Clotting = Positive feedback

1. A blood vessel Breaks 2. A Platelet plug forms

2. Serotonin is released and a vascular spam occurs, slowing blood to the area

3. Platelets also release Serotonin and other chemicals attracting other Platelets to the LOG Jam 3. Tissue secrete TF (Tissue

Factor) interacting with PF3 a coat on platelets and the “Clotting Cascade” is set off.

4. The “Clotting Cascade” = Prothrombin Thrombin + Fibrinogen = Fibrin + RBC’s forming a Clot.

The Plug is then replaced by the The Clot

Or as I like to call it “All hell breaks loose!”

Page 5: Chapter 11 lecture 2

So lets see that Simple: A Vessel Breaks

• Vascular spasm occurs: Serotonin released blood flow slowed

• TF+PF3 = Clotting Cascade

• Prothrombin Thrombin • Thrombin + Fibrinogen =

Fibrin + RBC = Clot • Hour later the Clot

squeezes and pulls the blood vessel together

• Platelet plug forms (Gives off Serotonin + other attracting chemicals for more Platelets)

• The Plug is replaced by “The Clot” (Fibrin + RBC’s)

Bleeding has Stopped

If this were a paper cut…

2 Kinds of Unwanted Clots

Thrombus: A blood clot in a unbroken blood vessel.

From the Greek thrombos meaning a lump or clump, or a curd or clot of milk.

Real Life: Snake bite (this is G Rated)

Nice Shorts! Probably why the snake bit you in the 1st place!!

Page 8: Chapter 11 lecture 2

2 Kinds of Unwanted Clots Embolus: Clot that travels through the bloodstream, lodges in a blood vessel and blocks it. Killing off surrounding tissue.

This a Stroke

There is also a Pulmonary

Embolism = Heart Attack

Page 9: Chapter 11 lecture 2

Ways of stopping the Bleeding • A Band Aid and kiss ?• Raise the area above the heart. If not then..• Put a gauze on it, if the blood soaks through don’t

sweat it put another on it. • Let it sit for 30 mins if it doesn’t stop its now

serious. • If its seriously deep and you got a few things you

can do.

Lets talk about those options shall we?Lets talk about those options shall we?

Page 10: Chapter 11 lecture 2

Control the Bleeding • Clotting Agents = QuickClot, HemCon and

Celox. (pick em up in catalog)• Tourniquet = Released every 10-15 mins

Not so bad you can useNot so bad you can use • Crazy Glue (seriously)• Butterfly tape (Till you get stitches)

Stitches/Sutures …Stitches/Sutures …YES!!! LETS LEARN ABOUT THAT!!!!YES!!! LETS LEARN ABOUT THAT!!!!
