The number one core value is EQUAL AND FREE ACCESS

TO INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE.

Global Top Five also includes other important values such

as:

• Commitment to dissemination of information and

knowledge

• Protection of cultural heritage and memory

• Commitment to community engagement and

empowerment

• Dedication to learning

Free and open access to everyone

regardless of race, colour, religion,

gender, gender expression, age,

national origin, disability, marital status,

or sexual orientation was the most

common response.

EQUAL AND FREE ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE is shared value

across all library types. It is the top value for all library types except national

libraries where Protection of cultural heritage and memory has been voted

slightly higher. Academic, research and school libraries gave more votes for

Dedication to learning, while public and special libraries focus more on

community engagement.

EQUAL AND FREE ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND

KNOWLEDGE is the value number one across all generations

of librarians.

Librarians with greater experience (i.e. those with greater

number of years worked in libraries) assign greater value to

Professionalism and ethical conduct comparing to librarians

with less library experience.

Libraries are free, open, neutral, and

inclusive meeting points which support free

opinion building, democracy, digitalizing,

literacy and access to literature and

information.

shared value number one across all regions. Commitment to

dissemination of information and knowledge is another value

with high alignment between regions.

Commitment to community engagement and empowerment is

voted higher than an average in all regions except Europe.

All the above are core values of all libraries.

All libraries must strive to achieve them.

types. Community engagement is the top response for

public libraries. Support learning, literacy and reading is
