enslaved and forced in labor encomiendas– Suffered harsh treatment– Tried to convert them
De Soto Explores Florida
1539 de Soto’s conquistadors massacred Indians, burned fields, emptied storehouses, and burned villages.

The French establish fur trade Early 1500’s, French explorers were
looking for a Northwest passage (water route to Asia through the cold waters of present-day Canada)
