGOs, Policy Makers, Investment Groups and Stakeholders from the Education Sector. The conference will be particularly interesting for:

The Demand Gap

Only 5% of Indians aged 19-24 formallylearn a trade

A very good initiative by Franchise India. The Conference provided exposure to very valid and relaistic areas of education, a great platform to hear the view-points of experts in the field.Gitanjali Dutta, Brainworks Learning Systems

Overall well organised conference which covered all aspects of the education sector laying emphasis on the opportunities and challenges. It was 2 full days of good information.Rangesh Nayar, Director, SWAFE Consultancy

The next big leap in education can happen only if education is also looked at as an enterprise. We need best practices, scalable models and investment by organised players to achieve this. Once the education market gets consolidated then pan-India outreach can be achieved.Mr. Amit Gupta, CEO, S. Chand

In India, the condition of primary education sector is quite good. There are plenty of options available. But the efficiency of the secondary education is very low. In the next 3-5 years we need double the number of secondary schools than we have now. There is an urgent need for increase in financing for senior secondary schools. Government alone cannot fulfill the needs. Hence there is a requirement for private funding.Mr. Ashok Ganguly, Former Chairman, CBSE

The rate at which teachers join the profession is much lower than at which they leave. This can be changed only if it is acknowledged that teachers are the creators of knowledge. Managing the performance of teachers is not a small task. There are different kinds of management performance techniques and they should be applied according to the need of the hour. A teacher should be seen as someone who builds capacity. Therefore, it is vital to take into account the needs of the teachers and they should feel responsible rather than taking it as something that has been put as a burden on their head.Mr. Ashish Rajpal, Founder & CEO, iDiscoveri

Presently, technology has penetrated only 5% of schools while 95% are still open. The day would not be far when school students would be carrying laptops and notebooks to classrooms. In the next couple of years, almost 15-20 million rupees would be spent on providing laptop and notebooks to school students. The introduction of 3G and Broadband will bring about a change in the landscape of education.Mr. Shantanu Prakash, Founder, Educomp
