Un-der Mining and Construction Business, the company manufactures and supplies Mining & Con-struction equipment like Bull Dozers, Excavators, Dumpers, Shovels, Loaders and Motor Graders to various user segments and under Rail & Metro Business, manufactures and supplies Rail Coaches, Metro Cars, AC EMUs, OHE Cars, Steel and Aluminum Wagons to the rail sector.

The company has a dedicated R&D infrastructure and team in line with consistent policy of the company to meet the technological demands through in-house R&D and strategic technical tie-ups with global players.

BEML's nationwide network of sales offices enables buyers with ready access to its wide range of products. Also, the full-fledged service centers and parts depots offer total equipment care, maintenance contracts and rehabilitation services.

The company has been registering consistent growth in sales and profits and has made a turnover of ` 3,558 Cr in 2009-10 registering a growth of 18% over the previous year with a Profit Before Tax of ` 320 Cr and has orders on hand of over ` 5,000 Cr as of end March 2010.

The Company has drawn up VISION – 2013 with an ambitious growth rate of 12% CAGR for crossing `5,000 Cr turnovers With this emerging prospects, BEML has plans to cross ` 5,000 Cr in the next 2 years and is poised to achieve ` 10,000 Cr mark by 2016-17 and the company is gearing up with necessary infrastructure for achieving the same.

Fulfillment of Social Obligation

 

a) Educational Facilities

Kendriya Vidyalaya of grade +2 level, a High School, a Primary School, two Nursery Schools and Junior College are provided to educate the employees children. Typewriting and shorthand institute, computer centers are run for the benefit of employees and employees children.

 

b) Welfare Measures

Apart from the above, Housing (Township) with 1500 Quarters for Officers and Employees, Co-operative Stores, Sports, Rehabilitation of widows, Welfare of physically handicapped, Welfare of SC/ST, full fledged Medical Centre with over 100 bed capacity hospital equipped with all modern facilities and a team of experienced Doctors and Para medical staff, Transportation facil-ities, Workers education scheme, Labour welfare fund schemes, Merit scholarship for employees children, etc., have been provided for the benefit of employees under Welfare Measures. Also a full fledged Sports Complex with a Stadium having a seating capacity of around 15000 to 20000 personnel and a well maintained Swimming Pool, Golf course, Lawn Tennis court, Shuttle Bad-minton hall, Billards, Carrom, Squash and a health club with modern equipments are the other facilities available for up keep of health and sports activities. Tournaments are held at regular in-tervals in almost all the sports activities separately for gents, ladies and children.

 

For recreation and for conducting cultural programmes there are two Auditoria, where films in different languages are screened weekly and film festivals are also organized occasionally. Kalakshetra & Open Air theatre for conducting cultural programmes and other functions are available. Also a full fledged EM-Club for Executives with a beautiful location surrounded with hills on one side and a green lawn & well maintained garden on the other side has facilities like a TV Hall, Reading Room/Library, Bar, a Guest House with fully furnished rooms.

 

c) Society Development

Also BEML plays a vital role in Rural development, BEML adopted village Dasorahosahalli sit-uated 2.5 Km from EM Division. Welfare of women, Welfare of youth, Blood donation, Na-tional savings, Fire protection and community medical care are the other activities carried out by KGF Complex towards society development and improvement.

Commitment to Quality

BEML Limited views Quality improvement as a business strategy and hence remains proactive in the areas of product and service quality. At BEML, a Corporate Quality Policy emphasizing Total Quality Management ensures that quality system adopted results in products, services and processes that meet stringent standards and requisite performance criteria. A separate Quality Department spearheads the thrust towards Total Quality Management.

All the manufacturing units of the company have been certified for ISO 9001-2008 Quality Man-agement System (QMS). The KGF Complex, Bangalore Complex and Mysore Complex are cer-tified for ISO 14001-2004 Environmental Management System (EMS). Also, the Bangalore Complex is certified for BS OHSAS 18001-2007 OHSAS Integrated Management system and Engine Division, Mysore complex is certified for AS9100B Aerospace certification.

The manufacturing divisions are augmented with test facilities available at its R&D / Technology Division. Laboratories at R&D, KGF and Mysore Complex are accredited to National Accredita-tion Board for Laboratories (NABL) covering Calibration of Flow, Pressure, Torque and Me-chanical Measuring Instruments. The facilities include custom made test tracks to evaluate the performance of equipment.

Well established vendor base is a key strength of BEML. Vendor assessment and development is a key component of the company's strategy for achieving Total Quality.

Quality Improvement initiatives required for both evolutionary and revolutionary improvements are in place. Concept of 5S, Kaizen and Quality Circles are practiced at grass root level. BEML is actively pursuing 'Six Sigma' methodologies to achieve break through in process / product im-provements. In 2006, it has launched company-wide 'Six Sigma' movement and the initiative has gained momentum with many on-going projects progressing well and completed projects are be-ing implemented successfully.

'Quality Function Deployment' is actively pursued in the organization. Cross-functional teams routinely visit customer sites to capture 'Voice of Customer'. Such actions have resulted in incor-porating a number of product improvements to fine tune product features on both in-house devel-oped as well as collaborated products to suit specific customer requirements and operating condi-tions.

BEML actively promotes small group activities to encourage and enhance 'Quality Culture' at all levels. The small group activity teams regularly participate in regional / national / international level competition and have achieved recognition as meritorious performers. It is our proud privi-lege to mention that our QC teams have raised the BEML flag high in the international arena by winning 'Gold Medal' in the ICQCC-2008 and 'Silver Medal' in the ICQCC-2009 competition. Quality Circle Team 'WHEEL' from EM Division, KGF Complex have been conferred with the Life Time Award as the 'LONGEST & ACTIVE QUALITY CIRCLE' by M/s. QCFI during 2010.

Company HistoryBharat Earth Movers Limited now known as BEML is an Indian Public Stock Undertaking, with headquarters in Bangalore. It manufactures a variety of heavy equipment, such as that used for earth moving, transport and mining.

BEML incorporated in May 1964, and commenced operations on 1 January 1965. It was wholly owned and operated by India's Ministry of Defense until 1992, when the government divested 25% of its holdings in the company. BEML is Asia's second-largest manufacturer of earth mov-ing equipment, and it controls 70% of India's market in that sector. Its stock trades on the Na-tional Stock Exchange Of India under the symbol "BEML", and on the Bombay Stock Exchange under the code "500048". The company went for Follow On Public offer (FPO) and fixed the price band for its FPO between Rs.1,020 and Rs.1,090.

BEML has manufacturing plants in Kolar Gold Fields, Bangalore and Mysore. It has numerous regional offices throughout the country. KGF unit is the main unit accounting for the manufac-ture and assembly of a wide array of earth-moving equipment such as Bulldozers and Excava-tors. Rail coaches are made in the Bangalore complex and the Mysore facility makes dump trucks and engines of various capacity .

BEML manufactures a wide range of products to meet the needs of Mining, Construction, Power, Irrigation, Fertilizer, Cement, Steel and Rail Sectors. The earthmoving equipment in-cludes Bulldozers, Dump Trucks, Hydraulic Excavators, Wheel Loaders, Rope Shovels, Walking Draglines, Motor Graders and Scrapers. BEML has recently introduced Road Headers and Slide Discharge Loaders for underground mining applications. Railway products include Integral Rail coaches, Electric Multiple Units, Rail Buses, Track Laying Equipment and Overhead Equipment Inspection Cars. BEML manufactures Heavy Duty Trucks and Trailers and hydraulic aggregates for transportation sector.

The company also manufactures high power diesel engines and heavy duty hydraulic aggregates to meet specific customer requirements. The company plans to diversify into varied activities in-cluding underground mining equipment, underground storage for petro-products, leasing and fi-nancial services and joint ventures abroad

Mining & Construction Business

BEML Limited offers a comprehensive and diverse range of mining machinery for both opencast and underground mines. BEML produces machines such as Electric Rope Shovels, Hydraulic Excavators, Bulldozers, Wheel Loaders, Wheel Dozers, Dump Trucks, Motor Graders, Pipe Lay-ers, Tyre Handlers, Water Sprinklers and Backhoe Loaders. Besides, BEML also manufactures mammoth Walking Draglines for cost-effective operations in the opencast mines. BEML has ventured into underground mining with products such as Side Discharge Loader, Load Haul Dumper, Winch, Winder, Granby Car, Skip etc. The boom in the mining industry has opened up new avenues for BEML in contract mining.

BEML has formed a joint venture company with its partners, Midwest Granite Limited and Pt. Sumber Mitra Jaya, Indonesia to take up contract mining within the country and overseas. The joint venture company is called BEML-Midwest Limited and the company will bid for coal and other mining contracts in India and abroad.

Rail & Metro Business

In recent years, BEML Limited has forayed into high-tech Metro Trains deployed for intra-city commuting. BEML is expanding its infrastructure to meet the greater needs of metro projects coming up in the country. Also, BEML supplies equipment to Indian Railways which include In-tegral Rail Coaches, Overhead Electric Inspection Cars, Postal Vans, AC/DC Electric Multiple Units, D-EMUs, Utility Track Vehicles, Track Laying Equipment, Broad-Gauge Railbus, Trea-sury Vans, Spoil Disposal Units etc.

De-fence Business

Being India’s leading defence equipment manufacturer, BEML Limited keeps the Indian Army and other defence forces abreast with state-of-the-art military equipment. The company manufac-ture variants of Tatra vehicle for all terrain operations including Bridge Layer, Field Artillery Tractor, Medium & Heavy Recovery Vehicle, Pontoon Mainstream Bridge Systems, Crash Fire Tenders, Mobile Mast Vehicle, etc. BEML also supplies Engineering Mine Ploughs, Tank Trans-portation Trailers, Weapon Loading equipment, Armoured Recovery Vehicle, Milrail Coaches and Wagons apart from Aircraft Weapon Loading Trolley and Aircraft Towing Tractor. BEML plays a stellar role in the country’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Project by supplying ground support vehicles. The company has also created a world class test track at its KGF Com-plex to test defence equipment and vehicles.

Aerospace Business

BEML Limited, in its drive towards continuing diversity, from its current product configurations of Mining & Construction, Rail & Metro and Defence Sectors, has forayed into Aerospace busi-ness. Taking advantage of the global and domestic opportunities available in the fast expanding aerospace market in India, and the “Off-Set” policy laid down for defence procurement by Gov-ernment of India, BEML launched its aerospace vertical in its technology division during the year 2007 to exploit the potential of the e-engineering services in the aerospace domain. Subse-quently, a new Aerospace Manufacturing Division was launched during Aero India 2009. Shri. Pradeep Kumar, then Secretary, Defence Production inaugurated the new aerospace manufactur-ing division on 12th February 2009.

The Aerospace Vertical of the Technology Division provides expert services like CAD/CAE & NPDs, offers high-quality customized engineering services & solutions, extensive experience and inherent strength in product design & development. Technology Division has certifications of CEMILAC, ISO 9001:2000 & NABL.

BEML is already supporting the aerospace operations by supplying Ground Support Equipment such as Aircraft Towing Tractor (ATT), Multi Purpose Weapon Loader (MPWL-Bheema) and Crash Fire Tender (CFT). The manufacturing division has scaled up its activities through manu-facture and supply of wide variety of Jigs, fixtures, Ground Support and Test Equipment. The other areas of concentration will be manufacture of gears and hydraulic aggregates to aeronauti-cal standards as BEML has core strength in these areas. To progress further, the activities are planned in a phased manner with additional infrastructure to manufacture sheet metal and CNC components leading to fabrication of sub-assemblies and major assemblies, Landing Gears of aircraft, manufacture of composites with the ultimate objective of building and testing fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, assembly of UAV from kits and upgrades of aircraft and helicopters. The Aerospace Manufacturing facility is established in Mysore Complex of BEML.

International Business Divi-sionLeader in India and Going Global

BEML Limited has an expanding international presence in more than 52 countries spread world-wide including Syria, Tunisia, UAE, Jordan, Suriname, South Africa, UK, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Philippines, Indonesia, Oman, Nepal etc. An Export House with ‘Star Exporter’ sta-tus, BEML has proven strengths in handling large-scale trading and counter-trade and has pushed the export of engineering goods as well as other equipment. Plans are in the offing to set up as-sembly operations at Morocco, Suriname and Indonesia in partnership with local players. Be-sides, BEML has an international office-cum-warehouse in Malaysia and an international pro-curement office in China. BEML has Dealers / Distributor operating from Syria, Tunisia, Sri

Lanka & UAE and representatives in Morocco and Suriname. With an effective system of Exten-sion Service Management, BEML has its marketing network in Middle East, Africa and Far East countries. BEML has secured repeat orders from countries like Syria and Tunisia for its products in view of their commendable performance.

A reliable product with comprehensive service packages attracts new buyers and retains existing customers. BEML strategically plans on Fleet Optimization Study (FOS), Recommended User’s Profitability (RUP) study and comprehensive after sales support services to achieve higher level of customer satisfaction. BEML also undertakes long term maintenance contracts like MARC, FMC with our esteemed customers.

Global Management of BEML

Company has opened its overseas offices in Malaysia and China for sourcing components and parts as well as for promoting its products in these markets. ‘BEML Brasil Industrial Ltda’ was set up in Brazil for sales of mining and construction equipment in Latin American countries with a phased local manufacturing program. The company opened its sales and service centre in In-donesia in August 2009.

Major Events YEAR EVENT 1964 - Incorporation of company as a private limited company with the registered office at Bangalore. BEML Limited has nationwide marketing network for sales and service of construction equip-ment spread across 22 States, the National Capital Region and 2 Union Territories.

Apart from the domestic market penetration, BEML’s machines reach over 52 countries world-wide covering Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. With the plans to in-crease global presence, BEML has set up overseas office and entering strategic alliances. Shoring up its revenues in the International Business is an immediate priority to BEML. It has established its international offices in China and warehouse at Malaysia. BEML has already es-tablished marketing base in Brazil, which will be followed by an assembly plant.

State-of-the-Art Test Facilities

R&D Centre at KGF was established in 1984, which is the biggest development centre in India. It is recognized by the Department of Science. This Centre is indeed a vital contribution towards strengthening the earthmover and related industries in the country. Comprehensive facilities in highly specialized areas are available at the Centre. Extensive computerisation has led to highly advanced technology development in various areas of activities in BEML R&D Division like CAD Centre, Fluid Power, Power-Line Testing and Structural Engineering.

Electronics Group

Today’s increased safety, operator comfort, less burden on environment and reduced operating expenditure are the driving forces of increasing use of electronics on mining & construction equipment. In order to promote use of electronics on BEML equipment to gain competitive edge a specialized electronics group has been established.

State-of-the-Art Test Facilities

I. Fluid Power Laboratory

Fluid Power plays an important role in the functioning of all earthmoving equipment. About 25% of the components that go into the assembly of earthmoving equipment comprise hy-draulic systems. The fluid power laboratory was totally planned and executed through in-house expertise with indigenous resources available in the country.

II. Power line Laboratory

Power line Laboratory was established by BEML at its R&D centre in KGF, in 1989. It has extensive facilities for evaluating transmissions, axles, torque converters and other gear drives.

III. Structural Engineering Laboratory

The structural engineering laboratory established in 1987 is equipped with state-of-the-art fa-cilities in fatigue testing, experimental stress analysis using strain gauge technique. The labo-ratory is involved in testing, evaluation and validation of structural components.

IV. Material Science Laboratory

The Material Science laboratory was set up in 1987 for testing and analysis of materials to aid chemical, mechanical and micro structure studies.

MANUFACTURING UNITS

KGF COMPLEX

Earth Moving Division (KGF Complex)

Earth Moving Division (EMD) at Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) is located about 100 Kms from Ban-galore. It is the biggest manufacturing plant of BEML and was established in 1964. It caters to Design & Development, Manufacturing, Testing and After-Sales-Service of Earth Moving Equipment and its aggregates. The Division is accredited with ISO 9001 - 2000 Certificate for QMS by BVCI. The Division is spread over 2980 acres of land well connected by roads and rail sidings enabling easy transport of heavy equipments & structures through special rake, trailers etc.

The Division manufactures Bull Dozers, Hydraulic Excavators, Wheel Dozers, Tyre Handlers, Pipe Layers, Rope Shovels and Walking Draglines for the Mining and Construction Industry; Heavy Duty TATRA Trucks, Heavy Recovery Vehicles (HRV), Armoured Recovery Vehicles (ARV) and other aggregates for the Defence Sector. Other products manufactured include Under Carriage Parts, Final Drives and Transmissions for Dumpers and Motor Graders and Disaster Management Equipment.

The Division is equipped with one of the best R&D Centres in Asia with modern infrastructural and testing facilities. Also, the Division has one of the biggest Machine Shops in Asia housing machine tools of different types and varieties with dedicated product lines, Gear Shop, Fabrica-tion Shops with latest welding facilities including Robotic, Plate Preparation Shop and an exclu-sive Heavy Equipment Shop to handle major fabrication of structures weighing 100 T.

Environmental Protection

BEML has been evincing keen interest in the afforestation programme in and around BEML fac-tory, township and surrounding areas. Due to concerted efforts of BEML Management, over two hundred thousand trees have come-up in and around KGF and the area is quite green. Norms laid down by the water and air pollution control board have been fully complied with. All the efflu-ents and discharges are released to the oxidation ponds and recycling arrangements have been carried out on regular basis.

Fulfillment of Social Obligation

Kendriya Vidyalaya of grade +2 level, a High School, a Primary School, two Nursery Schools and Junior College are provided to educate the employees children. Typewriting and shorthand institute, computer centers are run for the benefit of employees and employees children.

Apart from the above, Housing (Township) with 1500 Quarters for Officers and Employees, Co-operative Stores, Sports, Rehabilitation of widows, Welfare of physically handicapped, Welfare of SC/ST, full fledged Medical Centre with over 100 bed capacity hospital equipped with all

modern facilities and a team of experienced Doctors and Para medical staff, Transportation facil-ities, Workers education scheme, Labour welfare fund schemes, Merit scholarship for employees children, etc., have been provided for the benefit of employees under Welfare Measures. Also a full fledged Sports Complex with a Stadium having a seating capacity of around 15000 to 20000 personnel and a well maintained Swimming Pool, Golf course, Lawn Tennis court, Shuttle Bad-minton hall, Billards, Carrom, Squash and a health club with modern equipments are the other facilities available for up keep of health and sports activities. Tournaments are held at regular in-tervals in almost all the sports activities separately for gents, ladies and children.

For recreation and for conducting cultural programmes there are two Auditoria, where films in different languages are screened weekly and film festivals are also organized occasionally. Kalakshetra & Open Air theatre for conducting cultural programmes and other functions are available. Also a full fledged EM-Club for Executives with a beautiful location surrounded with hills on one side and a green lawn & well maintained garden on the other side has facilities like a TV Hall, Reading Room/Library, Bar, a Guest House with fully furnished rooms.

c) Society Development

Also BEML plays a vital role in Rural development, BEML adopted village Dasorahosahalli sit-uated 2.5 Km from EM Division. Welfare of women, Welfare of youth, Blood donation, Na-tional savings, Fire protection and community medical care are the other activities carried out by KGF Complex towards society development and improvement.

Hydraulics & Powerline (H&P) Division

Hydraulics & Powerline (H&P) Division was established in the year 1987 with an area covering 14.5 acres. This Division is distinctly separated from the Mother Plant (EM Division) consider-ing the classified nature of the products and located adjacent to R&D Division to manufacture Hydraulic Aggregates and Transmission Assemblies. The sapling of 1987 has grown now into an independent strategic business unit and a profit center. The restructuring of the division in all ar-eas spearheaded not only in manufacturing high quality Transmissions and Hydraulic Aggregates but also as a unit, which can rise to the occasion in indigenisation of high precision components and assemblies. Currently, the unit is poised to cater not only to captive requirements but also to external customers.

The Division is well equipped with highly sophisticated machines and backed by R&D Center and Technology Division with CAD / CAM and modern laboratories. The Division has highly skilled labour force working under well educated, experienced and committed supervisory per-sonnel who constitute the core competence and strength of the division.

During the year 2004, BEML Limited through a lease agreement with Bharat Gold Mines Lim-ited (BGML) had taken over the erstwhile Nundydroog workshop for the purpose of developing the same into a manufacturing unit to supplement the efforts of Bangalore complex. The premises consisted of Factory workshops and other buildings with a total area covering 22 acres.

BEML has engaged ex-BGML employees and their children with requisite qualifications and ex-perience for manufacture / fabrication of Railway components / sub-assemblies. In addition, the unit also supplemented the efforts for manufacture of structures for BOMN, BFAT & BRSTN wagons, to meet the defence requirements.

BEML has engaged the services of 3 sub-contractors, who have been allotted areas available for manufacture of components and sub-assemblies.

BEML constructed two new Hangers viz. Under Frame Hanger and Shell Hanger were dedicated to the nation on 9th October 2007. The shell hanger consists of 3 assembly lines. Two Traversers are available for transferring shells in between the assembly lines. The hangers are equipped with two numbers of each 10 T and 20 T EOT cranes. The initial capacity of hangers is to fabricate 80 Railcoach shells per annum.

BEML has plans to start a separate Bogie manufacturing facility as a Strategic Business Unit (SBU) to cater to both domestic and export markets.

Heavy Fabrication Unit (KGF Complex)

BEML has engaged the services of 4 sub-contractors, who have been allotted separate areas available for fabrication of structures.

The Unit has five hangers with four hangers for fabrication activities and one hanger for machin-ing activities. The fabrication hangers are equipped with required overhead cranes for material handling and sufficient welding machines.

Bangalore complex

BEML Limited (formerly known as Bharat Earth Movers Limited) as a full-fledged corporation was established in 1964 with Bangalore Complex as the mother unit. The Bangalore Complex (the then Rail Coach Factory) was in existence from 1947 as a part of Aircraft Factory (currently Hindustan Aeronautics Limited). Established in the year 1991 in Mysore, with technical know-how from Komatsu Japan, BEML diesel engines are built for maximum reliability, high performance and lasting value. These engines are backed by the facility of application engineering, multi location sales & ser-vice network and rehabilitation facility.

Engine Division manufactures heavy duty Diesel Engines for application on a wide variety of Earth Moving, Mining and Construction Machinery. Apart from these, the engines are also of-fered for other industrial applications as well as diesel generator sets. BEML Engines are used on Bull Dozers, Dump Trucks, Motor Graders, Wheel Loaders, Pipe Layers, Hydraulic Excavators, Loading Shovels, C Crane, Aircraft Towing Tractors, Backhoe Loaders, Water Sprinklers, Water Well Rigs and DG sets. Aerospace Manufacturing Division

The Aerospace Manufacturing Division(ASMD) of BEML was launched during February 2009 to foray into the aerospace domain as a diversification strategy to exploit the manufacturing op-portunities likely to be generated due to the defence offset policy of Govt. of India. The vision of the aerospace manufacturing unit is to become a prominent player in aerospace sector to support both domestic and global aerospace industry in defence and civil aircraft needs.

The ASMD is established at Mysore (150 Km from Bangalore), Karnataka. The Manufacturing unit is AS9100B accredited. The current manufacturing facilities supported by the NABL certi-fied test facilities are capable of manufacturing Ground Support Equipment, Ground Handling Equipment, jigs, fixtures, test rigs, etc., for aircraft building and maintenance. Additional manu-facturing facilities with ‘NADCAP’ approved heat treatment and processing facilities are being put up to enable the division to take up manufacture of air worthy components and aircraft struc-tural assemblies. The road map is to enter into the domain of Carbon Fibre Composite parts man-ufacturing (both primary and secondary), manufacture of gear box and its MRO, Hydraulic ag-gregates to support the aircraft industry. The company has acquired 1,00,000 sq. mtrs of land near Bengaluru International Airport in the Aero park SEZ for expanding its manufacturing ac-tivities.

Aircraft Towing Tractor (ATT):

Aircraft Towing Tractor is indigenously developed equipment having compact and low profile design which enables the machine move under the fuselage of wide body aircraft for push out and dock-in operations. It can also be adopted for towing heavy duty trailers. 3 variants of ATT are available to pull the aircraft weighing upto 300 tons. An ATT with inbuilt 40 KVA, GPU is specifically designed and developed for military applications.

Crash Fire Tender (CFT):

The Crash Fire Tender is used for extinguishing fire in the event of air-crash. The CFT is de-signed with special features required for emergency applications. Provision for auxiliary Fire Fighting Equipment

Slat Jig:

The jig used for assembly of the wing slat for SU 30 was manufactured at BEML. This jig is one of the complicated jigs of the SU 30 aircraft structure building. The jig has been successfully commissioned and proven at HAL, Nasik Division. The jig is 5200mm in length, 2000 mm in height and 1100mm in width. The Jig has 12 locators on top, 12 locators in bottom and 6 E-loca-tors. The manufacture of jigs involved conventional machining operations, CNC milling and ac-curate jig setting.

Gears:

BEML being a pioneer in manufacturing of transmission assemblies, final drive and hydraulic systems for earth moving equipments, has the core competence of gear manufacturing and preci-sion hydraulic assembly. The variety of machinery and skill sets available in this domain as paved way for BEML Aerospace manufacturing division to manufacture gears for helicopter re-quirements. Currently, Aerospace Manufacturing Division has taken up manufacture of gears for Advanced Light Helicopter, Cheetha and Chetak helicopters of HAL, India. A dedicated facility for aerospace gear box manufacturing is being set up and will be commissioned by year 2012.

Palakkad Complex

The green field project at Palakkad, Kerala has been set up with a planned outlay of Rs.260 crore and phase I of the project was put on stream on 16th May 2010 and the unit has already com-menced rolling out products. This unit, with 2 lakh sq feet manufacturing facilities, has been con-structed in record time of less than 6 months.

This Complex is planned mainly for Manufacturing Defence Products. Following products are planned to be manufactured in this Unit.

Vignyan Industries Limited

Vignyan Industries Limited (VIL) is a Subsidiary Unit of BEML Limited. This Unit is a Steel Casting Foundry, which has a combined licensed production capacity of 5000 T Components produced in the range between 2.0 kgs to 2250 kgs, which include all grades of Carbon Steel, Al-loy Steel and Manganese Steel. VIL specialises in churning out components for Earth Moving Machinery, Valves, Die Casting Machines, Ropeways, Automobiles and for Railways. Earlier VIL was a Captive Foundry to BEML alone and now it has extended its supplies to important customers like HMT, BHEL, KCPL, HML, Indian Railways and more importantly, VIL has di-versified its production into Ductile Iron Castings.
