ISCGT 2017 3rd Leg @ Raffles Country Club CBC Badminton Team Tournament, 2017
Christmas Bowl 2017
Since the beginning of our term, we have introduced many more events and activities to encourage active participation of our members as well as the wider community. We have embarked on several initiatives to raise the level of customer service of our staff. We have also broadened our communications approach to engage members via various media in a more holistic way. So going beyond the staples of our Club website, monthly flyers and this quarterly magazine, we have supplemented real time digital displays strategically placed around Club’s premises. As for specific interest groups, we have set up various group chats via WhatsApp, and direct email blasts are also being used to keep members abreast of Club’s happenings. In August 2017, we raised our monthly subscription by 20 dollars (the last time we adjusted our subscription was in 2004). Since the subscription fee increased, 123 members have resigned related to the increase. And while we regret the resignation of any member, the attrition rate was much lower than anticipated. I would like to thank all members for your
continuous support, and your trust in the future of the Club. With hindsight, the subscription fee increase was timely, as new rulings for the Jackpot Room imposed by the authorities have had a significant negative impact on the Club’s income stream. In November 2017, we completed the repainting of the main building, giving a fresh facade that blends well with the surroundings. We have also replaced the old poolside furniture with new tables, chairs and deckchairs, to provide pool-side comfort. We will next be renovating, and repainting the interior of the guestrooms to refresh and update the rooms with a resort-like ambience. In order to manage costs, these jobs will largely be done by our maintenance staff, with external contractors engaged to help only as their expertise is required.
In spite of the increase in the number of events and activities, the management has remained prudent in spending matters. The Club management has also taken steps to streamline manpower deployment and
implemented multi-tasking roles across the different departments, to reduce manpower needs. My appreciation goes to all our sections chairpersons, sub-committees and convenors for organising events and activities despite having reduced budgets to work with. I would also like to thank our generous sponsors for chipping to support many of the Club events and activities. On behalf of the Management Committee, I like to take this opportunity to wish our members ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’ and a Prosperous and Blessed New Year!

The third and final leg of the Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament was held at the very beautiful lake course at Raffles Country Club (which sadly will be making way for the proposed High-Speed Rail in July next year). The weather was beautiful, with cloudy skies - every golfer’s dream.
We were privileged to be able to play with very good golfers from other Clubs such as Singapore Recreation Club, Singapore Swimming Club, and the Eurasian Association. But regrettably, it was our final game in the ISCGT format. Over many years with the ISCGT, I have participated in most of the tournaments, enjoying competitive golf and making many friends, but alas, I only won in the lucky draws! I eagerly look out for more events coming from the Golf Section soon.

Annual Friendly Golf Tournament 2017 @ Batam
28-29 October 2017
sports
The Club’s annual 2-day Golf Tournament was held at Batam’s scenic Palm Springs Golf & Country Club, attracting 22 participants. (Unfortunately, several of our regular golfers were unavailable for various reasons). The golfers were put through their paces over 36 holes which stretched 2 days. In the evening, participants were treated to a sumptuous Batam-style dinner followed by evening activities.
We would like to especially thank goes to Palm Springs Golf & Country Club for their support, and hosting our tournament. We would also like to thank our Club’s support staff for their excellent service during the event.

“My wife and I were both involved in this competition – it was her first time being involved in this competition. It was eye-opening for us to witness the quality of the 5 Men’s bowlers during the step ladder finals. There was lots of excitement, with both tension and good sportsmanship displayed by these bowlers competing intensely with one another. After the games, we had a buffet dinner and the presentation of generous prizes for all participating bowlers.
We have made great friends and enjoyed the bonding among all bowlers and invited guests. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Mr Roland Tan, the
Bowling Committee and the Club’s staff for this great event and the many other bowling events organised throughout the year. We hope the bowling fraternity will continue to make our Club more vibrant and enjoyable for all members.

Bowling Bilateral CBC vs SPGG 2017
12 Nov 2017
sports
Changi Beach Club has partnered with the Singapore Polytechnic Graduates’ Guild in annual bilateral bowling games for several years now. Our bowlers always enjoy the home and away format, with the away round being hosted earlier by SPGG on 6 October 2017. Bowlers from both teams enjoy the friendly acquaintances that have grown through the bowling games. The atmosphere was cordial and we all had a wonderful time.

Oktoberfest Oct 2017
social
On the whole I found the event highly enjoyable. The band was very engaging, and connected well with the crowd. The emcee for the night, Mr Andrew Chew, outfitted in suspenders, shorts and high socks really fit the theme. And I especially liked the Erdinger beer brought out authentic Bavarian Oktoberfest festive feelings.
Mr William Han
Mahjong Competition I consider myself very lucky to emerge as Champion at the CBC Mahjong Competition. I never expected to win as my name was not in the top 10 list after the first two rounds. Somehow in the final round I was very lucky, and accumulated $1,180 worth of chips from that single round.
I participated with a very relaxed frame of mind, intending that I would enjoy my time and make new friends. I will be back for next year’s competition, and will also encourage my family members to join in the fun.
Mdm Low Ah Siok
Last year, I participated in the Mahjong competition the when my brother Arthur Chew told me that there was shortage of ‘kakis’ [playing partners]. I emerged as 2nd runner-up then, and again this year.
I thank CBC’s Management Committee for organising such a fun and relaxed event allowing friends & relatives having quality bonding in a cool and conducive environment.

CBC Younger Members ‘Get-Together’
Nov 2017
social
An informal ‘Get-Together’ event was organised to meet and engage younger members of the Club. The participants, ranging from 16 to 45 years old were invited directly via email. They enjoyed a simple fare of barbequing and building their own burger with the ingredients and salad catered by Café Hollyday. Their burgers were consumed by the beach, against the backdrop of a beautiful sunset, which holds nostalgic memories for many of the participants, reminding them of their childhood and teenage years, swimming and fishing there.
The dialogue session that followed sought to understand the social and recreational needs and wants of our younger adult members today. In essence, how to better make the Club’s activities and events more relevant to this group. The participants offered many insights and useful suggestions how the Club may better engage and provide relevant activities for this membership demographic. The evening with a round of karaoke.

Going forward, we hope to encourage a small group of younger adult members to identify, organise and conduct social and recreational activities which are relevant to our younger members. We hope the first of these activities will be held in the next quarter, and will be directly advertised to our younger members by email and social media (which they are more apt to utilise).
If you are a younger adult member (aged 16-45 years) and would like to be involved in organising such activities / events, or if you have any feedback concerning this area, kindly contact [email protected]

I write to tell you that this was the best function organized by CBC in its history. I joined the Club since 1971 and attended such functions for many years and it was a far cry from today’s facilities. Members had to make do with some air-conditioning, a small 25 meter, salt water swimming pool and the building where we were dancing was actually sagging slowly into the sea. So when members were having much fun on the dancefloor, I recall the days when we were careful lest the vibrations cause the entire building to collapse. If you look from the boardwalk, you can still see the tilt. Of course, it was rectified and the foundations strengthened.
This year, it is really ‘Solid Gold’. The organising committee’s tasteful, minimal transformation of the restaurant floor into a well-designed year-end party venue by light and sound, to the actual thoughtful soft touches, the well-curated professional event, the smooth flow - with a segment for everyone, the thoughtful planning showed throughout.
To the committee members and staff who worked tirelessly for members to enjoy, thank you for making it enjoyable for everyone.

Fire Drill 28 Sep 2017
community events
The objective of this year’s fire drill was to have fire wardens updated and understanding their respective roles and responsibilities. All participants gathered at the ‘scene of the incident’ to learn about the Emergency Response Team (ERT). Participants also learned how to safely approach the fire, various precautionary actions, and mitigation of potential dangers.
As a result of this drill, participants know how to respond to fire emergencies and how to evacuate members and guests quickly and safely from all areas of the Club.

Educational TourAs part of our ongoing outreach to wider community groups, Changi Beach Club has hosted several educational tours of the Club’s premises for students. These ‘learning journeys’ provide enrichment opportunities for students to gain insights into the sports, recreational and hospitality sectors, which they may later choose to study and work in.
This latest batch students from Punggol Secondary School were given students first-hand view of the Club’s hospitality facilities by Mr Milton, a hospitality course facilitator.
