Matter

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

Page 4: Changing Physical State

Solids Solids have a

definite shape and volume.

Solids have mass. Solids take up

space.

Page 5: Changing Physical State

Liquids Liquids have a definite

volume but no definite shape.

Liquids take the shape of their container.

Liquids have mass. Liquids take up space.

Page 6: Changing Physical State

Gasses Gasses have no

definite shape or volume.

Gasses spread out to fill the entire space given.

Gasses have weight. Gasses take up space.

States of Matter

What does it take for matter to move from one state to another?

Page 8: Changing Physical State

Energy determines the state!

SOLIDS

LIQUIDS

GASES

+ Energy

+ Energy

Page 9: Changing Physical State

Add or Subtract Energy. . .

When energy is added, particles move faster!

When energy is removed, particles move slower!

Page 10: Changing Physical State

• Measure of the movement of molecules (tiny particles) in matter

• Measured using a thermometer or temperature probe

• Scientists use the Celsius scale to measure temperature

Page 11: Changing Physical State

What will happen if heat is added? Why?

Page 12: Changing Physical State

Solid + Energy = ?

When energy is added to solids, they become liquids!

Examples?

Page 13: Changing Physical State

Liquid + Energy = ? When energy is

added to liquids, they become gasses!

What examples can you think of?

Page 14: Changing Physical State

Changing States There are several names for matter changing

states:

State change

Phase change

Physical change

Page 15: Changing Physical State

Ice changes to water—water changes to ice, frozen water is still water

Page 16: Changing Physical State

Water changes to steam, a gas, when it is heated to its boiling point, water vapor

condenses to form a liquid

Page 17: Changing Physical State

Changes in State (phase changes)

1.Melting - solid to liquid

2.Freezing – liquid to solid

Page 18: Changing Physical State

Changes in State (phase changes)

3.Evaporating – liquid to gas

4.Condensing - gas to liquid

Page 19: Changing Physical State

So, did we get something new?

Ice cream and melted ice cream?

Chocolate and melted chocolate?

Ice, water, and water vapor?

Steel and molten steel?
