Generating and Testing Hypotheses:McREL’s research supports the
following generalizations:4.Can be approached with either an inductive or deductive manner.5.Teachers should ask students clearly explain their hypotheses and conclusions.

Generating and Testing Hypotheses:McREL’s Recommendations:
3.Make sure that students can explain their hypotheses and conclusions.4.Use a variety to tasks to guide students through generating and testing their hypotheses.

Spreadsheet Software: Spreadsheets are used for making
informed predictions, collecting data, analyzing data for patterns, and revising hypotheses.◦ Teachers can create interactive spreadsheets
so students can manipulate it, this doesn’t waste class time for learning how to create spreadsheets.
Students can then turn their data into graphs to interpret and check hypotheses.

Data Collection Tools: Allows students to generate and test
hypotheses.◦ Allows students to identify similarities and
differences and create a nonlinguistic representation.
Allows students to see patterns which allows them to form a hypotheses, collect data then revise previous hypotheses.

Web Resources: Allow to test hypotheses by creating
virtual situations that would be impossible to do in real life.◦ Smog City (www.smogcity.com)◦ NASA SCIence Files Problem Board (
