• The Windows 8 operating system software runs the computer system overall.
• Windows 8 enables the system hardware to communicate with programs.
• Windows 8 comes in several different versions offering different features.

• Point. Drag mouse or finger on pad to place pointer over an onscreen object.
• Click. Point to onscreen object and press and release left mouse or touchpad button once.

• Right‐click. Point to onscreen object and press and release right mouse or touchpad button once.
• Drag. Point to onscreen object, press and hold left mouse while moving mouse, and then release mouse button.

Getting Around with a Touchscreen
• Swipe. Slide your finger quickly in the direction indicated, usually from the edge of the screen.
• Tap. Slide your finger quickly in the direction indicated, usually from the edge of the screen.
• Press and hold. Touch a button or on‐screen area with your finger and hold it down briefly.
• Slide. Move your finger on the screen in the direction indicated.
• Pinch or stretch. Moving two fingers together or apart on the screen generally changes the zoom.
• Rotate. Move two fingers on the screen in a clockwise or counter‐clockwise motion.

• To display Start screen from desktop:– Point to lower left corner and click Start screen thumbnail.– Point to lower right corner to open charms and then click Start charm.
– Press Windows logo key.
• To display desktop from Start screen:– Click Desktop tile.– Press Windows logo key.

Using Charms• Charms are hidden icons that appear along right side of screen.
• Charms appear when you:– Point mouse pointer to bottom right corner.

• Microsoft Account– Requires an email address and password– Connects you to cloud‐based services such as SkyDrive– Enables you to share your Windows settings across PCs– Default type of Windows 8 account
• Local Account– Exists only on the local PC– Does not require an email address– Password is optional– Similar to Windows 7 user accounts

• Standard privileges:– Can run applications and manage files– Can make user interface changes that affect only that account

Pausing or Finishing Your Work Session

Putting Your Computer to Sleep
• Putting a computer to sleep conserves power. This can be especially useful when running on battery power.
• To put a computer to sleep, select the Settings charm, click Power, and then click Sleep.
• To wake the computer back up, press the hardware power button.

Signing Out• Signing out shuts down all running apps.
• To sign out, from the Start screen, click your user name and then click Sign Out.

Locking the System
• Locking hides the desktop but does not sign out or conserve power
• If your user account is password‐protected, you must enter the password to unlock the system.
• To lock, from the Start screen, click your user name and then click Lock.
• To unlock, press the space bar and then type your password and press Enter.

Wrap Up• Windows 8 is a computer operating
system. • Navigate Windows 8 with a mouse or
touchpad, or with a touchscreen. • To access the sign-in screen, press the
space bar or swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
