From The Principal OUR SCHOOL BIRTHDAY FOUNDATION DAY Yesterday, Thursday 20 th September, was the 23 rd anniversary of the Official Opening of The Essington School Darwin by Mrs. Margaret Muirhead, wife of the then Administrator of the Northern Territory. Our school at that stage consisted of less than seventy students, mainly of Preschool age. It is hard to imagine our school of today, with its three campuses and Preschool to Year 12 program, not being part of the Darwin educational landscape. The School only exists, however, because of the desire and determination of the founding group of parents led by Prof. Grahame Webb to start a school that met their needs. In the twenty three years since, the support of many parents has allowed the school to develop and prosper from the small Preschool/early Primary school housed in leased facilities at the Greek School. Our current three year Strategic Plan (for 2012-2014) allows the school to respond to the current challenges of accommodating new enrolments and providing the essential infrastructure for a leading international school. The School Board is currently working to address issues related to upgrading and replacing our buildings, and the consolidation and extension of existing programs for our students. The Strategic Plan sets out many of these goals, and the Board is continually responding to opportunities and challenges that come our way. The lead up to our 25 th Year Anniversary in 2014 will be a busy period for the school, and one where we will need the support of our parents and school community as we prepare our School for the next twenty five years. OUR FIRST GOLD DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD On Monday 17 th September in Honiara, the Solomons, Ashley Watson, one of our Year 11 students at the Senior College, was presented with both his Silver and Gold Duke’s Awards by Prince Harry. We have several Senior College students about to complete their Gold Duke’s Award but Ashley will be our first current student to be presented with a Gold Award. He has certainly achieved another first by having it presented by Prince William. Ashley completed his Bronze Award in Year 9 at The Essington School Darwin before spending last year (Year 10) in the Solomons. During this time he completed his Silver Award and Gold Awards. (Ashleigh’s Mum, Merrilyn Watson, is one of our current Music Teachers and a foundation Music Teacher at The Essington School Darwin). YEAR 10/11 LEARN TO FLY PROGRAM Our Year 10/11 students completed their Learn to Fly Program this week at the Batchelor Airstrip. This is the twelfth year our students have had the opportunity to complete this introductory Learn To Fly Program. Essington Early Childhood Forum-Helen Summers Helen Summers facilitated a very informative session on September 13

th

on ‘How to maximise your child’s learning’ with a special focus on Brain Gym. This was very well attended by both staff and parents. Thirty people attended this session in the New Library. Helen and her assistants demonstrated various Brain Gym activities including cross crawling, marching, heel-toe walking and similar exercises that develop, in young children, better control and coordination and promote better concentration skills. There are three imaginary mid lines in our bodies and many of these exercises are designed specifically to cross these mid lines to further promote learning in young children. She reiterated the importance of ‘rehydration’, as we enter the ‘wet’ season. Please ensure that your child brings along a water bottle that can remain in the classroom fridge to encourage children to rehydrate regularly during the day.

Our sincere thanks go to Helen Summers for facilitating this session last week. If you would like more information on this session please see me. Further more, if you have any

suggestions for a Term 4 Early Childhood Forum please let me know. Parent/Teacher Discussions Sincere thanks to all teachers for facilitating parent/teacher discussions this week. If, for unavoidable reasons you were unable to schedule a parent/teacher discussion, please see the classroom teacher to schedule a time that is mutually convenient before the end of the term.

Year 2A Hartley We are coming to the end of the Term and thoroughly enjoying our swimming program. We have had a great time racing our balloon powered cars and everyone has done a great job! Remember to start bringing all readers back for next term and searching for any lost library books. Cristina Hartley

Year 5A Burns Well done to all the students for their hard work and flexibility over the last couple of weeks. We all survived the intensive swimming program and thoroughly enjoyed the swimming carnival. Congratulations also to each of the students from our class who participated in the Tournament of Minds. It was great to see the commitment, dedication and positive team work you displayed. Well Done! All students have now completed their Olympic Project presentations and results have been handed back. I was extremely impressed by the effort students put into their Olympic Dioramas and the level of professionalism in conducting their speeches. With only a week to go of Term 3 we are very busy trying to finish up our theme related work on the Olympics, Ancient Greece and Greek Gods and Goddesses. Students created fantastic ancient pottery pieces this week with Miss Jones and really enjoyed getting creative. Thank you to those parents who came along to Parent Teacher Discussions on either Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. It was nice to see you and touch base again. Good luck for the last week before we can all enjoy a relaxing week off.

Ebony Burns Year 5B Materazzo Well it is the end of week 9! I can not believe how fast it has flown by. We had a fantastic time with swimming lessons and enjoyed starting each day with a swim at Nightcliff Pool. A great big well done to all the students that participated in our swimming carnival last Friday, we had a great time!

We are continuing our term theme on Ancient Greece and made Ancient Pots from brown paper which all tell their own story. Feel free to come up and have a look.

We have updated our display board outside our classroom with photos of the fantastic dioramas we made on different Olympic sports. All the students put in so much effort and I was very proud of them. Sara Materazzo

Year 6A Dumesny Only one week left! Year 6A have been working really hard in class on their assignments and group tasks. We are looking forward to our one week well-deserved holiday break. In English, we have been writing our refugee diary entries and we presented them to the class using expression and different voices. Some students used accents or attempted nervous voices and they were very entertaining! We have been learning about the Government in SOSE and despite the videos on the PEO websites not working, we had fun learning things on the quiz game. We have learned about the three levels of government, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Did you know the House of Representatives is the colour green to represent the colour in the British Parliament? We have been studying Ecology in Science. We are learning about the energy that is transferred in a Food Chain. We have learnt about producers, consumers, carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, insectivores, scavengers and decomposers. In Maths, we have been working in small groups to research different Olympic years, medal tallies and the countries’ population to work out which country has the most natural population of athletes. This has been challenging, but we have learnt how to express data in a table and create a graph using Excel. Miss Dumesny wishes all students a nice, relaxing and happy one week break. Neisha Dumesny and Urvija Sadadia Year 6B Dearden It has been a big week for us in 6B. For some of us as it is our annual Year 6 Canberra Trip next week. We have completed our SOSE government test and Science ecology test. We are also putting the final touches on our Olympic Averages assignment. Our class is preparing for another debate; we are going to see if our class bill will be able to be passed and made into a law! We were so impressed with the refugee diary presentations and there were a lot of engaging and confident speakers in this class! Well done to those students who practised and rehearsed at home. Just a reminder that spelling and Mental Math homework will continue until the end of the term using the Spellodrome and Mathletics website. Well done to those students who have consistently handed in work and completed their assignments. Reminders have been given out to students who still owe assignments and classroom activities for marking. Tutoring before and after school has also finished and will start up again during Week 1 of Term 4.

Year 6C Morvant Thanks to all the parents who attended Parent-Teacher interviews. It is a great way to touch base. As the year has passed us by so quickly, there have been a number of parents I have only spoken to via the phone or through email recently, so it is good to catch up face-to-face. One more week to go before the holidays! How this term has flown. We had a lovely day at the Year 4-6 Swimming Carnival last week and all of Year 6C is congratulated on their behavior and participation in events. There was a great spirit of sportsmanship and it was so good to see you all cheering each other on and encouraging your class and team mates. The Mathematics Olympics assignments were completed last week and some very interesting findings emerged. Teamwork skills are really improving and student confidence in presenting information to others has increased. We continue to read’ Little Brother’ and answer questions using the point/example/ explanation format. Students have displayed good comprehension skills using this style of response and we have had some very good discussions about the experiences Vithy is having on his journey. We will continue with the novel next term also. This week we have had a Science test which the students have prepared for with revision and by noting in their diaries to revise their Science books. We will also have a Government test for SOSE next week to conclude our unit on Civics. I would like to commend all students for the focus and commitment they have given to their learning experiences this term. There is a very good work ethic amongst the students and they have worked diligently to cover a lot of work. Keep up the great effort next term as you get closer to becoming Year 7 students! Please remember to bring a drink bottle and a hat to school each day.

Middle School Report In Middle School Art this year we have created a range of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks. Some Year 9 classes have made wire figures, with inspiration taken from Alberto Giacometti. Others have completed a drawing study in trees, created and designed their own tile mosaics and the year sevens completed their marionettes. Classes this semester are

investigating the theme of wearable artworks. They have viewed different artists for inspiration and gathered ideas.

The Essington School Darwin 4

Middle School The students have all worked through the design process, which is an important part of creating an art piece. Students have come up with some amazing textures and three-dimensional forms. All students are congratulated on their hard work in Middle School Art this year.

Megan Robertson Middle School Art Teacher The major focus for Year 7 this term has been ‘Poetry’. The students have been developing their understanding of Poetic Devices and the various forms of Poetry. It has been very exciting to observe the students gaining a greater appreciation of the Poetry genre. This unit is an effective ‘lead-up’ to our Term 4 Study of Shakespeare’s ‘ A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ . Throughout the term, students have analysed poems from both the technical perspective and their content, unwrapping the poet’s stories as they work their way through the sometimes complex and challenging writing. In addition, this unit of work has given the students an opportunity to demonstrate their speaking ability as they perform various poetry ‘recitals’. One of the most powerful activities occured when we moved from the lyrical ‘Ballads’ to a study of ‘Free Verse’ and, on completion of the discussion, students were asked to sit down and write a poem of their own, on any topic, in Free Verse style, (throwing all previously learned patterns of rhyming, rhythm and structure out of the ‘metaphorical window’). With pride, I present to you a collection of original poems by 7E. Ballad: My Dogs Teddy and Ralph My dogs Teddy and Ralph, Have been with me as long as I can think; Teddy is eight, she growls and howls Ralph is two he licks and licks. Together they play Together they bark Together they eat and drink And together they share a heart. If they were to leave, The house would be plain The yard would be quiet And I would be sad. Middle School Student Achievement and Involvement Casual Clothes Day Next Friday, the 28

th September, will be a Casual Clothes

day to celebrate the end of Term 3 and raise money to assist the Mountain Gorillas. With only seven hundred mountain gorillas remaining in the world, School Representative Council students identified The Gorilla Organisation (Formerly the Diana Fossey Fund) as a very worthy charity. Money raised will be dedicated towards protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitat from destruction in an area where poverty means people overuse the available land and hunt for bush meat in the National Parks where the gorillas live. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation. Year 4-6 Swimming Carnival Seven of our School Representative Council members and assistants organised and ran a BBQ at the Year 4-6 swimming carnival last week. Yasna Delo, Lucy Edwards, Anna Maurer, Jacob vanDam, Demi Tcha, Garrick Foy and Beau Simmons are BBQ experts and handled the preparation, cooking and cleaning up with ease. They sold hash browns, sausages, vegetable burgers, skewers and snow cones to the hoards of kids that descended on them during the break times. These students managed to raise a whopping $615.00 which will go towards the Gorilla Organisation. Fone Raiser During Term 2, School Representative Council ran a ‘Fone Raiser’ campaign, collecting old mobile phones which were not in use or broken. We shipped the phones off to a company who refurbish them and then distribute them to developing countries where there are few landlines. Consequently people rely on mobile handsets, which they often cannot afford. From this initiative the Council received $51.00, which they have donated to The Essington School Darwin Building Fund. With the addition of this week’s activities, our 2012 School Representative Council has raised $8547.00 for local, national and international charities this year. This is an outstanding achievement. Christmas Hamper Fundraiser School Representative Council students have started collecting non-perishable food items for their Christmas fundraiser. Students will be assembling food hampers from donations of food items (all food items will require a use by or best before date of February 2013). All hampers will be distributed to Darwin people in need over the Christmas period by Somerville Community Services. Donations can

Middle School/Senior College be left in Mrs Harvey’s office, the Middle School Office of the Front office. Student Profiles This week we introduce you to our hard working 6A School Representative Council representatives, Yasmin and Connor. Yasmin Simmons

Yasmin was the Cross Country Captain last year, has also been involved in the Port Power Australian Rules competition and represented The Essington School Darwin at the Rugby Gala Day. Outside of school, Yasmin plays Hockey for the Waratahs and is in the Junior Academy Squad for swimming. In her role on the Student

Representative Council, Yasmin would like to try to work out some more places for the Middle School students to sit and play during recess and lunch. Yasmin would love to keep on representing The Essington Darwin at as many Gala Days as she can. To help make the world a better place, Yasmin would like to get rid of litter and pollution throughout the world. Something that you may not know about Yasmin is that she once lived in Scotland for a short time. The things that Yasmin likes most about The Essington School Darwin are the friendly and helpful students and teachers. Connor Winter

Connor really enjoyed being a part of the Port Power Australian Rules Football Challenge that took place this year in Term 1. Connor also enjoys cricket, painting, chiseling and miniatures in his spare time. In his role on the Student Representative Council, Connor would love to develop his leadership skills to become a better leader.

To make the world a better place, Connor would like to try to decrease the amount of pollution and work out a way to make slums a thing of the past. Something that you may not know about Connor is that he has been to Europe three times and Canada twice. He also has relatives that live in Canada. The things that Connor likes the most about The Essington School Darwin is that the teachers follow through when someone breaks a rule, and that it is a very easy school to cope at because there is so much help for the students.
