In the 5th century, it was conquered by the Franks andfor the next 1,300 years was part of the kingdoms of theFranks, the Carolingian Empire, and the Holy Roman

Empire 1815 Although dominated by a German population, it

was divided between Prussia and Bavaria

1870 France seized the region and started the Franco-

Prussian War Once France lost, the Saar region became part of the

German empire

Administration of the Saar was entrusted to a

Governing Commission consisting of five members:one representative of France, one native Germaninhabitant of the Saar, and three representatives ofcountries other than France and Germany

On January 13, 1935, the inhabitants of the Saardetermined their sovereignty by plebiscite
