A. Extending Civil Rights

1. Civil Rights - rights guaranteed to all

U.S. Citizens.

2. Thirteenth Amendment - outlawed

slavery.

3. Fourteenth amendment, ratified in

1868, was intended to protect the

rights of African Americans.

B. Extending Voting Rights

1. Suffrage - the right to vote.

a. Was originally left to the states.

2. Fifteenth Amendment gave African

Americans the right to vote.

3. Seventeenth amendment allowed

voters in a state to choose the state’s

Senators. (Were chosen by state

legislatures.)

4. Nineteenth Amendment gave women

the right to vote. (1920)

a. Wyoming was the first state to give

women the right to vote in 1869.

5. Twenty-third amendment, ratified in

1961, gave residents of D.C. the right

to vote.

6. Twenty-fourth Amendment forbade

poll taxes. (1966)

a. Poll tax - tax charged on people in

order to vote.

7. Twenty-sixth Amendment lowered the

voting age to 18. (1971)
