Chapter 2 Revision
Possible Exam questions
• Describe what a search engine does• Searches the WWW using keywords and
returns the results• Identify how to limit the number of hits from a
search• Only use appropriate keywords• Make hits as useful as possible to the task• Use quotes and advanced search pages
Biometrics/Microchip
• Biometrics is a way of giving access to people, who prove who they are by scanning part of their body, usually a fingerprint or a retina.
• Fingertips and retinas are unique, so no one else will have the same pattern on their fingertips or retina as you.
• Using biometric scanning is a good way of making sure that unauthorised people cannot get access to things. It is also quick and easy to use, as well as being relatively accurate.
Cameras/Camcorders
• Digital (stills) camera• Digital camcorders
Students should know the difference between high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD).
Navigation Aids
• In-car sat navs• Specialist sat navs, e.g. for walkers and cyclistsAn in-car sat nav could be a separate unit, or
integrated into the dash.
Types of Biometrics• Face – Facial features and their position on the face are analysed.• Fingerprint – Probably the most commonly used body part used in
biometric scanning. The analysis of the pattern on an individual’s fingerprint.
• Hand Geometry – The shape of the hand and other features, such as the length of the fingers, is analysed
• Retina – The analysis of the capillary blood vessels located at the back of the eye
• Iris – The analysis of the coloured ring that surround the eye’s pupil• Vein – The pattern of the veins in a person’s hand or wrist is
analysed• Voice – The tone, pitch and frequency of someone’s voice is
analysed.
RFID Chips (Radio Frequency Identification)
• RFID chips are tiny microchips that can be inserted into items.
• They are set to replace bar codes, as the chips can be read from long distances.
• However, RFID chips may pose a threat to people’s privacy for this reason.
• RFID chips aren’t always on. They only respond when the chip reader asks for a response from the chip.

Conserve Power when using a PC• Do not Play multimedia• Reduce the screen brightness• Change the power options and allow the
computer to turn off when it is inactive• Copy CD/DVDs to the hard drive and play them
from there as this uses less power than when using the optical Drive
• Turn off the Wifi and Bluetooth when not in use• Disconnect devices which are not being used• Use earphones as opposed to the speakers
Camera features
• Resolution- quality of photos• Close up and wide angle shots• Storage capacity
NetBooks
• What makes a netbook suitable for a traveller?
Netbook Features
Robust Lightweight Solid state drives – no moving parts Long battery life Wi-Fi enabled Can easily fit into a bag out of sight of
potential thieves
Summary
Useful for everyone Especially useful for travellers
Microphone Lightweight
Speakers Robust
Keyboard Long battery life
USB ports WiFi enabledClear bright screen Solid state hard drive without
disks
What makes a netbook suitable for use in classrooms?
• Quick to start up• Does not take up much space on the desk• Can easily fit in a school bag• Inexpensive• Wi-Fi enabled• Can stay logged on all day
CyberCafes
• How do you stay safe in a cybercafe?
Answers• Never store passwords• delete all temporary files after use• delete any stored passwords after use; delete all cookies• delete anything copied to the computer from an SD card or
memory stick• check that you have logged out from email or messenger
software• make sure email software is set to ‘do not remember
password’• do not access bank accounts, etc. as there may be spyware on
the computer.
LOL!
How to transfer photos?
• How would you transfer photos you have taken on your camera or mobile phone?
Mobile phones + Cameras
• All mobile phones can use Bluetooth, but most basic digital cameras do not, while most digital cameras are provided with a USB lead, but not all mobile phones have a USB port.
• All mobile phones and digital cameras use flash memory cards, such as SD cards.
• Using Bluetooth would be the most difficult and the slowest method, with a maximum transfer rate of 1 Mbs.
Mobile phones + Cameras
• USB can achieve 480 Mbs, while memory cards have a transfer rate of 15–45 MBs. (Note: the first two are in megabits, while the memory card is megabytes.)
• Using a memory card would be the quickest for transferring images.
• When travelling, a USB cable would take up space or could be lost. Taking the memory card out of the camera and placing it in the netbook would be the simplest and fastest method.
Online Photo Albums
Answers
• They are free.• Users can create different albums for different
people (they may have images they want to show their friends but do not want their parents to see!)
• Users can add a description and friends can add their comments
Cloud computing

• Google Docs
Cloud computing
• Programs and data is stored centrally• All documents are stored online• You need an internet connection• No need to buy expensive software or
powerful computers with a large hard drive
What are the advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing?
Answers
Advantages Disadvantages
No need to buy/upgrade software
No need for large storage devices
Can access documents anywhere
Can work on documents with others
No need for USB memory stick
Internet may be inaccessible
Slower to load documents
Someone else has your documents
The firm may close down
Easier for data to be stolen
Web Apps
• Web application• Any application that can be accessed using a web
browser• It can be as simple as a message board or a
spreadsheet• http://simplespark.com/• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jB5KFJULahs• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuRpva5-

GPS- different to tracking!
• Gives directions based on information received from satellites
• Uses a satnav
• Tracking- used in your exam question to track van drivers
Metadata
• Provides information about the content of a digital item
• Each digital image has a file attached to it which says date, time etc….
Geotag
• Attaches the exact geographical co-ordinates of longitude and latitude to a digital image giving the location of where it was taken
• 515553,192260
To find out where the images were taken
• Copy and paste the co-ordinates in to Google Maps or Google Earth to get the exact location a photo was taken
GPS Tracking
• Business use this to improve efficiency• You need a GPS system and modem• Uses the mobile phone network to tell the
firm where the Van is
• http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/gps-background/6409.html
Advantages/ Disadvantages
It could help to re-route the vans if there are traffic problems. It could re-route the vans to pick up a new delivery as it
knows where each one is all the time. It can check how often a van is parked such as at lunch time. It can check the speed of the van.
They will feel that they are not trusted and are being spied on by the company.
May make them drive faster and so break the law or become unsafe.
May increase the stress levels of the workers.
May ask about children being tracked!
Geo Caching
• Game to locate an item• Uses GPS and co-ordinates attached to an
item
Convergence
• One devices carrying out many other tasks• Best example mobile phones!• We watched the Click clip about this!• http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/
