Meet Erikka and Zig.

Zig was born in New York. It was a hard labor and the epidural didn’t quite work. As Zig’s heart rate began to drop, it was decided an emergency c-section was a way to relieve fetal stress. When he was born, his breathing wasn’t quite right. So the hospital kept him for a few weeks and once his breathing got better, they sent him home.

However, the family realized something else was going on. Zig was sick, he continued to breath oddly and it appeared as if he only used half of his body. He couldn’t sit up and Erikka was concerned Zig was in pain.

He appeared miserable. He cried continuously and seemed unhappy. His kept his head tilted, but when Erikka questioned the doctors, they told her not to worry. His symptoms weren’t severe.

But she couldn’t help but worry. Was he autistic? Was there something else going on? Erikka was was terrified, but it seemed like no one shared her level of fear. Her husband was convinced that she was just reacting out of the stress of having a newborn child and was sure that everything would be fine.

When Zig was 5 months old the family moved to Tucson. Erikka continued to worry about Zig’s well being.

By the time Zig was 18 months, his symptoms hadn’t gotten better. Erikka went online and contacted Easter Seals Blake Foundation. The next thing she knew, she had staff at her house doing a development assessment of Zig.

They agreed that it wasn’t right that he was constantly crying. For the first time, Erikka felt that maybe she wasn’t crazy.

Easter Seals Blake Foundation (ESBF) suggested that Zig be placed with speech and physical therapists to work on the issues identified. He was put in preschool and provided services, working to get his development back on track. The case worker also suggested Erikka take Zig to see a neurologist.

Erikka had an MRI done on Zig at 18 months old. What they found astounded everyone. It appeared in the midst of that difficult labor Zig likely had a stroke. Zig was diagnosed with hemiplegic cerebral palsy, dysarthria, and motor apraxia. All of those breathing issues that Erikka had noticed, were due to a stroke deep in his brain stem. His brain simply didn’t know how to tell the body to use both sides properly.

With the cause clearly identified they were able to get Zig’s issues under control. Tubes were put into his ears and eye, and he was put into specialized occupational therapy to work on his targeted issues. And soon everything started began to improve.

Today, Zig is almost 5 years old. He’s a well behaved, bright child that loves to play and socialize. These days Zig is doing amazing. He used to need help going up and down steps but now he’s jumping and climbing and running like an ordinary child. “Easter Seals Blake Foundation has changed Zig’s life in that they were able to identify issues and help validate my concerns,” says Erikka. “We were able to intervene early enough so that here we are, we have a four-year-old that is able to communicate his needs, self-regulate, and who can ride a bike!”
