As you have already learned,in French, articles must agree with the

nouns that they modify both in gender and in number.

La fille est intelligente.

La fille est intelligente. ‘fille’ is feminine and singular. ‘La’ is feminine and singular.‘Intelligente’ is singular and

feminine.

A verb must agree with its subject in number.

‘Fille’ is third person singular and

feminine.‘est’ is the third

person singular form of être.

La fille est belle.

Le garçon est français. Il est de

Le Pluriel

What if the subject of the sentence is plural?

The third person plural form of être is ‘sont.’

The plural form of the definite articles la, le, l’ is les.

Indefinite Articles The plural form of un and une is des.

Les élèves sont intelligents.

Les élèves sont français.

Les élèves sont intelligents.

This sentence is an example of the plural.

The subject (élèves) is third person plural.

The verb sont is the third person plural form of être.

Intelligents is the plural, masculine form of intelligent. Français is masculine and plural or singular.

Les Pronoms Pluriels

Ils and Elles are the third person plural pronouns. Both of

them are translated as ‘they’.

L’accorde des adjectifs

Adjectives must agree in gender and in number with the nouns that they modify.

If the adjective is modifying a plural noun, then the adjective must be in the plural.

Note that the adjective is plural and feminine to agree with ‘filles’.

Le Pluriel

Ils sont élèves. Les élèves sont dynamiques.

Ils sont très contents. Ils sont d’Asheville. Ils sont élèves au lycèe à Asheville. La prof est dynamique aussi!

Les deux garçons sont copains. Ils sont élèves au collège à Marseille. Ils sont français. Ils sont très sociables.
