Chapter 3 – 5 Metamorphic Rock
How metamorphic rocks form
With enough heat and pressure, any rock can become metamorphic!
Rocks that get pushed deep under the Earth’s surface can change into different
minerals.
This pressure along with high temperatures, cause rock grains to
line up in flat parallel layers or bands.
Metamorphic rocks that have layered grains are said to be foliated.
Slate is a foliated rock.
Quartzite is a nonfoliated metamorphic rock.
Uses of metamorphic rock include marble for sculpting and building and slate for
roofing, flooring, blackboards, pool tables and walkways.
