THE CHANUKAH STORY AS TOLD TO THE CHILDREN

A long time ago, the Jewish people lived in the land of Palestine. They had built a beautiful Temple and they were very happy.

But there was a mean king who lived nearby and his name was Antiochus. He told the Jewish people that they would have to stop being Jewish and stop praying to God. One day, Antiochus sent his soldiers to burn down the Temple.

They pulled out all the seats, burned the Ark and the Torah and spilled all the oil out of the lamp that hung over the Ark. Then, they used the Temple to put their animals in! It was terrible.

The Jewish people escaped to the hills where they were very unhappy and cried for help. Then a brave Jewish man named Judah the Macabee came along and said, "Don't cry. If you want to be free, follow me." Then all the Jewish people followed him and fought hard against Antiochus and his soldiers and chased them out of Israel.

Judah the Macabee and his friends went back to the Temple and worked very hard cleaning and fixing everything. But, they were very sad because they couldn't find any oil to put in the lamp that hangs over the Ark. They looked and looked and couldn't find it anywhere. It would take 8 days to prepare more.

Just when everyone had given up, a little child cried out, "Look what I found!" He had found a little jar of oil in a cupboard at the back of the Temple. There was only a tiny drop of oil in it, but a wonderful thing happened - when they poured the oil in the lamp, it lasted 8 days.

The people were so happy that they held a big party. It was a holiday that lasted 8 days and the people called the holiday Chanukah.
