    was divided between Prussia and Bavaria

    1870 France seized the region and started the Franco-

    Prussian War Once France lost, the Saar region became part of the

    German empire

    As a result of the Treaty of Versailles, the Saar regionwas isolated from the rest of Germany and France wasgiven control of its coal mines as compensation forWWI

    The Saar territory was placed under the administrationof the League of Nations for 15 years

    Administration of the Saar was entrusted to a

    Governing Commission consisting of five members:one representative of France, one native Germaninhabitant of the Saar, and three representatives ofcountries other than France and Germany

    On January 13, 1935, the inhabitants of the Saardetermined their sovereignty by plebiscite
