Changkat Primary SchoolFoundation Years
As the year is drawing to a close, I hope each and every student has had an enjoyable time in
school. I am certain everyone has grown, not only academically but also in character and
wisdom. As the year comes to a close, we take with us a myriad of memories. In this issue, we
revisit some of the events and activities carried out in school during the second half of the year.
I hope they become records of memorabilia for the children to fondly remember in years to
come. The teachers have had a delightful time with the students and we look forward to
another good year in 2018.

Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight
The MTL Fortnight provides students the opportunities to engage in the learningand use of their Mother Tongue Languages outside the context of their dailyacademic lessons. We believe that to fully appreciate and be confident in theirgrasp of the Mother Tongue Languages, our students need to be immersed in anenvironment that promotes active involvement and usage of the languages.
As such, the Mother Tongue department scheduled 2 consecutive weeks in Term 3for the MTL Fortnight activities. During this period, students were exposed toactivities promoting the use of their Mother Tongue Languages. Students wereengaged in various activities such as block printing, mosaic art, traditional gamesand a Speech & Drama session.

Other than humming and singing along to the National Day Parade (NDP) 2017 theme song, Because It's Singapore!, the Primary 2 students also kept fit while listening to the tune.
The Primary 2 students learnt not only this year's NDP song during their musiclessons, but also the workout dance steps accompanying it. This uniqueworkout has attracted many Singaporeans from all walks of life to dance along.Through this workout, our students learnt about school values such aspatriotism, as well as the importance of keeping fit.
Overall, the students had fun and enjoyed themselves through songs anddance.

Racial Harmony Day On 21 July 2017, Changkat Primary Schoolcommemorated Racial Harmony Day (RHD) with a seriesof exciting recess activities and a special assemblyprogramme. The theme for RHD 2017 is ‘The SingaporeWay’. As we make the journey from toleratingdifferences to embracing diversity, our Singapore identitycontinues to evolve. It is important that our studentstake pride in one another’s cultural heritage in order tostrengthen our collective identity.
During the lower and upper primary recesses, culturalheritage activity booths featuring traditional food andgames were set up in the canteen and foyer. Studentshad the opportunity to taste and savour representativetraditional food items of the different races in Singapore.
The climax of the day’s celebrations took place inthe school hall where there was a special assemblyprogramme lined up for the students. A Malaydance, an Indian dance and a fusion dance wereperformed on stage. The student emcees alsoshared information about the different percussionand string instruments used by the different races. One key highlight of the celebrations was theChangkat Fashion Runway where teachers designedtheir own creative ethnic costumes using recycledmaterials.
By participating in the activities, students not onlyenjoyed themselves, but also learnt to appreciatethe different cultures that make up Singapore anddeepen their understanding of racial harmony inSingapore.

To promote the joy of learning and in conjunction with the book, Poggy Frog and the Cows, P1 students went to the Singapore Science Centre where they learnt about frogs and toads. They were thrilled to see live specimens of frogs. They learnt interesting facts about frogs and toads such as the different places they live and the different ways they move. At the end of the session, students took home their very own craftwork of a tadpole.

P1 Science Centre Trip
Did you know?Frogs - Need to live near water- Have smooth, moist skin that makes them look “slimy”- Have narrow bodies- Have higher, rounder, bulgier eyes- Have longer hind legs
Toads- Do not need to live near water to survive- Have rough, dry, bumpy skin- Have wider bodies- Have lower, football shaped eyes- Have shorter, less powerful hind legs

I learnt about frogs and toads
from the trip. Baby frogs are
called tadpoles. Tadpoles have
tails that disappear when they
become frogs. I made a craftwork
of a tadpole to show my sister
and she liked it a lot.

P2 Science Centre TripP2 students visited the Singapore Science Centre where they learnt about earthworms and mealworms in a fun and interactive manner after reading the book Slither and Slide. Students had an authentic experience in handling live specimens of earthworms and mealworms, while conducting simple experiments on them to infer the environmental preferences of the creatures. Students also took home their very own craftwork of a worm.
Mrs Celestine LimST-Lower Primary
I enjoyed the trip to the
Singapore Science Centre very
much. I learnt that
earthworms and mealworms
like dark places through an
experiment. I also got to
touch the earthworms and
mealworms. The mealworms
have shiny skin. I also enjoyed
making a worm bookmark.
DING TZE HANS 2K
I was very happy to have a chance to
observe the earthworms and mealworms
closely. My group members and I took turns
to touch and feel the worms. We even placed
a worm on a tray under the lamp and traced
its movement. I never knew that worms do
not like bright lights!

make an earthworm bookmark. I used pipe-
cleaners, a big ice cream stick and double-

I learnt about earthworms and
mealworms. We put a mealworm
under light and some dried leaves
to see how it would react. I also
made a bookmark. I like making
the bookmark best because it was
interesting and fun.
TAI JIA XUAN 2E
One thing that I enjoyed the most
during the lesson was looking at the
mealworms and the earthworms and
learning new facts about them. I
learnt that mealworms would turn
into beetles in their adult stage.

I like the craftwork
activity best! I learnt
how to make a
bookmark with pipe-

Encouraging Children to Read
Encourage your children to read on theirown at home
Reading at home can help your children dobetter in school.
Keep a variety of reading materials in thehouse
Make sure to have reading materials forenjoyment as well as for reference.
Encourage your children to practice readingaloud
Frequently listen to your children read outloud and praise them often as they do so.Offer to read every other page or even everyother chapter to your children. Haveconversations and discussions about thebook.
Write short notes for your children to read
Write down their weekly householdresponsibilities for them to keep track of orput notes in their lunch bags.
Encourage activities that require reading
Cooking (reading a recipe), constructing a kite(reading directions), or a shell at the beach(reading a reference book) are someexamples.
Establish a reading time, even if it's only 10minutes each day
Make sure there is a good reading light inyour children's room and stock theirbookshelves with books and magazines thatare easy to both read and reach.
Talk with your children
Talking makes children think about theirexperiences more and helps them expandtheir vocabularies. Ask your children to givedetailed descriptions of events and to tellcomplete stories.
Give your children writing materials
Reading and writing go hand in hand.Children want to learn to write and topractice writing. If you make pencils, crayons, and paper available at all times, your childrenwill be more inclined to initiate writingactivities on their own.
Restrict television and computer time
The less time your children spend watchingtelevision and playing computer games, themore time they will have for reading-relatedactivities.
Visit the library once a week
Have your children apply for their own librarycard so they can check out books on theirown for schoolwork and for pleasure reading.
