Study and practice the following grammatical patterns and usage.
A. Commands expressed by the imperative
1. The second person imperative:
Wait! Stop! Don’t hurry! Don’t give up!
Eat your dinner, boys. Be quiet, Tom.
Do hurry. Do be quiet.
2. The first person imperative:
Let us (Let’s) stand together in this emergency.
Let us not be alarmed by rumors.
3. The third person imperative:
Let them go by train.
Let him/her do his/her job.
B. Other ways of expressing commands
1. Subject + shall for the third person command:
The chairman, Secretary, and Treasure shall be elected annually.
2. Subject + will, mainly for the third person commands:
When the alarm rings passengers and crew will assemble at their boat
stations.
3. Commands are often expressed as obligations by must:
You must not smoke in the petrol store.
Passengers must cross the line by the footbridge.
4. Instructions or orders can be conveyed by the be + infinitive construction:
You are to report for duty immediately.
5. Prohibitions may be expressed in written instructions by may not:
Candidates may not bring textbooks into the examination room.
C. Requests with can/could/may/might I/we
“Can I have a sweet?” said the little boy. (can is the most informal)
Could I have two tickets, please? (the most generally useful)
May/Might I have a copy of the letter?
D. Request with could/will/would you etc.

Will you please count you change? (will is more authoritative)
Would you please count your change? (would you = could you)
Would you mind + gerund: Would you mind moving your car?
Would you like to …?: Would you like to take a seat = Please take a set.
E. Advice forms
1. must, ought to, should can be used for advice:
You must read this book. It’s marvelous.
You ought to plant some trees.
You should grow your own vegetables.
2. had better + bare infinitive:
You would better take off your wet shoes.
You would better not wait any longer.
He’d better stop taking these pills.
3. if I were you I should/would:
If I were you I would buy a car.
4. I advise you/would advise you + infinitive:
I (would) advise you to apply at once.
I (‘d) advise applying at once.
5. why don’t you …? (can be either advice or suggestion):
Why don’t you learn to play your guitar?
Why don’t you take a holiday?
6. it is time you + past tense:
It is time you bought a new coat.
F. Suggestions
1. First person suggestions with let’s or shall I/we:
let’s + infinitive: Let’s paint it ourselves.
shall I/we + infinitive: Shall we invite Bill?
2. First and second person suggestions:
why don’t we/you + infinitive: Why don’t we meet and discuss it?
why not + infinitive: Why not meet and discuss it?
what’s wrong with/what’s the matter with + noun:

suppose I/we/you + present or past tense:
Suppose you offer/offered to pay him?
First, second, or third person suggestions with suggest or purpose:
suggest (+ possessive adjective) + gerund: I suggest (your) selling it.
suggest that + subject + present tense: We suggest that you should sell
it. (formal)
3. Suggestions in indirect speech:
suggest/suggested (+ possessive adjective) + gerund:
Tom suggests/suggested (our) having a meeting.
suggest that + subject + present: Ann suggests that he should sell his
house.
suggest that + subject + past tense: Ann suggested that he sold it.
suggest (any tense) + noun/pronoun: Mr. Smith suggested a meeting.
