- System allows fertilization to take place
- Nourishes and protects the developing child until birth

Fallopian Tube
Egg travels from fallopian tube to uterus

Uterus
Fertilized egg becomes implanted. The pear shaped organ where child developes

Endometrium
Lining of the uterus

Cervix
• Opening at the bottom of the Uterus

Vagina
• Muscular passageway leading from the uterus to the outside of the body
![Page 9: Chapter 7 Lesson 4 The Female Reproductive System](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062313/56649f4c5503460f94c6c8e6/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Menstruation
• Once puberty begins, the ovaries star to release a single mature egg (ovulation)
• At same time lining of the uterus thickens
• If fertilization – egg implants
• If no fertilization – egg shed along with thickened lining (menstruation)
• Happens about every 28 days – last 5-7 days

Fertilization
• Sperm entering the vagina travel to the fallopian tubes
• Fertilization takes place I the fallopian tube when male sperm cell and female cell unite
• Egg then moves from fallopian tube to uterus and implants
