52 CHAPTER II SIDDHA SYSTEM Siddha system is known to be one of the most ancient systems of medicine in India which was spiritually enriched by the Siddhars. 1 “Siddha Medicine or ‘Siddham’ 2 is not purely a medical system for curing the physical body, it is a way of life formulated by Siddhars through their vision and realization for getting peace for the mind, health for the physical body and purity for the soul. Siddhars through their great powers like Attmasiddhikal and through immense prayers realized the fact that soul which is ultimately a part of the Supreme is like a drop of water from sea”. “Ever since the Human life existed on the Earth, they lived with other living being, such as plants and creatures side by side. Siddha sys tem is known to be one of the most ancient

They formula ted the medic ines f rom the herbs thousands

of years ago which a re s t i l l used in the same way wi thout

any expi ry in the i r medic ina l va lue . 3

composed of f ive bas ic pr imordia l e lements namely ear th ,

w a t e r , f i r e , a i r a n d s p a c e . T h e h u m a n b o d y i s a

c o n g l o m e r a t i o n o f t h r e e h u m o r s a n d s e v e n p h y s i c a l

components . The Food i s cons idered to be a bas ic bu i ld ing

mater ia l of human body, which gets processed in to humors ,

t i s s u e s a n d w a s t e s . T h e e q u i l li b r i u m o f h u m o ur s , b o d y

overcooked food , i l l cooked food , unhygien ic food , over

f r ied food and very l igh t f r i ed foods should be avo ided

f o r p e o p l e o f a l l a g e g r o u p s . A p e r s o n w h o w i s h e s t o

reduce weight should a lways dr ink a g lass of water before

f o o d t o p r e v e n t o v e r e a t i n g e v e n i f h e o r s h e i s v e r y

Siddha and Bronchia l Asthma

The s iddha herba l p lan t Perugi la i or Siru thekku i s a

usefu l “A Siddha Herba l remedy for Diar rhoea , Rheumat ic

c o m p l a i n t s , F e v e r and S k i n a i l m e n t s . ” I t b e l o n g e d t o

C l e r o d e n d r u m i n f o r t u n a t u m F a m i l y . I t s a c t i o n s are

An t i -d i a r rhoea l , Hepa to -p ro t ec t i ve , An t i - Rheuma t i c and

Ant i -Microbia l . The roo ts and bark of s tem of th i s p lan t

extracted from its 50 species. In 1952 reserpene alkaloid was

e x t r a c t e d . O t h e r c o m m o n a l k a l o i d s a r e s e r p e n t i n e ,

rauvolscine, descrpidene and ajmeline. This is mainly used

for the adjustment of blood pressure and in snake bit ing. 23

Licorice is a drug is obtained from the roots of the plant

G l y c y r r h i z a g l a b r a , t h e f a m i l y L e g u m i n o s e a e . I t i s a

perennia l herb tha t g rows wi ld in Southern Europe , and

Western and Central Asia. The roots are dried in sheds and

a r e s h i p p e d i n c y l i n d r i c a l p i e c e s . L i c o r i c e i s u s e d i n

medicine as a demulcent and expectorant and to disguise the

taste of nauseous preparations.

Colchium is another drug obtained from the dried corms

a n d r o o t s o f t h e p l a n t C o l c h i u m a u t u m n a l e t h e f a m i l y

Lil iaceae. This is used as a medicine in the t reatment of

r h e u m a t i s m a n d g o u t . I t i s a l s o u s e d a s a n e x t e r n a l

application to lesson swelling and pains. Colchicine is used

in modern genetics to produce doubling of chromosomes.

obtained from its fruit are very hard and bit ter and contain

strychnine and bucine alkaloids. This drug is used as a tonic

and stimulant and also used in treatment of nervous disorders

and paralysis. This drug is also a powerful poison, so always

it should used in smal l doses and by the consu l ta t ion o f

physician.

Psyll ium or Isapghul drug is the seed of several species

of family Plantaginaceae. They are also grown in India. These

seeds contains a tasteless mucilaginous substance which acts

as a laxative. These are used in gastro-intestinal troubles,

dysentery and dyspepsia.

C a s t e r o i l i s o b t a i n e d f r o m t h e s e e d s o f R i c i n u s

communis of the family Euophorbiaceae. This is a wild plant

that is grown al l over India . This i s a lso used as a good

Black Pepper belonged to the family of Piperaceae. The

carminat ive and aromatic are used for digest ive purposes.
