Chiang Kai-shek• Successor of Sun Yat-sen that established the KMT as the ruling party
of China.
Chinese Civil War• War between the KMT and Communists in China.
Mao Zedong• Leader of the Communists during the Chinese Civil War and founder
of the People's Republic of China.
Republic of China• Another name for the island of Taiwan once established by the KMT.
People's Republic of China• The largest communist nation in the world located in mainland China.
Great Leap Forward• Implemented by Zedong in which huge communes were created as a
way of catapulting the revolution towards its goal of a true Marxist state.
Cultural Revolution• Instituted by Zedong to erase all traces of a Western-influenced
intelligentsia.
Tiananmen Square Massacre• The Chinese government opening fire on demonstrators in Tiananmen
Square calling for democratic reform.
